Edward E. "Ted" Kaufman (born March 15, 1939) is the intended replacement for U.S. Vice President-elect Joe Biden's seat in the United States Senate, representing Delaware. Kaufman is a member of the advisory board of the Obama-Biden Transition Project and Co-Chair of Vice President-elect Biden's transition team.[1]

Kaufman earned a BS in mechanical engineering from Duke University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. For 22 years, from 1973 to 1995, he was on Biden's Senate staff, with the last 19 years as Chief of Staff. Kaufman also worked on Biden's campaigns. Independently, he worked as a senior lecturing fellow at Duke University School of Law, beginning in 1991, and in a private consulting firm. In 1995, he was appointed by President Clinton to the Broadcasting Board of Governors, where he currently serves his fourth term.[2]

On November 24, 2008, Governor Ruth Ann Minner of Delaware announced at a press conference her intention to pick Kaufman to replace Joe Biden in the United States Senate for Delaware.[3] He will be sworn in early to mid January after Biden resigns to become Vice President of the United States.[4] Kaufman, who was 69 years old at the time of the announcement,[3] stated his intention to not run for election at the end of his term and will be replaced in a special election in 2010.[5]

Kaufman has denied press speculation that he is serving as a "placeholder" for Joe Biden's son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, who is currently serving with the National Guard in Iraq. Joe Biden stated after the announcement of Kaufman's appointment, "It is no secret that I believe my son, Attorney General Beau Biden, would make a great United States Senator just as I believe he has been a great attorney general. But Beau has made it clear from the moment he entered public life that any office he sought he would earn on his own."[1]
