[[:Image:Sg1stargatefront.jpg|thumb|right|250px|thumb|The most important piece of technology in the Stargate universe: the Stargate itself.]] In the fictional universe of Stargate, a number of technologically advanced races and societies have produced a variety of highly advanced weapons, tools, and spacecraft. By liaising with these races and learning from them, Earth too has begun to create its own futuristic technology. All such technology is SCI-classified top secret, and is used solely by the SGC and its SG teams, or in Atlantis.

In the Stargate fictional universe, the humans of Earth have developed many advanced technologies based on what SG teams have brought back from trips to other planets through the Stargate. Earth has also benefitted from technical knowledge provided by friendly alien races, such as the Asgard and the Tok'ra.

The Goa'uld are the main adversaries for most of the run of Stargate SG-1. They scavenged or conquered most of their advanced technologies from other races. However, there are innovators amongst the Goa'uld; Anubis and Ba'al in particular have been depicted with a great deal of technological ingenuity. Many Goa'uld devices, such as the staff weapon, are designed to be more showy than practical, meant to intimidate and reinforce their position as gods to their followers.[1] Some pieces of Goa'uld technology, such as the hand device and the healing device, respond only to mental commands and require naqahdah in the bloodstream of the user to operate.[2][3]

The Ancients (also known as "Alterans" and "Lanteans") are an advanced race discovered by the SGC, and were the precursor to modern-day humans. Among their many achievements, their most notable creation is the entire Stargate network. Ancient science and technology, with a few exceptions, is generally far superior to that of other races. They were extremely advanced in the areas of healing, power generation, and biology. They also designed a number of weapons, primarily for use in their centuries-long war with the Wraith in the Pegasus Galaxy. Ori technology is similar to that of the Ancients, as they are ascended themselves. All known Ancient technology was created prior to ascension, with the exception of the Velona weapon, assisted by Orlin, and the weapon created by Merlin to destroy ascended beings. However, not all the artifacts they built were a complete success.

The humans of Earth (known as the Tau'ri to the Goa'uld and Jaffa, and the Atlanteans to the Wraith) have developed many futuristic technologies throughout the course of Stargate SG-1 and its spin-offs. One of the primary missions of the Stargate Program is the acquisition of technologies capable of defending Earth and improving the lives of its inhabitants. Most useful alien technologies brought back by SG teams through the Stargate are studied at the SGC or at Area 51, and reverse-engineered when possible. Earth has also benefitted immensely from collaborations and gifts from its various offworld allies, such as the Asgard and the Tok'ra. Since the discovery of Atlantis in the Pegasus galaxy, Earth has gained a significant understanding of Ancient technology.

The Ancients (originally called the "Alterans", known as "Lanteans" in the Pegasus galaxy) are the most advanced civilization in the Stargate fictional universe. Among their many technological achievements is the Stargate network itself, central to the franchise, and the City Ship of Atlantis, the setting of Stargate Atlantis. Ancient inventions and machines play critical roles in many Stargate stories, including "The Fifth Race", "Redemption", "Lost City", "Reckoning", and Stargate: The Ark of Truth.

Asgard technology

The Asgard are an extremely advanced race who become allies of Earth, and provide many of their technologies to the SGC. They were once contemporaries of the Ancients, and learned much from them.[4] The Asgard are no longer capable of traditional reproduction and instead perpetuate themselves through cloning, as they have the technology to upload and store Asgard consciousnesses and transfer them to new bodies.[5][4] Neutronium is a key element of Asgard technology.[4] Prominent Asgard technologies include:

  • Beaming technology Teleportation system that allows people and objects to be moved nearly instantly across long distances,[2] capable of handling objects as large as an entire skyscraper.[6] The Asgard have shared beaming technology with Earth, and it is installed on Earth battlecruisers.[7][8] The technology also falls into the hands of the Goa'uld after Anubis probes Thor's mind.[5][9] Beaming requires a sensor lock on the subject;[10] members of SG teams are equipped with locator beacons,[7] and later locator chip implants, to facilitate emergency beam-out.[11] The Wraith have developed countermeasures to prevent beaming aboard their ships.[8] Beaming is not possible through shields.[5][12] With a slight modification, Asgard beams can convert matter into desired forms such as air and food.[13]
  • Thor's Hammer Device installed on Cimmera to protect it against the Goa'uld. It scans incoming travelers through the Stargate and beams those harboring a symbiote into a prison, which allows humans to leave but not Goa'uld. SG-1 disables the Hammer to rescue Teal'c, and later Thor provides a new Hammer to Cimmeria.[14][2]

Ori technology

The Ori are Ascended beings who serve as the main antagonists in seasons 9 and 10 of Stargate SG-1, posing a major threat because of their advanced technology. As they were once the same race as the Ancients, Ori and Ancient technologies are comparable and have many similarities. The Ori Supergate is compatible with a normal Milky Way Stargate,[15] and the Ori possess ring transporters cosmetically different but functionally identical to Ancient equivalents.[16] They also have their own version of the Ancient control chair on their motherships.[17] Prominent Ori technologies include:

  • Prior plague A biological weapon released by the Priors, used to coerce populations into accepting Origin as the Priors can also cure it using their powers. The disease is similar to the plague that decimated the Ancients millennia ago, suggesting a relationship.[18] The plague is highly virulent and eventually leads to major organ failure. First seen used against primitive planets,[18] the Priors eventually deploy it against Earth, where it rapidly spreads beyond the SGC. The epidemic is cured with assistance from the Ancient Orlin, the Sodan, and the Jaffa Gerak (who had been transformed into a Prior), though not before thousands of lives are lost.[19]
  • "Supergate" A gigantic Stargate designed to allow the passage of starships. The Goa'uld word for this device is "Chappa'ko".[20] The Supergate is made up of 90 smaller pieces that are moved through a regular Stargate. Once assembled, a nearby planet is collapsed into a quantum singularity to provide the massive power needed to open a wormhole to the Ori galaxy. Samantha Carter theorizes that the singularity allows a connection to be maintained indefinitely. Each segment of the Supergate is nearly indestructible;[21][20] Stargate Command eventually develops a plan to destroy the Supergate by beaming Mark-IX nuclear warheads between the segments and detonating them during gate activation.[22]. The first Ori attempt to create Supergate in the Milky Way fails when Vala Mal Doran inserts her Tel'tak into the incomplete ring and prevents the segments from completely connecting.[21] The second Supergate forms successfully and allows a fleet of Ori motherships into the Milky Way.[20] The SGC seals the Supergate to the Ori by opening a connection from the Pegasus galaxy to a regular Stargate near the Supergate, and then "jumping" the wormhole to the Supergate with a large nuclear explosion.[15] The Supergate is reopened in order to send the Sangraal to the Ori galaxy,[23] and is used by the Odyssey to travel to the Ori galaxy.[22] The special effects for the Supergate are not always consistent regarding its size in different episodes.

Tok'ra technology

The Tok'ra are an offshoot of the Goa'uld and thus have access to many of their technologies, such as force-fields, memory devices and transphase eradication rods. Tok'ra forces rely on zat'n'ktels, as they lack the naqahdah necessary to build staff weapons. The Tok'ra often assist the SGC in developing new technologies, and they have provided many pieces of their technology to Stargate Command when required. Tok'ra one-way force-fields are installed in the SGC's isolation rooms.[24] Prominent Tok'ra technologies include:

  • Crystal tunnel Used by the Tok'ra to quickly build new bases, these tunnels grow underground automatically from a small seed crystal into predetermined configurations, manufacturing oxygen in the process to create a livable environment. They can also be collapsed rapidly should the Tok'ra need to evacuate.[25] They are used to facilitate a Langaran drilling machine on a mission to stop the underground spread of naqahdriah.[26]
  • Re'ol chemical A memory-altering substance derived from the natural secretions of the Re'ol species, which allows a subject to fool another into trusting them. It is used by Daniel Jackson to infiltrate a summit of the System Lords,[27] and by Cameron Mitchell to infiltrate the Lucian Alliance[28]
  • Symbiote poison An aerosol toxin deadly to Goa'uld symbiotes, that is highly potent even in minute quantities. It is originally developed to assassinate the System Lords, but is instead used to wipe out Anubis' army on Revanna.[27][29] The Trust later gains access to the poison and uses it to attack Goa'uld worlds in "Endgame", killing millions of Jaffa in the process.
  • Tretonin A drug extracted from Goa'uld symbiotes, introduced in Template:Sgcite as the creation of the Pangaran civilization, using the spawn of the Tok'ra Queen Egeria. The drug reproduces the symbiote's healing powers, allowing perfect health and extended life, while also suppressing the user's natural immune system as the symbiote does.[30] The Tok'ra eventually develop a synthetic version of tretonin, which is first tested on the Jaffa in Template:Sgcite and eventually becomes widespread amongst the Jaffa, freeing them from their dependence on the Goa'uld. Tretonin is ineffective in a small number of Jaffa.[31]
  • Za'tarc detector A device invented by Anise, meant to work in conjunction with a memory device to search for false memories that would indicate that a person has been brainwashed into a za'tarc assassin. It works by comparing the subject's conscious and subconscious mind. However, it can give a false positive if the subject is subconsciously concealing something else, such as in the case of Jack O'Neill and his attraction to Samantha Carter.[32][33]

Wraith technology

The Wraith are the main antagonists of Stargate Atlantis. Although not as advanced as their enemies, Ancients, the Wraith were able to drive them out of the Pegasus galaxy by virtue of superior numbers,[34] made possible by cloning technology powered by stolen ZPMs.[35] The Wraith have been shown to be tactically and technologically adaptable,[36][37][38] being able to quickly develop a countermeasure to Asgard beaming technology,[8] and creating highly sophisticated computer viruses for use against the Daedalus[39] and the Asurans.[40] The Wraith also operate an extensive network of transmitters and relay devices throughout Pegasus that allow them to respond rapidly to events of interest.[41][42] Many pieces of Wraith technology, including their ships, are a hybrid of organic and mechanical parts with the ability to heal damage.[43] Prominent Wraith technologies include:

  • Stunner Handheld weapons designed to incapacitate human prey for future feeding, and thus cause no significant physical damage.[34][41] Three sizes of stunners have been shown: a small pistol,[8] a medium truncheon,[44] and a large rifle with a bayonet-type spike.[34] Some humans are more resistant to stunner blasts than others,[45] and humans under the influence of Wraith feeding enzyme are immune to it.[8] The Atlantis Expedition has accumulated a cache of stunners from their encounters with the Wraith.[46]
  • Subspace tracker An organic device that transmits a tracking signal through subspace, allowing targets to be tracked from many light-years away. Runners have these surgically implanted into their spinal columns, preventing easy removal and enabling the Wraith to easily keep track of them.[47]
  • Intergalactic Communication Device Constructed by a Wraith on Earth in a parallel universe. Used electricity from the main power grid of the US to send a message to other Wraith about the location of Earth. When activated, it also generates an enomrous EM field that can cause blackouts miles away. Due to the immense power, the device also opened a small rift in the space-time continum, carrying the message to other realities.[48]

Other technology

  • Mimic device Small devices used by aliens to impersonate SGC personnel in an invasion of Earth.[49] After the aliens are defeated, the devices are sent to Area 51 for study. They are stolen by the NID and used to frame Jack O'Neill for an assassination attempt on Senator Kinsey.[50]
  • Quantum mirror A portal made from naqahdah, found on P3R-233, that allows access to parallel universes. Daniel Jackson's experience with the mirror gives Earth advance warning of Apophis' attack.[51] Afterwards, the mirror is stored at Area 51. It is used by alternate versions of Samantha Carter and Charles Kawalsky to flee from Goa'uld domination in their universe.[52]. The mirror is later destroyed.[53]
  • Traveler pistol (Ronon's gun) Weapon carried by Ronon Dex, first seen in Template:Sgcite. It has two settings that are indicated by color on the weapon: red for stun and white for kill.[54] The origin of the weapon was unknown until the episode Template:Sgcite, when the Travelers are seen carrying the same type of weapons.

Fictional materials and elements

  • Hoffan drug A drug made by the Hoffans, which prevents the individual from being fed on by the Wraith and kills any Wraith who attempts to do so. It first appears in "Poisoning the Well", where the Atlantis Expedition is made aware of the drug. They quickly discover that the drug's positive benefits come with a 50% chance of death in the subject. The Hoffans distributed it among their population anyway, and the Wraith exterminated them as a result. The drug is later discovered and refined by Michael, reducing the fatality rate to 30%, and distributed to several random planets in Pegasus. To that end, in "Outsiders", it is revealed the Wraith are destroying any civilization associated the drug before they can feed "indiscriminately" again.
  • Maclarium An artificially-synthesized super-heavy element with an atomic weight of over 200, named after its fictional creator, Dr. MacLaren. Originally named HU-2340, in the episode Template:Sgcite SG-1 attempts to introduce it into the sun of the planet K'Tau, hoping to neutralize foreign plutonium atoms and thus stop a reaction that would eventually render K'Tau uninhabitable.

  • Naqahdah (/ˈnækwɨdə/, also spelled "naquahdah", "naquadah" or "naquaada") A rare, superheavy metal first depicted (but not named) as a quartzite-like "mineral" in the original Stargate movie. Its most basic use is as a weapon: naqahdah greatly amplifies energy, making it extremely potent if paired with explosives.[55] Due to its unique properties, naqahdah forms the basis for many advanced technologies; the Stargates themselves are composed almost entirely of naqahdah. Naqahdah is also present in the bloodstream of the Goa'uld, which allows them to control their technology and sense the presence of other symbiotes. The Goa'uld have naqahdah mining operations on many planets; its refined form, weapons-grade naqahdah, is extremely valuable and often used as currency.[56] Weapons-grade naqahdah is so dense that two Jaffa are required to lift a quantity the size of a couple of common housing bricks, making it at least as dense as gold.[57] Alternate forms of naqahdah include liquid naqahdah, used to power Goa'uld staff weapons,[58] and heavy liquid naqahdah, used to power Goa'uld AG-3 weapons satellites.[59] Naqahdah does not occur naturally in the Solar System.[60]
  • Naqahdriah (also spelled "naquahdriah" or "naquadria") A highly unstable variant isotope of naqahdah with considerably greater energy-production capacity — and correspondingly greater explosive potential.[61] Naqahdriah emits radiation that can cause death,[62] or in non-lethal doses brain damage, resulting in delusions and/or schizophrenia.[63] The energy released by naqahdriah can catalyze nearby naqahdah into more naqahdriah in a self-sustaining reaction.[26] Naqahdriah occurs naturally only in the nation of Kelowna on the planet Langara, where it is used to construct weapons of mass destruction for a cold war against two rival nations. The Kelownan Jonas Quinn brings naqahdria to Stargate Command in protest of his government's weapons program.[61] Naqahdria allows the Earth X-302 fighter to be fitted with a far smaller hyperdrive than would otherwise be possible, although its instability limits the drive's utility to short, unguided jumps.[64] The Earth ship Prometheus also initially uses naqahdriah in its hyperdrive, though the element's instability causes problems on its first flight.[65] The Earth Mark IX "Gatebuster" nuclear bomb is enhanced with naqahdriah and is designed to detonate the naqahdah in a Stargate to create a massive explosion.[21]
  • Neutronium A super-dense element key to Asgard technology and in the construction of human-form Replicators.[4] The Asgard time dilation device on Halla is protected by a shell of solid neutronium.[66] The new Asgard homeworld, Orilla, is rich in neutronium, which leads it to be targeted by the Replicators.[4] The nanite Asurans are also based on neutronium, and the abundant deposits of neutronium in the crust of their homeworld proves to be the final key to their defeat in Template:Sgcite. Earth has obtained supplies of neutronium, code-named "pre-assembled masonry panels", for its own nanite experiments.[67]

Eye

Powerful artifact shaped like a circular crystal. There are six Eyes in all, held by Ra, Apophis, Osiris, Tiamat, and others. Each eye is powerful individually, but combined their power increases tenfold, creating a weapon of mass destruction.[70] The first Eye shown onscreen is the Eye of Tiamat, which is buried inside the Goa'uld Marduk's ziggurat.[71] Anubis eventually collects five of the six Eyes and receives the Eye of Ra from SG-1 in exchange for sparing Abydos. Once he has the superweapon, Anubis defeats the combined fleet of the System Lords and then breaks the agreement and destroys Abydos.[70] The weapon is later destroyed by a F-302 flown by Jack O'Neill and Samantha Carter.[72]

Healing device

A circular device worn over the palm that can heal most diseases and injuries. It requires naqahdah in the blood of the user to operate.[14] Nirrti uses a healing device in conjunction with another instrument to return Cassandra's physiology to normal in Template:Sgcite. Jacob Carter unsuccessfully attempts to use a healing device to heal Daniel Jackson from naqahdriah radiation poisoning in Template:Sgcite. Vala Mal Doran is proficient with the healing device and uses one to assist the SGC.[18][73]

Long-range communications device

Featureless metallic sphere enabling communication over many light-years. When in use, the face of the other person ripples onto its surface. Introduced as a large sphere floating within an inactive Stargate,[74] it has since appeared as a smaller, hand-held version.[25] The Tok'ra do not use them because the system is not secure.[25] Harry Maybourne obtains one with which to communicate with his rogue NID teams off-world.[75] Jack O'Neill has variously called them "Goa'uld TV",[76] "teleball dealies",[25] and "Goa'uld communication balls".[75]

Mask

In the original movie, Ra wears a complex mask resembling an Egyptian pharaoh's death mask (also seen in Template:Sgcite), and his guards wear animal-headed masks evoking the Egyptian gods Anubis and Horus. The masks are made from many metallic plates that can be retracted into the collar, and serve to reinforce the perception that they are gods to Ra's slaves.[55] In Stargate SG-1, Apophis and his Serpent Guards wear masks,[77] as do Heru-ur and his Horus Guards.[2] Some of Sokar's Jaffa wear demon-headed masks,[78] and reference is made to a Setesh Guard in Template:Sgcite. The masks contain an internal HUD,[79] and its eyes glow while the wearer is alive.[77]

Memory device

Disk-shaped device that stimulates and amplifies the memory centers of the brain, aiding in recall. It is applied to the temple, causing a moment of pain, and can be connected to a visual display to allow a person's memories to be viewed directly.[80] The Goa'uld use memory devices for interrogation;[80][81] Osiris uses one to gain access to Daniel Jackson's dreams.[9] Jacob Carter uses a memory device on a Kull Warrior to learn its origin.[82] A memory device is part of the Tok'ra za'tarc detector.[32]

Nish'ta

Artificial organism in the form of a green gas, that once absorbed into a body's tissues opens the subject to mind control. Apophis uses it to turn Rya'c against his father Teal'c,[83] and Seth uses it to brainwash humans into loyal cultists.[3] Nish'ta can only be killed by an electrical shock, such as from a zat gun,[83] but once it has been eradicated a person cannot be reinfected.[3] The breath of Hathor is a less potent version of nish'ta.[84][3]

Sarcophagus

Coffin-like chamber capable of vastly extending life, healing almost any illness, repairing grievous injuries, and even reviving the recently dead.[55] However, frequent use of the sarcophagus becomes addictive and has a deleterious effect on the mind;[85] This is a main factor in why the Goa'uld are evil, and why the Tok'ra refuse to use the sarcophagus.[25] Sarcophagi are sometimes used to preserve individuals for thousands of years,[84][71] although there is a limit to how long a sarcophagus can extend a person's life.[72] The first sarcophagus was created by the Goa'uld Telchak, using a less potent version of the energy emitted by an Ancient healing device.[82]

Transphase eradication rod (TER)

A device designed to illuminate the Reetou, enemies of the Goa'uld who are normally invisible because they exist 180 degrees out of phase. The TER also incorporates an energy weapon that can kill a Reetou in one shot. The Tok'ra provide TERs to Stargate Command after it is infiltrated by Reetou rebels.[86] Thereafter, the SGC maintains a cache of TERs.[87] A TER is also capable of penetrating a Goa'uld personal cloaking device, as they are based on Reetou phase-shifting.[88] The prototype of the Kull disruptor is based on a modified TER.[89]

Anti-Prior device

A device invented by Samantha Carter and Bill Lee, it is a black disk containing a device that produces high-frequency sound when activated. Developed after the Khalek encounter,[90] the device, when set to the proper frequency, can stop a Prior of the Ori from using his powers for a limited time.

The exact amount of time this takes is not entirely clear, as is if an immunity of some kind is built up over the short term afterwards once a Prior or other evolved human is able to overcome the device. A prior captured in The Fourth Horseman managed to overcome the device after a matter of hours, as did Daniel Jackson. Adria, the Orici over a time period of a day or more was exposed to the device, then a Goa'uld knockoff of the device which unlike the Earth device used some kind of EM energy to achieve the same effect.

Anti-Wraith Retrovirus

Though developed exclusively in Atlantis, this "virus" is actually a gene therapy developed by Dr. Carson Beckett that suppresses the Wraith, or Iratus bug, part of the Wraith genome, and leaves only the human genes active.[91] It causes a Wraith to slowly become a human. Once the process is complete, the subject usually experiences memory loss, allowing him or her to then be fooled into thinking that they have always been human. This was what was done to Michael in the episode Template:Sgcite.[92]

The invention of this process served as the catalyst for the exploration of a new theme in Stargate Atlantis, which began to explore the idea that maybe the Wraith are not any more "evil" than humans who breed and cull other animals to survive, as well as exploring the concept of identity. The Wraith Michael, though converted into a human genetically, was nevertheless still a Wraith (or so a select number of Atlantis personnel attested vigorously).

The retrovirus does not always have to be injected. It can be transmitted through the air, and used to potentially infect an entire Wraith hive ship. In effect, it is an aerosol weaponised Biological Weapon. Unless given regular injections of the gene, a subject's Iratus Bug DNA will start to exert itself again. The retrovirus does not turn a female wraith, but will incapacitate one very briefly.[93]

ATA Gene Therapy

The Ancient Technology Activation gene is a specific gene present in all Ancients, and some of their human descendants, which acts as a key to much of their technology; if the user does not possess the gene, the technology will not activate. The ATA gene instructs various cells in the body to produce a series of proteins and enzymes that interact with the skin, nervous system, and brain, allowing the gene carriers to operate Ancient technology.[94] Though rare naturally in most humans,[95] Dr. Carson Beckett develops a retroviral gene therapy (using a deactivated mouse retrovirus) to transfer the Ancient gene expression to humans;[96] but the treatment only has a 48% success rate.[97] The necessity of the gene in utilizing Ancient technology varies. In some cases, like use of the Control Chair, the gene is required for continued use, while other devices simply need to be initially activated by someone with the gene, after which anyone can use the device. The gene is stronger in some carriers, allowing them to use Ancient technology instinctively while others require training and practice.[94]

The Ancient's security systems that recognize the gene are incredibly sophisticated, a rogue group of Asgard spent years attempting to use a device guarded by it, with no luck.

Natural gene carriers from Earth include Major General Jack O'Neill,[98] Lt. Colonel John Sheppard (he apparently has a very strong form of the gene, and operates Ancient technology almost instinctively), Dr. Carson Beckett,[94] Sgt. Markham (who was killed in action),[99] Dr. Kusanagi (who was mentioned but never seen), and Joe Spencer.[100] Gene carriers by therapy include Dr. Rodney McKay (as the first human trial),[101] Col. Dillon Everett,[102] and some of his troops. Gene carriers of unknown source include Lt. Miller,[103] Dr. Abrams,[104] and Major Lorne.[105] The gene therapy did not work on Dr. Radek Zelenka.[97] The status of Dr. Daniel Jackson as a carrier is uncertain. He utilized Ancient technology after encountering the Ancient Repository that Merlin used in his laboratory. This technology modified Dr. Jackson's genetic make up, so he could resist the effects of being transformed into an Ori Prior, as well as allowing him to house Merlin's consciousness. Whether it modified his genetics to include the Ancient gene, or whether he already possessed it, is unknown. However, the Goa'uld Anubis was able to use Ancient technology due to him being partly Ascended,[106] suggesting that Daniel may also be able to use Ancient technology as he was an ascended being. Whether his ascension or the repository were responsible for his ability to use Ancient technology at the time is unknown, as he has not used any ATA gene-based technology since. Lt. Aiden Ford asked for the gene therapy during the nanovirus crisis,[97] but it was never said if he got it after the crisis. After Ford used a Puddle Jumper to leave Atlantis,[107] series' writer Martin Gero explained in an online message[108] that he does not have the gene, because "The Jumpers, while near and inside Atlantis, are pretty much on autopilot when it comes to landing and taking off."

Pioneered by Carson Beckett, this is a simple injection that will give humans the ATA gene expression required to use most Ancient technology. It is successful in just under 50% of subjects. It takes at least four hours for the therapy to kick in. However, the therapy is not always permanent and might cause diseases. The therapy is achieved through the use of a modified mouse retrovirus (Dr. Beckett once joked that the side effects of the therapy included "dry mouth, headache, the irresistable urge to run in a small wheel...".)

Garage Door Opener (GDO)

In order to request that the iris be opened to allow travellers through, the Garage Door Opener (GDO)[109] transmits a coded radio signal containing an Iris Deactivation Code (IDC) to Stargate Command through the event horizon of the Stargate. If the correct IDC is transmitted, the Iris is opened to allow homecoming travellers. This system is unique to Earth and Atlantis, although the Atlantis expedition uses smaller GDOs, and used to identify individuals instead of teams. Each SG team has a unique multi-digit IDC.

In addition, certain allies of Earth, such as the Tok'ra[110] and Master Bra'tac,[111] have IDCs. Some early allies of the SGC (such as the people from the Land of Light in the first season episode "The Broca Divide") were given boxes made out of an alloy with a unique mixture of isotopes, whose residue could be detected and identified after being sent through the Stargate and destroyed by the Iris. This would act as a non-computerized IDC, prompting SGC to open the iris just as if an IDC had been sent. While the purpose was never stated explicitly, this entry method to the SGC was generally given to off-world allies who were too technologically inexperienced to understand the computerized GDO.

Iris

The iris is a titanium and later trinium/titanium alloy barrier that can open and close over the Stargate, which blocks incoming traffic through the Stargate when closed. The original iris was installed in the pilot episode, Template:Sgcite, to prevent incoming hostile alien races, or weapons from reaching Earth. This is achieved by preventing molecular reintegration and reconstruction due to the close proximity of the Iris to the Event Horizon of the Stargate. The Iris was originally operated by the base computer, however experiences such as those with the Reetu showed this system to be insufficient as any invader could operate the computer. This led to a more efficient biometric system using a handprint detection device operated by one of the Gate Technicians or other personel authorized to open the iris. A manual lever located in the Gateroom is used primarily in case of emergencies such as a power outage at the SGC with a simultaneous incoming wormhole.

SGC operating procedures dictate that the Iris is closed for all incoming traffic, unless first identified by means of a special IDC transmitted by a device nicknamed the 'GDO' (Garage Door Opener). This ensures that only known friendlies are allowed safe arrival to Earth. On rare occasions (and against SGC regulations), the commanding officer present has allowed entrance based on Radio communications alone. The Iris has never actually been physically breached by hostile forces while closed, although some friendly races have circumvented the iris on more than one occasion (Thor, the Tollan, the Nox).

The iris appears to have 20 overlapping blades that swing outwards to form a near-circular opening, and then close again afterwards. This is similar to the way a multi-bladed leaf shutter works in a camera. Other structures that are similar in appearance are iris diaphragms in cameras and the iris of the human eye. When closed, the iris forms a barrier less than 3 μm from the wormhole's event horizon, thereby preventing most forms of matter from properly reintegrating.[112] Objects coming through the wormhole are destroyed instead, accompanied by a ringing thud against the iris. Radio signals are able to penetrate, however, allowing SG teams to request the opening of the iris using their GDOs. In reality, when a shot of Earth's iris opening and closing is needed, the actual animation of it is added in post-production, as the mechanics of it opening and closing would be very difficult to build. In scenes where movement of the iris is not required, a jar-lid shaped prop is just inserted into the Stargate prop. The Atlantis shield is not a physical barrier, but a force field and is created totally through the use of computer animation in post production.

Locator beacon

All SGC personnel are equipped with implanted locator beacons for use with beaming technology. Originally, the beacons were handheld devices or ankle bracelets, but after Dr. Daniel Jackson was taken hostage and separated from his beacon in the season 9 episode "Ethon," the devices were implanted under the skin and are therefore less detectable. Although on the episode "Memento Mori," the chip was removed from Vala in a van while she was being kidnapped by a Trust cell in full knowledge of the transponders' existence.

It also appears that anyone who travels off-world is fitted with the beacons. In the season 9 episode "The Scourge," SG-1 and members of an international diplomatic tour were stranded on the planet host to the Gamma Site after a carnivorous insect species overran it. Upon the arrival of the Odyssey, all of them were beamed to safety. On the other hand, it is possible that the international diplomats were picked up by their life signs.

The devices are referenced several times in Stargate Atlantis, where they are called sub-cutaneous transmitters, manufactured by Devlin Medical Technologies. The devices are rarely shown to actually work, but can be used to remotely beam subjects across great distances.

McKay-Carter Intergalactic Gate Bridge

During the third season of Stargate Atlantis, a project to place a chain of stargates in the void between the Milky Way and Pegasus galaxies is initiated to allow rapid transit between Atlantis and the SGC without the need of a ZPM to power the Stargate.[113] At the time, only the Atlantis gate has a ZPM available, meaning that the return trip from Earth requires a three-week journey in a hyperspace-capable Daedalus-class battlecruiser. To this end, stargates are "harvested" from the surface or orbit of uninhabited planets and deposited accordingly on both ends. When Atlantis' ZPM is depleted[114] the project takes on an added urgency and is made operational shortly afterward.

The McKay-Carter Intergalactic Gate Bridge (named as such by its co-creator Rodney McKay, recognizing Samantha Carter for the original idea) consists of seventeen stargates from the Pegasus network and another seventeen from the Milky Way network. A macro program written by McKay and uploaded to the gates' operating systems before dialing causes them to store incoming matter in their buffers and forward it from one gate to the next along the bridge rather than rematerialize it at the gate that is initially dialed.

Travelers then exit halfway between the two galaxies at the Midway Space Station, which serves as a transfer point. There they use the other gate network (and a second macro program designed for that network) to continue on to their ultimate destination; travelers from Atlantis use a Milky Way gate to travel on to Earth, and similarly travelers from Earth use a Pegasus gate to travel to Atlantis. Using the gate bridge, the travel time between the Pegasus and Milky Way galaxies is just slightly over thirty minutes, making it far more efficient than traveling by hyperdrive.

When the first test of the gate bridge is conducted, only the framework of the station has been completed, so a Puddle Jumper is used. The test is a complete success, and the bridge is declared operational. It is later revealed that since the last gate in the bridge must dial the exit gate, normally either Atlantis or Earth, the macro can be rewritten to dial a different exit gate in the destination galaxy.[115] The station is later destroyed by the self-destruct after the infiltration of the Wraith.

As of Season 5, the Gate bridge has not been rebuilt, because the IOA deemed it an unnecessary risk.

An unused stargate from the defunct Intergalactic Gate Bridge was used to replace the stargate in Atlantis. The original Atlantis stargate was destroyed when the Attero device was briefly activated and overloaded the stargate when it dialed out.

Mobile Analytic Laboratory Probe (M.A.L.P.)

The Mobile Analytic Laboratory Probe (MALP) is a remote-controlled, wheeled, robotic probe, used to explore alien planets without endangering SGC personnel. MALPs contain equipment used to determine such information as the breathability of the atmosphere and the presence of a working DHD on a planet to be explored. Sensors include a high-resolution tiltable color video camera, laser range finder, spectrometer, a small directional microphone, a Geiger counter, sensors for detecting air pressure/temperature, atmospheric composition and even if the MALP is on its side.[89] MALPs were first seen in the Stargate feature film. JPL loaned the production its "Hazbot III" for this purpose.[116]

Infrared scanning was likely installed after "The Broca Divide" when the MALP's lights were broken in transit.[117] They are used in dark situations, such as inspecting the Goa'uld structure in "Within the Serpent's Grasp" [76] and the Lost City in Stargate Atlantis' pilot "Rising".[34] The standard MALP is based on a sturdy six-wheeled chassis, similar to its eight-wheeled counterpart, FRED.[118] However, because of its wheels, the MALP is not fit for all terrains [119], and is completely helpless in space.[34]

In Urgo, it is revealed that there are in fact several kinds of MALPs, with several being visible in the Gate room at once in the introductory sequence of the episode. The Mark II MALP is shown as being considerably bulkier and more sturdy, with a huge manipulator claw and smaller radar dish. Thereafter all MALPs seen in the series are Mark IIs.

MALPs are operated from Stargate Command's (SGC) Control Room by remote or on-site at a planet. From the SGC, communication is achieved via two-way digital transmissions sent through the Stargate's wormhole. Technicians can operate the MALP's robot arm by remote. The robot arm provides servo-precision motion and allows the operator to approach a target with millimeter accuracy.[120] Due to the nature of a Stargate's one-way wormhole, an unattended MALP cannot return to Earth using the same wormhole it came through. MALP's are also capable of performing some tasks on their own, such as automatically surveying the area immediately around the Stargate, and collecting samples. Once a MALP has finished its duties, an SG team member or technician dials the gate on the other side and sends it back.[76] As a result, MALPs that have been sent to planets which are too hostile are abandoned.[120]

Closely related is the Field Remote Expeditionary Device (F.R.E.D.), an eight-wheeled carrier for tools and supplies, and is mostly sent after the planet has been surveyed by a M.A.L.P., immediately before sending a SG team. Among the supplies carried by the F.R.E.D. is a homing device, used by SG teams to locate the Stargate if they are lost. Occasionally, the F.R.E.D. will be used as a place for cover if the team is fired upon. [118]

Naqahdah generator

thumb|right|Tau'ri Naquadah Generator A naqahdah-powered generator that provides colossal amounts of clean energy. In spite of their small size (they appear to be no more than three-quarters of a meter long and can be moved around by hand) they likely produce a power output roughly comparable to several large nuclear power plants. Nonetheless, this is still nowhere near the astronomical power generated by a ZPM, one or more of which are necessary to power the shields that protect Ancient cities and outposts, such as the Antarctica base in Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis itself in Stargate Atlantis, although several naqahdah generators allow a fraction of Atlantis' systems to be operated.

The Earth version of the device was created by Samantha Carter, based on Orbanian designs.[121] The Naqahdah generator has been used to power not only many Earth-based technologies but can be adapted to power other alien technology, including the Ancients'. A Naqahdah generator can also be converted into a devastating bomb,[122]; several are set to be employed in this manner in Atlantis's self-destruct system.[37] The device emits a powerful electromagnetic pulse when detonated, similar to those emitted by nuclear weapons.[123]

The generators have been seen to power a handful of different Earth and Ancient Technology such as on Daedalus class ships. The generators were abandoned on the Odyssey for a ZPM and later, an Asgard computer core. At least one generator powered Prometheus before it was destroyed. A "Mini" Naqahdah generator was mounted to the X699 prototype plasma weapon that was presented to a technology conference by Dr Lee.[124] The Mark II Naqahdah generator was later developed, and is able to operate somewhat reliably at a state of barely controlled overload. This type of generator achieves 600% of the power output of a Mark I, producing sufficient power for two generators to operate the Ancient control chair for a short period, something which previously required a Zero Point Module. Nevertheless, it does not produce enough power to operate the Atlantis main shield, nor can it provide a Stargate with enough power to establish a long-lasting intergalactic wormhole.[37] A pair of these devices were successful in powering the chair in Antarctica.[93] Also, at least two Mark II generators are placed in the ZPM room in Atlantis as a back up power source on Atlantis.[125] In the Last Man, the hologram of McKay states that he is powered by a Mark XII Naqahdah generator which is theoretically able to power the city shield. However it would not be able to power the shield and operate the Stargate or any other systems at the same time.

Zero Point Module

thumb|Zero Point Module (ZPM) An Ancient power source used to power their cities and outposts. ZPMs extract vacuum energy from a small artificially-created region of subspace,[126] and based on the concept of zero-point energy.[127] ZPMs are more powerful and efficient than Naqahdah generators or any energy source on Earth, and can last for thousands of years.[128]

The first ZPM is found by Jack O'Neill in the SG-1 season 7 finale "Lost City" at an abandoned outpost, and used to power Ancient weaponry left behind on Earth to repel Anubis' attack on Earth. The same ZPM allows Stargate Command to open a wormhole to Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy[34]. Another is found on Earth in an alternate timeline and allows Earth to send supplies and reinforcements to Atlantis.[37]. The finding and recapturing of ZPMs is a recurring theme on Stargate Atlantis afterwards, to protect the city from attacks and invasion, to power the city for e.g. space travel and to accelerate Earth ships in-between galaxies. However, they also have destructive powers, which has been misused by Camulus[129], by the Trust [130], and by McKay aboard an Asuran City ship.[131]

Most of the Atlantis characters and aliens pronounce ZPM as Zee-P-M (the US way). The team's Canadian scientist, Rodney McKay, on the other hand, pronounces the abbreviation in the standard English fashion, Zed-P-M. Actor David Hewlett stated in an interview that when he was cast as McKay for Atlantis, he talked with the producers how to set his character's Canadian origin apart. In his opinion, there is no such thing as a Canadian accent despite a few differences in pronunciation, which is mirrored in the show in the pronunction of ZPM as "Zed-P-M".[132]

Shielding

Shields were used by the Ancients aboard their ships and outposts. Ancient shields prove to be almost impenetrable, as long as sufficient power is maintained to operate them. In contrast, the shields of other races, such as the Goa'uld and Asgard, are weakened directly by outside forces, like enemy fire and natural phenomena, causing them to fail or diminish in capacity rather quickly in cases of extreme stress. various types of shields include;

  • Aurora-class shields: The shield of Aurora class warships contours around the ship, like an extra hull, instead of an ordinary bubble.[93] These shields are incredibly powerful, and has a yellow gold-like color. The Orion's shields, operating at well-below full power, were able to withstand a supervolcano's eruption for 4.1 seconds, while using the eruption to propel it out of its hangar.[133]
  • Atlantis' shield: The massive dome-like force field protects the city from enemy attacks,[34] extreme weather,[134] and water pressure when submerged in the ocean.[34] The power required to operate the shield depends on what the shield is doing. When interfaced with a Puddle Jumper's cloak generator, it draws less power than it normally would, though it offers no protection other than invisibility. During normal operation the shield can be sustained by one ZPM. The shield draws a substantial amount of power when under strain. The shield could only be sustained by a single ZPM for just days when under heavy attack from a Wraith fleet,[37] but for 3,300 years under the pressure of thousands of feet of water. Unlike other shields that deplete over time the Atlantis shield is impenetrable as long as sufficient power is available to its generators. [135]
  • Personal shield: A palm-sized shield generator worn on one's person that projects a defensive barrier. It deflects any objects propelled at it, and has inertial dampeners. The shield is activated by the ATA gene, and controlled by the user's mind, though the user must be trained in mind-control to override the conscious desires in the use of the device; for example, the user may believe they do not need the shield, but their subconscious may still believe they require protection, causing the shield to remain active until the danger passes. Once a person activates the device, only that person can use it.[101] However, on at least one occasion, a personal shield is worn by several users. The shield can prevent the user from eating or drinking while the device is active,[101] but experienced users have been known to eat and drink while wearing it. The wearer still requires air to breathe, and thus is not protected from drowning or being buried alive.[136] Three personal shields have so far been encountered. One was discovered in Atlantis and used by Rodney McKay, but its power source is depleted by an energy-absorbing creature.[101] Another was used by a McKay from a Parallel universe to cross over to our universe.[114] The third is used by Lucius Lavin, although its power source was later depleted.[136]
  • Stargate shield: Much like the Iris on the Earth Gate, Atlantis' Stargate is protected by a shield that can be activated at a touch of a button to prevent any matter from materializing beyond the event horizon. Unlike the iris, it is transparent and one can see the suppressed kawoosh and impact of objects prevented from rematerializing.[34] The Shield has yet to be breached by anything, but a "back-door" is coded into the shield's control system by Dr. McKay, allowing him to deactivate it remotely from an off world location and prevented anyone else (including the inhabitants of Atlantis) from reactivating it.
  • Force shield: An energy barrier, also called a force-field or simply a shield. Goa'uld force shields work on a frequency oscillation principle, so a very fast-moving object can bypass it at the right moment.[57] Goa'uld motherships are protected by force shields,[74] as are some ground-based facilities.[137] Force shields are also installed inside ships to restrict access to certain areas,[57] and to contain hull breaches.[138] Some powerful Goa'uld are equipped with personal force shields activated with a button on their hand device. These shields react proportionally to the amount of kinetic energy of incoming matter, so they can be penetrated by relatively slow-moving objects such as a thrown knife.[118] The Tok'ra have made force shield technology available to the SGC.[24] The Lucian Alliance has also obtained shield technology, and it appears to block any solid object, regardless of velocity.
  • Ori shields: Several forms of Ori shields have been depicted. Ori ships are equipped with powerful shields that are impervious to almost any attack.[20] In Template:Sgcite, a Prior generates a force-field that uses the energy of incoming weapons fire to expand. The shield is projected through the Stargate and persists even after the Prior is destroyed, and eventually covers the entire planet after absorbing the energy of an Earth-made Mark-IX naqahdriah-enhanced nuclear bomb. It then collapses the planet into a quantum singularity, to serve as the power source for a nearby Supergate. The Orici, Adria, is protected by a personal shield generated by a pendant around her neck. According to her, it contains a piece of Celestis, the Ori holy city. It protects her against the Dakara superweapon in Template:Sgcite. In Template:Sgcite, she extends the shield around SG-1 and Ba'al to protect them against a mechanical dragon.

Ring Transporter

thumb|right|250px|Transport rings with a transport in progress Originally developed and used by the Ancients, but later used by the Goa'uld and the Tok'ra. All matter inside the rings is dematerialized and transported via matter stream to another set of rings in a different location where it is then rematerialized. The five or eight rings levitate slightly off the ground and stack on top of each other during operation. Each ring transporter platform weighs 12.9 tons, but what components are used in the "platform" is unknown.[139] The rings are roughly half the diameter of a Stargate and function under similar principles. The matter within the first set of rings is swapped with the matter in the second set of rings. A single set of rings can also be used to transfer matter over short distances.

After a completed transport, the rings move back into their storage platform and deactivate. The rings themselves do not transport. Some ring platforms are portable and can be moved when inactive. They have sensors that detect other active transport rings in an area. Transport rings are also used to enter and exit spacecraft, with one set of rings inside the craft and another set of rings mounted outside the hull. This is commonly seen with the Goa'uld Tel'tak cargo ships and Al'kesh,[77] and some of the Earth ships.[140] It is possible to intercept a matter stream that is in transport by interposing a set of mobile rings between the sending rings and the planned receiving rings. However, such an intercept requires that the entire matter stream be captured by the intercepting rings; otherwise, the transported people will not fully reintegrate and die.

Stargate

Also known as Astria Porta in Ancient,[141] were created and distributed by the Ancients across several galaxies, along with Dial-Home Devices[77] to control them, forming the Stargate Network.[55] A traveller may use any Stargate to travel almost instantaneously to any other Stargate in the system, so long as he knows the "address," a combination of at least seven symbols (six for the 3D position and one for the point of origin) that must be entered on the DHD. A Stargate is a one-way portal; it can only be entered from the side it is activated at. Simultaneous access is impossible. The Stargate is often considered to be the Ancients most famous creation, as the Ancients are often called the "Gate Builders".[58] Because the Goa'uld are scavengers, they claimed that they were the builders to make the populations of the planets they enslaved worship them as gods.

"Eye of the Gods"

A large obelisk located not far from the Stargate of the Sodan world, It transports people to another location where a similar transporter is located to get back. An energy signature is detected within the column of stones, although it remains unknown how the device functions.[142] A control crystal is required to activate the obelisk. Without the crystal, the obelisk can be transported to, but cannot transport people back.[143] Morgan le Fay uses similar obelisks to transport Merlin and those with him to various planets throughout the Milky Way, which also contains command overrides for the DHD and is able to distinguish between a regular human and an Orici.[144]

Sangraal

Also known as the Holy Grail, is a weapon designed by Merlin to neutralize ascended beings, including the Ori, but cannot target a specific group of ascended but rather wipes all of them out within the weapon's range. The weapon consists of several devices working together, with a red stone as the "key" to make it work.[144] According to Daniel Jackson, the notion that the Grail was a cup or chalice was a late addition to the myth, but some chroniclers originally described the Holy Grail as a stone that fell from the heavens.[20] Exactly how it works is unknown, but the Asgard have surmised that it's an energy transfer device, similar to a Zero Point Module, except that the energy is channeled not from sub-space into ordinary space-time, but rather into the dimension occupied by Ascended beings. The Sangraal is launched through the Supergate by Dr. Jackson[145] and confirmed to have destroyed the Ori.[146][147]

"Arthur's Mantle"

A device built by Merlin that pushes matter 'out of phase' with normal reality, making everything within its area of effect invisible and intangible. It also doubles as a computer. The device was used to conceal his research on the Sangraal, a weapon capable of destroying ascended beings. The console was concealed in the Avalon cave under Glastonbury Tor, England. The device was named by Merlin's trusted aids, the Knights of the Round Table. In order to access the data from its computer, the user must be out of phase, to prevent the ascended Ancients from discovering it. The device itself is accessible from either dimension, allowing a person to enter and exit. Although being out of phase hides the user from both the Ancients and conventional observers, those wearing Sodan personal cloaking device, which operate on a similar principle, can observe affected matter, though they cannot interact with it. The device is accidentally accessed by Colonels Carter and Mitchell, who were rendered out of phase by the device. With the eventual help of Daniel Jackson, they manage to return to normal; however, its power source is permanently depleted in the process.[143] The device is then exploited as a defensive weapon by Colonel Carter, first on a village under threat by the Ori[148] then on the entire planet Earth in an alternate reality.[149]

Communication device with stones

A dome device with a blue crystal designed to communicate across galaxies. Daniel Jackson theorized that it could help find Ancients who would share knowledge with them freely. The device allows the exchange of minds between bodies when used in conjunction with communication stones. The receiving body has to be in close proximity of a similar stone to receive the mind. The device draws its power from subspace (the same way a ZPM does), and also uses it to allow communication over large distances. According to the number of slots on the device, it can link twelve individuals simultaneously. Placing the stone into a slot at the base of the unit initiates the device, and a blue crystal at the top lights when it is active. One of these devices was discovered under Glastonbury Tor, and it was subsequently used by Dr. Jackson and Vala. It transported their minds to the Ori galaxy into the bodies of a married couple, Harrid and Sallis.[141] Their minds were sent back by another similar device, but the transfer was cut short by a Prior. Col. Mitchell and Teal'c eventually destroyed it by throwing it into the Stargate's unstable vortex, bringing Daniel and Vala back.[16] Several months later, Vala Mal Doran contacted the SGC from the Ori Galaxy using the device thanks to the Ori underground resistance, and warned SG-1 about the nearing Ori invasion of the Milky Way. However, the link was cut by her husband Tomin.[150]

The communication stones allows two individuals with the ATA Gene to periodically see through the other's eyes.[151] When interfaced with a long-range communication device, the stones allow the user to take direct control over the body of another being, but without giving access to the host's memories. The stones are activated by someone with the gene before being used on the long-range communication device,[141] and also have to be in close proximity to the user. SG-1 retrieved one of these stones from the same planet where the quantum mirror was discovered. The devices were eventually stored in Daniel Jackson's lab. One of the stones was activated by Jack O'Neill, which established a psychic link with Joe Spencer, a barber from Indiana who owned a similar stone retrieved from an archeological dig in Egypt. Joe was able to see O'Neills memories recalled during O'Neills briefings, and subsequently based several stories on vision-like experiences.[151] The two stones were later used by Jackson and Vala to access the Ancient long-range communication device. Another two stones were owned by Harrid and Sallis in the Ori Galaxy.[16]

Control Chair

Is a chair-shaped neural interface which allows the user to remotely control systems on whatever facility the chair is installed in, such as the Ancient City Ship or smaller Ancient outposts like the one in Antarctica. The chairs, like most Ancient technology, requires the Ancient Technology Activation gene.[34] They are primarily used to fire and control Drone Weapons,[37] though they are also shown to be used to pilot spacecraft in addition to more minor systems such as holographic projectors and power distribution.[93] They are normally powered by a Zero Point Module, but can be powered by Mark II Naqahdah reactors in a "controlled overload", which provides just enough energy to activate the chair three times before the reactor burns out.[37] Two chairs have been encountered in the Milky Way – Proclarush Taonas and the Antarctica outpost on Earth.[111] In the Pegasus Galaxy, chairs are located in the tower of Atlantis [37] and its sister cities.[152] They are also present in Ancient Aurora class Starships as well.

DNA Resequencer

A genetic manipulation device, which "resequences" to an ultra-extreme state of human advancement, granting them what appeared to be superhuman powers. It establishes a connection between evolution and spirituality.[153] The device is often used by the antagonists.[153][24] The Goa'uld attempted to use the machine to create humans with superpowers to take as hosts.[153][24][87] Humans in this advanced state are called "hok'taur", a Goa'uld slang combination of the words "hok" meaning advanced and "tau'ri" meaning human.[153]

The device works by altering a subject's DNA and consequently increasing their brain activity from roughly 10% up to 90% (based on the popular but inaccurate myth that humans only use 10% of their brain at any given time).[24] Depending on the length of time for which the machine was used, various characters were shown to have abilities such as telekinesis and telepathy,[153][24] super-human senses and strength,[24] supernatural health and self healing,[24][154] perfect memory, and the power to heal by touch.[153][154] The show's Ascended beings possessed similar supernatural abilities of the same order but in far more extreme magnitudes and proficiency.[155][156] It was confirmed in Season 9 of SG-1,[24] that through extreme evolution, such as that provided by the DNA Resequencer, a being would gradually acquire Ascended powers until genuinely Ascending themselves.[24] This solidified the idea that Ascension was the evolutionary target of life in the Stargate universe.[24]

The prop consists of three components. Two of the components are physical but the third is computer generated. The first component is a pedestal that rests on the floor. The actor would stand on the pedestal. This would draw attention to the actor using the device and was also a way to show that they were using it. Above the user was the second component, an orange globe. This was what appeared to be the technological part of the device (at least the first time the device appeared).[157] Later on in the editing process the third component was added, a computer generated energy field which appears to paralyze the user. Additionally, computer generated representations of DNA surround the user.

Repository of knowledge

The Repository of the Ancients is a device that stores all knowledge of the Ancients. The interface is a metallic circle, with a dark window in the middle, and is usually attached to a wall. The console is designed to allow a human to place his/her head into it, whereupon the device grabs them by the temples and downloads the entire database into their mind. The transfer of knowledge from this device can cause serious problems for beings whose physiology is not prepared to take the mental strain. The device was used on two separate occasions by Jack O'Neill, both times threatening his life; during both of these times, he was able to build a powerful generator[58]. He was also shown to be able to create a weapon capable of defeating any Replicators[4]and use healing powers.[111] Daniel was able to control the repository to create and finish the anti-Ori weapon Sangraal.[144][23]

Stasis chamber

A device designed to put whoever is in to suspended animation. However, in long periods of times, like ten thousand years, the person inside gets so old that, if revived, they will die in a short period of time.[135] One of the devices was located inside the Antarctic outpost, and used by Colonel O'Neill, who put himself in stasis to slow the Ancient knowledge in his brain from killing him.[111] Another chamber was encountered on Atlantis where an alternate version of Elizabeth Weir had survived for 10,000 years, reawakening every 3,300 years to rotate Atlantis' ZPM.[135] The clone of Carson Beckett enters a pod to prevent death that was caused deteriorating cells from the cloning process. A third stasis chamber contained Khalek, a clone created by Anubis using his pre-ascended DNA.[24] Another device is found containing Merlin himself, having stayed in suspended animation for thousands of years when SG-1 enlist his help in the creation of the Sangraal.[144] Similar devices are used in Aurora class ships, for use on extended voyages. These stasis chambers were egg-shaped, and required the user to lie down. The pods can be modified so that the occupants can participate in virtual reality, allowing their minds to remain active during long voyages. The pods interface with the ship's computer, so the crew can work on tasks while asleep.[158]

Time dilation device

A device capable of altering speed in a way that time passes in an area around itself. The first Ancient time dialation technology was in the Pegasus galaxy, where the Lanteans had constructed a refuge on a planet known as the Cloister, which had one entrance. The entire 'valley' region was engulfed by the time dilation field that accelerated time within its position in order to allow the inhabitants to learn how to ascend. The field was a potent defensive mechanism as it prevents objects from entering the bubble from orbit, as they would be destroyed from the stresses generated by the field. The device is powered by a ZPM.[159] A second form was later seen in the Milky Way, used by Morgan le Fay as one of her tests of a persons search for the Sangraal. This model had a set field around the location of the mountain, which almost froze objects that entered the field and was the reason why many human villagers were lost on the quest as they had become trapped in the field. However, as part of the test, a set path is present that allowed movement without being compromised.[144]

An Asgard version of the time dilation device is used in an attempt to trap the Replicators on the planet Halla.[66] Another is loaned to Earth to seal an interdimensional gap in a black hole.[53] The Asgard core on the Odyssey has a built-in time dilation device, used to escape the Ori in Template:Sgcite.

Time travel machine

Designed by Janus, the time machine was shaped to fit in the rear compartment of a Puddle Jumper, and can transport the entire ship through time. In an alternate timeline when the Atlantis Expedition traveled to the city, and the shields fail due to lack of power, Sheppard, Weir and Zelenka became trapped within a Puddle Jumper equipped with the device. Sheppard tried to pilot the ship, but activates the time device. Weir traveled back through time to before the Ancients abandoned the city, which prompted the council to destroy the prototype.[135] However, another time device, also presumably constructed by Janus, was discovered in the Milky Way, where the ship had been abandoned.[160] The Jumper was eventually used to take SG-1 to Ancient Egypt to steal a ZPM from Ra, accidentally changing history. Fortunately, alternate versions of the members were able to travel back in time and correct history.[161]

A similar device was discovered a few years earlier. This was much larger, which dialed several planets through the Stargate to form a subspace bubble. The machine was flawed, as it only creates a short-term time loop, which forces the planets that the device dialed to relive the same ten hours again and again. It is powered by the ionizied atoms in the atmosphere caused by the geo-magnetic storms on the planet. Two capacitors start to hum and emit static electricity that is channeled to the Stargate. The Ancients originally created it to stop a plague that was wiping them out, although it eventually only forced them to keep doing the same thing over and over. In the end, they were forced to shut down the device.[162] The reason the time-loop started was because of the way the time machine is powered. When time resets, the geo-magnetic storms build up again and power the machine again and again and again.

  • "Ascendometer": An Ancient device used to measure a person's synaptic activity. Designed to work alongside the DNA Resequencer, the scanner analyzes a subject's current physiological status and feeds the information back into the resequencer. It was able to locate the areas of the brain that were used for advanced abilities such as telekinesis, and was apparently used by the Ancients during their pursuit of Ascension. One of the scanners was discovered in the lab where Anubis created and experimented on Khalek, a clone created by Anubis using his pre-ascension DNA. After the SGC brought Khalek back to Earth for study, the scanner was brought with them and used to monitor his development. The device was nicknamed "ascendometer" by Colonel Mitchell.[24] The device was later sent to Atlantis and used on Rodney McKay after he accidentally manipulated his own DNA.[163]
  • Clava Thessara Infinitas: Ancient for "Key to Infinite Treasure", a circular tablet that supposedly holds the location of a cache of Ancient weapons. Daniel Jackson believes it to be a hoax. In Template:Sgcite, the Goa'uld Athena abducts Vala Mal Doran and probes her mind in an attempt to find the treasure. In Template:Sgcite, SG-1 goes to a planet in search of it, only to end up being mistaken for hostage takers in a museum. In Template:Sgcite, the Clava Thessara Infinitas is used as a pretense in a plan by SG-1 to capture Adria.
  • Healing device: A device with the power to rejuvenate tissue. The device was used by the Goa'uld Telchak to develop the sarcophagus technology. The device is cube-shaped and covered with inscriptions. The device is far more potent than the sarcophagus derived from it, quickly driving humans in its vicinity to madness. It can also reanimate the dead, turning them into mindlessly violent and nearly unstoppable killing machines. After Anubis defeated Telchak, the device remained hidden in Honduras for many centuries, where it became the source of the Fountain of Youth myth. Later, after he ascended, Anubis gained access to the Ancients' own version and was able to construct his which he used to animate an army of Kull warriors. Daniel Jackson and Bill Lee eventually sought the device to develop a weapon that can counter-act the device's life-giving energy, and thus defeat a Kull warrior. They found the device, but were kidnapped by Guerillas, who activated the device and went mad.[82] The device would later be mentioned in a proposed plot for Martin Lloyd's Wormhole X-Treme! television movie by Cameron Mitchell, where it transformed everyone at the SGC into zombies. [164]
  • Life Signs Detector: A PDA-shaped device that can detect and locate life signs of humans, Wraith, and signs of radiation and power. It also seems to have other functions that only a person with the ATA gene can access. When used in combination with another, smaller, hand held device, it serves as a medical scanner. The name was introduced by Aiden Ford.[34] The life signs detector was capable of differentiating between human (blue) and Wraith (red) life signs. However, they do not differentiate between human life signs.

Starships

The first Earth-built spaceship incorporating alien technologies, the X-301, appears in the season 4 episode Template:Sgcite. Since then, a number of other Earth ships have been introduced in both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, including the F-302 fighter, the Prometheus battlecruiser, and the Daedalus-class battlecruiser. Earth ships incorporate technologies from various sources, most significantly the Goa'uld and the Asgard.

The Goa'uld operate a variety of starships, including Ha'tak motherships, Al'kesh bombers, and death glider fighters. The control systems of Goa'uld ships are based on crystals,[165] a feature copied by the Earth ship Prometheus.[65] Since the collapse of the Goa'uld order in Template:Sgcite, most of their fleet have fallen into the hands of the Free Jaffa Nation[166] and the Lucian Alliance.[56]

Weapons

Real or semi-real technology

MP5

The producers of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis collaborate closely with the United States Air Force. While the USAF is portrayed in a positive light in the series, the franchise gets free USAF weaponry and access to fighter jets.[citation needed] The FN P90 is the favoured weapon of SG-1 until season 10, replacing the Heckler & Koch MP5 in approximately season 4 of Stargate SG-1 (Template:Sgcite).[citation needed] The P90 is also used by teams on Stargate Atlantis. The Heckler and Koch MP7 and G36 have been seen used by SG1 on a few occasions, although not often. SPAS-12 and USAS-12 shotguns are seen being used numerous times against the replicators with great effect. Other SG teams are mostly seen using variants of the M16/M4 rifles, although Russian SG teams typically used Kalishnikov-based assault rifles.

Anti-Replicator Gun (ARG)

A modified firearm first seen in The Return, they are designed by the SGC based on the replicator disruptor created by Jack O'Neill in New Order to use against the Asuran replicators. They seem to be loosely based on the H&K MP7 Personal Defence Weapon or XM8 compact carbine version. A much larger, planetary-scale Anti-Replicator Weapon is currently being developed, in an effort to eliminate the Asuran Replicators entirely. As of the season 4 episode Lifeline, the Asurans are immune to the effects of the ARG as resulted when Ronon fired his ARG at Oberoth. It is unknown when if ever the SGC and Atlantis will be able to get the ARG working again.

Dakara superweapon

An extremely powerful device hidden inside a monument on Dakara, which was later turned into a Goa'uld temple. It was once used by the Ancients to re-create life in the galaxy after a devastating plague.[167] It is capable of destroying all life in the galaxy as well. Anubis intends to use it to repopulate the galaxy according to his own designs. However, Samantha Carter recognizes that it is also the galaxy's only hope against the Replicators. The weapon uses an energy wave that decomposes matter into its constituent parts. She, Selmak, and Ba'al reprogram the device to emit an energy wave matching that of the Replicator Disruptor, and send it through all the Stargates in the galaxy at once, and wipes out the Replicators. In Template:Sgcite, Anubis conquers Dakara and almost completes his plan to wipe the galaxy clean, but is stopped by Oma Desala. Confronted by how close they came to annihilation, the Free Jaffa Nation agrees to dismantle the device. However, in Template:Sgcite, the weapon is used again to fight the Ori. The Jaffa High Council uses it to eliminate the crew of an Ori mothership, so they can capture it. Their attack is successful, but the Orici Adria is protected from the weapon by her personal shield, takes the mothership to Dakara and destroys the weapon from orbit.

Drone weapon

An extremely powerful cross-projectile/energy weapons, shaped like a meter-long squid, capable of autonomously targeting and destroying its target, even if it is moving extremely fast. These are the Ancient's main type of weapon. In the Pegasus Galaxy, drones are rare in the aftermath of the loss of the Ancients' war against the Wraith. Only a few dozen remained in Atlantis, which were used up after the siege by the Wraith.[37] A larger supply is found in another city ship, which is later used to replenish Atlantis' armory.[152] They are also found on Puddle Jumpers[34] and Aurora class battleships.[158] The Asurans also use drones. In the Milky Way, thousands of drones have been discovered in Ancient outposts such as the Antarctica outpost.[111] Drones are partially intelligent weapons that are capable of seeking, tracking, and engaging targets on their own accord. They are normally controlled by an Ancient Control Chair that reads the operator's mind and can send thousands of drones swarming to attack an entire fleet at once.[111] They appear to be guided by a central control system using various available sensors[152] and can be controlled either by continuous operator control[37], or in a fire-and-forget manner.[152] One Aurora-class ship is seen to have two separate control chairs, one of which is used for the firing drones, which can be fired at the ship they are launched from, to surgically remove or disable certain sections. [168]

An active drone envelops a bright yellow glow. For normal operations, a ZPM is required,[111] but can be powered by Mark II Naqahdah generators to allow the launch of Drone weapons (but will lose power after three uses).[37] Drones also need an outside power source, and will shut down in mid-flight if this power source is disabled. A drone was observed causing a relatively small explosion on impact,[152] while a swarm enveloped a Kull warrior while on its way from Anubis' attacking fleet.[111] Conversely, two Drone Weapons are enough to completely destroy a Goa'uld Ha'tak if it hits a critical spot[160] and a single drone can seriously damage a Wraith cruiser.[169] Drones have the ability to shield itself from impact with matter to a certain degree. Drones have also been observed passing through ships, with unused ones heading back to their launch site,[111] and can be used under water.[115]

There is a smaller variant called mini-drones. It is theorized that the drones are used to guard certain areas against people without the ancient gene, as was the case on queen Harmony's planet where only the wearer of a special ancient "key" (pendant) can control the mini-drones from the "test site" where the Ancient's developed mini-drone technology, which was perfected in Pegasus while the normal sized drones were invented in the Milky Way.[170][171]

Hand device

frame|Goa'uld hand device. Also known as a "ribbon device", the hand device is a metal, glove-like object with a large red gem set in the palm.[55] It is the personal weapon of the Goa'uld and requires naqahdah in the bloodstream to operate.[3] They utilize a modified version of a staff weapon's power source channeled through amplification crystals, and are thought-controlled.[172] The hand device can generate a shockwave that throws back anyone in its path with great force.[55] The Jaffa attribute the Goa'uld ability to hurl people through the air as a sign of their divine power.[173] The hand device can also generate an energy stream to a person's head that causes severe pain and eventual death.[55] This function creates a mental link between Goa'uld and victim, which may allow the Goa'uld host to send a message through.[172] Hand devices can also be used to block zat blasts,[174] and have buttons on the wrist for controlling Goa'uld technology.[175][176]

Intar

Weapon used for training purposes. Intars can be built into many different types of weapons, including Earth firearms, and fire a red energy burst that stuns the target. SG-1 first encounters intars in a training camp of Apophis.[177] The SGC adopts intars for training purposes as well.[178]

Kull disruptor

A weapon developed with the Tok'ra to fight Kull Warriors. Originally installed on a Transphase Eradication Rod, it has since been shrunk to fit as an attachment most SGC small arms such as the P90 and M249. As Kull Warriors seemed impervious to both energy weapons and standard force, the Kull Disruptor became the only thing capable of stopping them.

The disruptor technology is based on the same Ancient Healing Device that Anubis used to animate the super-soldiers. The prototype weapon was only partially effective, usually requiring at least two shots to bring down one of the super-soldiers, though it is evident that the technology had been refined later on. In more recent episodes, Kull Warriors have been brought down by just one disruptor shot.

Nuclear weapons

Using the fictional elements of naqahdah and naqahdriah, Stargate Command has developed a number of enhanced nuclear weapons with explosive yields far beyond that of their real-life equivalents.

  • "Goa'uld Buster" Naquadah-enhanced nuclear weapon with a yield exceeding 1000 megatons, used in the episode Template:Sgcite against the Ha'taks of Apophis (Stargate) and his son Klorel. It was developed at Area 51 by Col. Samuels and Col. Maybourne, and uses a Type-12A warhead made from the same radar-absorbing material as on stealth aircraft. The weapons proved to be ineffective due to the unanticipated presence of Goa'uld defensive force shields.

  • Horizon weapons platform The codename for a MIRV weapons platform containing six Mark IX tactical nuclear weapons and four decoys. The platform is deployed from orbit by a Daedalus-class battlecruiser and flies under its own power into the atmosphere of the target planet. Once its heat shield detaches, the real and decoy warheads follow separate trajectories to the surface. The first Horizon platform is deployed by the battlecruiser Apollo in a preemptive strike against the Asuran homeworld to destroy their fleet of ships before they can be used against Earth. The mission is a complete success, though the Asurans attack Atlantis in retaliation.[179]
  • Mark III The Daedalus is stated to be equipped with these ship-to-ship missiles in Template:Sgcite. In the original movie, a mark III was carried along and would be detonated near the gate as a last resort. The device is stolen by Ra, enhanced with what is presumably naquadah. The device was to be sent through the gate back to earth but it was beamed to Ra's ship instead where it exploded.
  • Mark V Stargate Command planned to destroy Abydos with one of these weapons in Template:Sgcite.
  • Mark VIII A tactical missile designed against capital ships.[citation needed]
  • Mark IX "Gate Buster" A naqahdriah-enhanced, multi-gigaton nuclear weapon designed by Samantha Carter at Area 51 for the purpose of vaporizing Stargates and anything else in a 100 mile radius,[21], by detonating the naqahdah in the Gate.[15] It has safeguards to protect against electromagnetic or other forms of interference. The prototype of the weapon is seen deployed in Template:Sgcite, although it failed to destroy the target Stargate as it was being protected by a Prior.

Replicator Disruptor

The most effective weapon to combat Replicators, it disrupts communication between cells, rendering each one inert. When fired, any Replicator in its blast-radius has its cells blocked out from each other, causing them to fall apart. Even if standard Replicators could be stopped by projectile weapons, only the Disruptor can terminate Human-form-Replicators. The weapon is created by Jack O'Neill, who had the entire Ancient Database downloaded into his mind at the time, in conjunction with Asgard computers.[4] However, the Replicators are able to become immune to the device, requiring the recalibration of the disruptor.[180] The actual prop was piston-driven and had a trigger device inside. Because the model shop knew that Richard Dean Anderson would play with it off-screen, they made it extra-robust.[181] Area 51 produced a version of the Replicator Disruptor specifically to combat the Asurans. (see "Anti-Replicator Gun").

Shock grenade

Reusable spherical device that emits a blinding light and a deafening sound, rendering all individuals in its vicinity unconscious. Exposure to the device can cause temporary blindness.[74] They are often deployed in advance of an attack force to neutralize opposition.[176][182]

Staff weapon

thumb|Staff weapon. Standard weapon used by the Jaffa, consisting of a metal quarterstaff with an almond-shaped head that splits open to fire a powerful energy blast. There is a counterbalancing club on the back end, allowing the weapon to be used in melee combat at close ranges.[55] It is powered by liquid naqahdah.[58] In skilled hands it can be quite effective,[79] but it is less accurate and slower to fire than Earth-made firearms; Jack O'Neill describes it as a "weapon of terror" rather than of war.[1] Heavier models of the weapon can be slung at the waist by a strap,[183][184] or mounted on fixed or mobile platforms to act as artillery support.[137] Goa'uld ships are equipped with large-scale versions of these weapons.[55] The Sodan use a variant of the staff weapon with the back half removed, making it light and easier to carry.[142] This gives the Sodan staff the advantage of being able to be used one-handed, and it allows the weapon to be slung over the back, although it removes the weapon's melee ability.

Zat'n'ktel (Zat)

The zat'n'ktel (pronounced "ZAT-nik-a-tel", usually shortened to "zat") is commonly used sidearm shaped like a small snake curved into an "S" shape, that springs forward when activated. One shot from the zat stuns (though its effectiveness varies with different people), a second shot kills, and a third shot disintegrates.[76] The producers eventually regretted introducing the disintegration feature and retconned it out of existence after season 3; an in-joke is made of this in the episode Template:Sgcite, where Martin Lloyd suggests it and a character replies "that's the quite possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard you say." Zat blasts can be transmitted through conductive materials like metals,[185] and can also be used to either destroy electronic equipment[137] or as a power source.[111]
