Deja Entendu is the second album from Long Island based band Brand New, released in 2003. Vastly different from their first release, Your Favorite Weapon, Deja Entendu was positively received by critics for the meaningful songs and lyrics. Déjà Entendu is French for 'already heard' (much like the term 'déjà vu' meaning 'already seen') and is a commentary on modern rock. Two singles were released from the album: "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades".

The lyrics in this album are notably more mature than their previous record, portraying an enhanced feeling of fear, paranoia, and angst. Such examples include the rigors of endless touring ("I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light"), Lacey's struggle with his grandfather's lung cancer ("Guernica"), the emotional and psychological tolls of sex ("Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades"), and Lacey's dread that popularity will become his own demise like soccer star Diego Maradona and rock star Elvis Presley (Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis)[1]. Also notable is the concept of a dual storyline that exists in "Good to Know That if I Ever Need Attention All I Have to Do Is Die", where one story line reflects a writer's life and the other is the story he writes.

During the final 20 seconds of the album, on the track "Play Crack the Sky", Lacey can be heard muttering "Never to see any other way" before leaving the room. This phrase is in reference to the final track "A Day in the Life" on The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album.

There is a little-known 12th song from this album entitled: "Flying at Tree Level Version 1.0". The song was recorded during the Deja Entendu session, but didn't make it onto the album, instead appearing later on the Beer: The Movie compilation soundtrack.

The entire album was leaked, mostly unmixed, several months before release without song titles, and including the 12th track "Flying at Tree Level v1.0". Although most tracks are similar to the final release, the track "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades" has organ during the verses, which the final version doesn't.

This album ranked at #75 for Top 100 Albums of 2003 by Rate Your Music.[2]

The album was certified Gold on May 29th 2007, nearly 4 years after its original release.[3]

The song "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades" was featured on the Xbox versions of the video games Tiger Woods PGA Tour and NHL 2004. The song "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" was featured on the Playstation 2 versions of NHL 2004 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004.

Trivia

  • The song title "Okay I Believe You, but My Tommy Gun Don't" comes from a line in the film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York when the main character Kevin McCallister is watching a fake film entitled Angels With Filthy Souls 2.
  • The song title "Tautou" comes from the actress Audrey Tautou, who starred in one of Jesse's favorite movies, Amelie
  • The Latin phrase (and approximate translation) "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades"--the title of a song on the album--is the same phrase Max Fischer offers his teacher Miss Cross as evidence of his mastery of Latin in the movie Rushmore[4]
  • The demo for "Jaws Theme Swimming" can be found on the "Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades" Single.
  • The demo for "Good to Know That If I Ever Need Attention All I Have to Do Is Die" can be found on "The Holiday EP"
  • "Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis" is a reference to former soccer star Diego Maradona and singer Elvis Presley. Both were extremely popular in their respective fields but they wasted all of their talents by becoming addicted to drugs. In this song, Jesse expresses his desire to not become like them by using a metaphor of taking advantage of a drunk girl. Like taking advantage of the drunk girl, Jesse claims that burning out is just as easy.[original research?]
