The first series ran on BBC One from 3 September 2007 to 21 September 2007 and was presented by Caroline Flack and Reggie Yates and filmed in Fernando de Noronha, Brazil.[1][2]


Series 1

1 Island 3 weeks 10 adventurers

Synopsis

Having arrived on Scorpion Island, the adventurers are divided into two teams, known as Sting and Claw, consisting of five members each. Over the following three weeks the teams must complete various challenges in order to gain various advantages, such as extra time.[1]

During the second week the teams collect Powerplayers for headstarts in the final challenge to escape from the island. On the third week contestants have to use their Powerplayers to gain time advantages. The score was Claw on 2 and Sting on 1. The final challenge was Shadow Mountain Highway. Team Claw got a 2 minute headstart and eventually won, since Sting's Kyran and Oscar received minor injuries climbing.

Series 1 also aired in Canada in January 2009 and was broadcast on YTV (TV channel).

Contestants

Team Claw (Rock Camp 5 members)

  • Barbara Okrenta- chosen by The Island to be the first member of Secret Camp for leadership and going first when walking across hot coals.
  • Haley Smith- chosen by Barbara to be the second member of secret camp but later traded to Team Sting.
  • James Holder- chosen by Barbara and Haley to be the third member of Secret Camp.
  • Ayesha Freedman- chosen by Barbara, Haley, and James to be the fourth member of Secret Camp.
  • Kyran Bishop- chosen by Barbara, Haley, James and Ayesha to be the fifth member of Secret Camp but later traded to Team Sting.

Note: Helen and Sam were later traded from Team Sting to Team Claw on Day 12 during Reverse Bungees.

Team Sting (Tree Camp 5 members)

  • Helen Mckaigue- not chosen for Secret Camp but later traded to Team Claw.
  • Lianna Hoppe- not chosen for Secret Camp.
  • Joe Williams- not chosen for Secret Camp.
  • Oscar Samant Laidlaw- not chosen for Secret Camp.
  • Sam Fraser- not chosen for Secret Camp but later traded to team Claw.

Note: Haley and Kyran were later traded from Team Claw to Team Sting on Day 12 during Reverse Bungees.


  • Secret Camp was a camp in which during the first week competitors were 'not returning to Beach Camp' (Caroline specifically said that they weren't returning to Beach Camp not eliminated) would go as they built Team Claw.

Challenges

Drop Off (All 10 adventurers) - The ten must abseil out of a helicopter as it hovers more than 30 metres above unknown waters and swim to a waiting pontoon.

Fire Walk(All 10 adventurers) - All ten contestants must walk across hot coals naked. ----

Abandon Ship! (James and Sam VS Ayesha and Haley) - A mysterious ship has drifted into the bay - the four challengers must scale the ship’s mighty 30 - metre masts as it sways in the rough waters off Scorpion Island.

Sea Slalom (Joe & James VS Sam and Oscar) - The four challengers are dragged through the treacherous waters off Scorpion Island while trying to grab targets.

Rock n' Roll(Lianna and Joe VS Helen and Ayesha) - Working in teams of two, the challengers propel from a cliff face whilst trying connect ropes to pegs in the cliff to create a puzzle shaped like a scorpion.

Para Shoot (Kryan VS Helen)- Challengers went para sailing whilst trying to shoot balls at floating targets in the water.

Double Trouble(Barbara and James VS Lianna and Helen) - Two people from each team walk on a zip line while trying to connect ends of their team colored flag to the zip line. Team Sting won this challenge.

Landing on Water (Joe & Lianna VS Ayesha & Kryan) - Two people from each team search for glow sticks inside a half sunken plane wreck. Team Sting won this challenge.

Colourfall (James,Haley and Barbara VS Joe, Sam and Helen) - Three people from each team must collect team coloured balls as they climb against a torrent of white water up a raging waterfall. Team Claw won this challenge.

Bike Lane (Haley & Kryan VS Oscar and Helen) - Two people from each team go one at a time trying to bike across an extremely thin lane 20 metres above one of Scorpion Island's deepest gorges. Team Claw won this challenge.

Stacked (All 10 adventurers)- Teams race head to head to build enormous totem poles, one person on a rope staking the pieces of the pole and the others pulling other ropes to move him/her around.

Reverse Bungees(All 10 adventurers)- All of both teams are attached to bungees. Two of each team, are raised up. *Note: This isn't necessarily a challenge, it was the way of swapping two players of each team to the other team. For more, see above (Contestants).

A Bridge Too Far (Sam and James VS Haley and Oscar)- Two people from each team on at a time attempt to cross a rickety bridge which is missing huge parts and falls down on one side quite often. Team Sting won this at first, but Team Claw used their 'take away' powerplay, and took away some of their time and therefore won.

Landslide!(Sam and Barbara VS Lianna and Haley)- Two people from each team race up a raging mudslide, with mud, steam, smoke and huge boulders in their way. Crashing into each other each time one person falls. Team Sting won this at first, but team Claw used their 'mystery' powerplay, swapping the two teams' times and therefore won.

Canopy Crawl( Joe VS Ayesha) - One person from each team will race head-to-head crawling across a zip-line. Team Sting won at first, but Team Claw used their powerplay 'repeat' and on the second time, Team Claw won.

Highway/Shadow Mountain (All 10 adventurers)- To win the teams must traverse the valley below the mountain on wires 20 metres above the forest floor. The teams must climb the 1500 metre mountain tied together while planting their flags as they go, the first team to summit and raise their final flag will escape and win. Team Claw won this as they had a huge time advantage and Kyran had breathing problems and Oscar hurt himself on the other team. Team Claw were awarded with a trip to an other tropical island where Caroline and Reggie where waiting with smoothies and mobile-phones so they could call their family before they started the long journey home.

Game

During the air, there was a simple game running on the BBC website. The website now is much more detailed and as a realistic game that you can play. This game, however. was called 'The Riddle of the Scorpion' where you only had to play simple games and answer the riddles.


Series 2 & 3

In July and August 2008, there were two more series filmed in Australia. Both series have got mixed reviews.

Reception

According to newspapers, Escape From Scorpion Island Series 1 got over 1.5 million viewers a episode which is a tremendous amount for a new show on the channel. There are Youtube accounts from the adventurers including Kryan Bishop, James Holder and Barbara Okrenta.


Canada

In January 2009, Scorpion Island Series 1 was shown on YTV Channel to Canada viewers. It got a huge response and there are many sites about the programme.
