Fight Like Apes

Fight Like Apes are an Irish music band formed in Dublin in 2006. Their members are Tom (bass), Adrian (drums), "Pockets" (so named because of his tendency to "pocket" cigarette lighters) on synth and Maykay on vocals and synth.

Phantom FM in Dublin and Irish music show The Night Shift on Channel 6 have championed the band from their early days, particularly DJ Sinister Pete, and they are now receiving radio play on the BBC from, among others, Zane Lowe, Marc Riley, Jonathon Ross and Steve Lamacq[1].

The band were nominated for two Meteor Awards in 2008. One for Best Live Performance for their November 2007 gig at Whelan's, and the other for Best Irish Band.

Fight Like Apes have made festival appearances at the T In The Park 2008 on the Futures Stage SXSW festival in Austin, Texas[2] and on the BBC Introducing[3] stage at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival. They have also recorded sessions for Marc Riley on BBC Radio 6. They also recently played at the 2FM New Band Stage at Oxegen 2008 in Punchestown.

Their musical influences include Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Mclusky, Spoon, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Patti Smith, The Apples in Stereo, Elf Power, Built to Spill, My Bloody Valentine, Chapterhouse, Devo, Sonic Youth, Roxy Music, Talking Heads.

The band spent a month in Seattle recording tracks for their debut album, produced by John Goodmanson. [1] The album, titled Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion, was released on September 26 2008. [2] [4]. They played a sold-out launch show at Whelans in Dublin, which was broadcast live on Phantom FM on the day of release. They followed this by touring the UK backing up The Ting Tings & The Prodigy.

2009 looks to be a good year for the band as they released their album in the UK on January 26, have been picked up by Sony Japan to release the album there, have headlined the Levi's One To Watch tour and have been nominated for 3 Meteor Music Awards in Ireland for Best Band, Best Live Act & Best Album. They will also play at the 2009 Trinity Ball.
