Júlio Correia da Silva, best known as Julinho (born 1 December 1919 in Ramalde - Porto) was a former football player who used to play as a Striker. He is notable for being one of the SL Benfica legends.


Club Career

Julinho started is career at Boavista FC (1934-1940) and also represented Académico do Porto (1940-1942) but he achieved great notoriety at the Lisbon club , SL Benfica (1942-1953) where he won the Portuguese Liga three times, and one Taça Latina. Benfica paid 25 contos (125 euros) a lot of money back then to buy the player from Académica do Porto.

At SL Benfica he was crowned the Top Scorer of the Portuguese Liga two times. And he is linked with the club history, for scoring the Golden Goal in the 1949/1950 edition of Taça Latina, after two injury times (149 minute).

He was one of the five "Diabos Vermelhos" - ("Red Devils") , name given by the supporters of SL Benfica given to five player; Julinho, Mário Rui, Arsénio, Espírito Santo and Rogério "Pipi".

Julinho was part of the early glory of SL Benfica, he is in most of the greatest goalscoring results of the Reds:

(Sanjoanense 1 - 13 SL Benfica ; he scored 6 goals)

(FC Porto 2 - 12 SL Benfica; Julinho socred 4 goals)

(Sporting 2- 7 SL Benfica; Julinho didn´t score)

(This was one of the legendary results for the reds since back then "Os Cinco Violinos" where Sporting players.)

National Team

He was capped only one time for the Portugal National Football Team , but the international games wheren´t usual back then. His International game was against Spain (21 March of 1948)in Madrid (Spain 2 - Portugal 0).
