Ronald M. Shapiro (born March 29, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a well-known sports agent, attorney, author, expert negotiator, educator, speaker, and civic leader.

Biography

Shapiro graduated from Haverford College in 1964 with a B.A.[1] and cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1967.[2] From 1972 to 1974 he served as Maryland State Securities Commissioner. In 1972 Shapiro founded what is now known as Shapiro Sher Guinot & Sandler[2], a prominent Baltimore Law Firm. Subsequently, in 1976 Mr. Shapiro founded Shapiro, Robinson & Associates[3], a sports management firm. In 1995 he founded Shapiro Negotiations Institute,[4] a premier global provider of training and consulting that has trained over 350,000 professionals in the areas of Negotiation, Influencing, Sales Optimization, and Conflict Resolution He is also the Special Advisor to the owner of the Baltimore Ravens.[5]

USA Today called Ron Shapiro "one of baseball’s most respected agent-attorneys," and The Sporting News named him one of the "100 most powerful people in sports." His impressive list of clients includes more Hall of Famers than any other agent,[6] including Cal Ripken, Jr.[7], Jim Palmer[8], Brooks Robinson[9], Kirby Puckett[10], and Eddie Murray.[11] Shapiro’s current clients include, among others, 2006 American League Batting Champion and Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer[12]; Cleveland Indians pitcher Jake Westbrook[13]; Detroit Tigers 1st Baseman Sean Casey[14]; Cleveland Indians outfielder Trot Nixon[15]; and Seattle Mariners outfielder Raúl Ibáñez.[16]

In October 1998, Shapiro’s book, The Power Of Nice: How To Negotiate So Everyone Wins- Especially you! was published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The book was excerpted in Fortune Magazine and named one of the "Top Ten 'On the Job' Business Books of the Year" by the Library Journal[17]. Shapiro’s second book, Bullies, Tyrants & Impossible people: How To Beat Them Without Joining Them, was released by Crown Books (Random House) in June 2005 and made The Wall Street Journal’s Best Seller List in its first week of publication.[18] His current book, Dare To Prepare: How To Win Before You Begin, was published by Crown Business in January 2008.[4] and was an instant New York Times Best Seller.

Shapiro Negotiations Institute

Ron Shapiro co-founded the Shapiro Negotiations Institute (SNI) in 1995 with his partner, Mark A. Jankowski. SNI is a premier global provider of training and consulting in the areas of Negotiation, Influencing, Sales Optimization, and Conflict Resolution. Shapiro and his team of experts have delivered their system to over 350,000 professionals and have worked with leading public and private organizations throughout the world such as: ADP, Allegis Grop, Bank of America, Best Buy, Black and Decker, Citigroup, Comcast, ConvaTec, Ecolab, Export-Import Bank, Feld Entertainment, GE, Gen Re (a Berkshire Hathaway Company), JPMorgan Chase & Co., Johnson & Johnson, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ryland Homes, San Antonio Spurs, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Stop & Shop, UPS, USDA, and Verizon.

Family

Mr. Shapiro comes from what some are heralding as the “First Family of Sports Management.” His seven children include, Mark Shapiro, the General Manager and Vice President of the Cleveland Indians, and, Julie Mangini, who is married to Eric Mangini, Head Coach of the New York Jets[19].
