The All-Russian State University of Cinematography named after S. A. Gerasimov (Russian: Всероссийский государственный университет кинематографии имени С.А.Герасимова), VGIK, is a film school in Moscow. It was founded by the film director Vladimir Gardin in 1919 and is, according to the institute, the oldest film school in the world.[1] During Soviet times the film school was known as All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (Russian: Всесоюзный государственный институт кинематографии). Famous film directors such as Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Aleksey Batalov were among its distinguished faculty. Notable alumni include Andrei Tarkovsky, Sergei Parajanov, Sergei Bondarchuk and Alexander Sokurov. The film school is named after the film director and actor Sergei Gerasimov since 1986. In 2008 the institute became a university.
