Indy
Appearance
Indy can refer to:
- People, places, and things from, or associated with, the city of Indianapolis, Indiana or its surrounding metropolitan area.
- Indy (gene), found in Drosophila melanogaster, which makes the fly live twice as long. Here, 'INDY' stands for "I'm not dead yet!"
- Indy (software), a music discovery system using collaborative filtering conceived by Ian Clarke.
- Indy grab, a skateboarding trick.
- The SGI Indy workstation from SGI.
- Internet Direct for Borland Delphi and FreePascal.
Indy is a registered trademark of Brickyard Trademarks, Inc., the licensing arm of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation.
Indy is also commonly used, and some feel misused, as a nickname or abbreviation:
- It is a proper nickname for the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, the surrounding metropolitan area, and people/places/things associated with that geographic region. It often appears in lieu of the word "Indianapolis" in phrases and names, such as "Indy 500", or "Indy cars" (a short name for the vehicles that race at the circuits of the Indy Racing League). It should be noted that Indy is never an appropriate nickname for the state of Indiana or things related to that state in its entirety.
- The nickname for the Indy Racing League & V8 Supercar Racing festival at Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
- The nickname for the fictional character Indiana Jones.
- The nickname of an incoherent deluded character from Clanplay.
- Indy, a Serbian turbo-folk singer.
- It is also a sometimes used spelling (that some feel inappropriate) for an abbreviation of the word "independent"; as is the more common "indie". The following usages are considered by some to be colloquial, and possibly improper:
- As a nickname for Independence High School, located in San Jose, California, USA.
- "Indy Media" is a nickname for the Independent Media Center.
- "The Indy" is a nickname for the British newspaper The Independent and a Providence-based college newspaper The College Hill Independent.
