Rajdeep Sardesai (born 24 May 1965) is an Indian journalist, political commentator and news presenter.

Biography

Rajdeep Sardesai was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to a Goan (Saraswat) father and a Maharashtrian mother. He is the son of former Indian Test cricketer Dilip Sardesai and Nandini Sardesai, an activist in Mumbai and former head of the Dept of Sociology at St Xavier's College.

He attended the Cathedral and John Connon School and Campion School in Mumbai and completed bachelor's course in Economics from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. He then studied at University College, Oxford, taking the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Bachelor of Civil Law.[1] Rajdeep won the 2007 Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian Journalism.

He hosted the popular Television debate show 'The Big Fight'. Prior to setting up GBN, he was the Managing Editor of both NDTV 24X7 and NDTV India and was responsible for overseeing the news policy for both the channels.

He moved to television journalism in 1994 as Political Editor, New Delhi Television (NDTV.) He was particularly recognised for his coverage of the Gujarat riots. Rajdeep Sardesai later quit NDTV to start his own company, Global Broadcast News (GBN) in collaboration with the American giant CNN and Raghav Bahl's TV18. The latter broadcasts the Indian Edition of CNBC called CNBC-TV18, the Hindi consumer channel, CNBC Awaaz and an international channel, SAW. The new channel with Rajdeep as the Editor-in-Chief has been named CNN-IBN. It went on air on December 17, 2005. Channel 7 has also come under this umbrella after Rajdeep's company bought a 46 percent stake in the channel. Channel 7 has since been renamed IBN-7.

It is widely believed by many people that programs presented by Rajdeep and his channel CNN-IBN are Biased in favour of the Indian National Congress.[original research?]

Rajdeep is a member of the Population Council and the Press Club of India. He writes columns for leading English dailies.
