The Mike O'Meara Show is a nationally syndicated radio talk show featuring Mike O'Meara, Buzz Burbank, and Robb Spewak. It succeeded the Don and Mike Show after Don Geronimo retired on April 11, 2008. Most stations which syndicated the previous show, continued to air The Mike O'Meara Show via the CBS-owned Westwood One Radio Network. The show's flagship station is 106.7 WJFK in Washington, D.C. [1]
The show was named "Best Afternoon Drive Radio Show" in the 2008 Best of Northern Virginia list in Northern Virginia Magazine[2].
Personalities
The show is hosted by Mike O'Meara. News briefs and commentary (more frequently than on the previous show) are provided by Buzz Burbank. Early in the show's run three-time former producer Robb Spewak filled in for former Don and Mike producer Beth Ann McBride until her arrival. Phone calls continue to be screened by Joe Ardinger (sometimes referred to as "World's Oldest Phone Screener"), who also occasionally contributes to the show and broadcasts his own show on Saturday nights on WJFK-FM. "Joe Radio".
Robb Spewak
Robb Spewak, born The Don and Mike Show, having served as an intern, writer, and producer previously. Spewak, also known as "Robbay" served three times as the producer of the Don and Mike Show and was the last person to serve in that position. Earlier in life, Spewak lettered in Theatre Arts in high school, and found workplace fulfillment as a checker at Safeway. In 2008 Spewak was the victim of a botched vasectomy, which rendered him sterile. Spewak is married (Cary) and has two children (Julia and Robert III).[3]
March 8, 1971 , was the "third man" onBuzz Burbank
Buzz Burbank, whose real name is Michael J. Elston, was born October 7 1953[citation needed]. He is originally from Wichita, KS where his father and stepmother Phyllis live. He is a graduate of Wichita State University, where he majored in English, class of 1975.[4] Burbank's career began at KLEO in Wichita in the 1972. He has also worked in New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, Minneapolis and New Orleans, hosting talk and entertainment shows. He was morning Drive News Anchor at CBS Radio/ WBBM-FM Chicago, and for Bonneville Chicago Radio Group. He served as News Director at Fairbanks/WZZD Philadelphia. He is married to his lovely wife Marsha, and they own cats. He began with Don and Mike on December 2 1991. Buzz has spoken frankly on the show about one incident of swinging at Hedonism in Jamaica. Buzz is not comfortable around children in strollers, and the other cast members often make joking references to his supposed fondness for the chronic. Seemingly on a long leash in his long term relationship, Buzz is the de facto "sex machine" of the show. On the serious side, Buzz did two daylong shifts of healing community radio on the Saturday and Sunday immediately following 9/11 on WJFK-FM. He also holds the role of "wrangler" for the "Buzz Babes", spokesmodels for the Mike O'Meara show.
Beth Ann McBride
Executive Producer Beth Ann McBride was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Winston-Salem, and is a graduate of UNC Greensboro with a degree in communications. She started her radio career at FM radio station WRQK, now 98.7 Simon. She has also worked at WKZL-FM and at WSJS, where she was a producer and assistant continuity director in 2002-03. She also has worked at radio stations in Charlotte; the U.S. Virgin Islands; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Erie, Pa.[5] She was originally a producer of The Don and Mike Show, but left because she felt the cost of living in the DC area versus her salary was a dealbreaker. After the Don and Mike Show, she relocated to the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, where she was Program Director for CBS' WSJS and WSML, in Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point [6], as well as host of her own afternoon drive show, "The Ride With McBride". Beth Ann has characterized her radio career in the Carolina days as "failure". After leaving her PD position in the Triangle, Beth Ann, whose persona on the show is a workaholic, held a series of jobs including beauty parlor receptionist and traveling carpet salesperson before joining the Mike O'Meara Show. She is the single mother of one daughter, whom she once jokingly called "Isis", claiming it was Egyptian for "stupid girl". Beth Ann is the doting owner of a dog, Bunny, and has said on the air that she likes to use a mirror during her alone time.
Katie
Katie runs the dump button for the show, and appears on air via a "daily thought" which usually ends in "I hate you" as well as impromptu appearances in studio. Katie loves tomatoes and feels toward them like a mother lion feels toward her cubs. Her mortal enemy is Pam, a freeloading housemate. It's not clear whether Pam actually exists outside of Katie's mind, but the others on the show act as if she does. Katie grew two inches when she was 26 years old, and is now 5' 1" tall. In August 2008 Katie had her beer confiscated on BYOB Friday after she made a (dumped) joke about peanut butter.
