College Hockey East (CHE) is an ACHA Division III League comprised of smaller colleges and universities in Western Pennsylvania. ACHA DIII gives small schools the opportunity to compete in college hockey, other universities field DII and DIII teams as JV teams for their ACHA DI or DII teams.
History
The league began in 1971 under the name Western Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Hockey Association (WPIHA). The WPIHA renamed the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Hockey Association (WPCHA) a couple of years later, and this name lasted from 1971 until the end of the 2002 season when the league was renamed to College Hockey East, reflecting the growth of the league outside of Pennsylvania.
Format
A varying number of teams compete in two or three divisions each year. In addition, there are some years where CHE has schools being evaluated for full membership which are known as provisional members.
