Southern Miss ranks among the elite in the conference with respect to baseball[1]. The team has been to 7 NCAA Tournaments. The team has managed to produce 16 All-Americans and numerous other all conference players. Southern Miss has had several players in the draft and currently has 4 players on Major League Rosters. The baseball team had the distinction of opening their career with a bang. In 1912 the first year of fielding a baseball team, the team's first game was against the Detroit Tigers. Despite the national media attention and facing their heroes of the day, Southern Miss was able to score 2 runs but still fell 24-2.
