Template:Chinese name Zhou Haibin (Chinese: 周海滨) (born on July 19, 1985) is a Chinese footballer who is a midfielder for Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven. He is a member of the China national football team.

Background

In October 1999 at 14 years of age, Zhou Haibin enrolled into the Shandong Luneng Soccer School[citation needed], and won the National A Championship and National U17 Youth Championship that year[citation needed]. He was called up to the China U16 Youth team in 2000, and won the National U17 Youth Championship again in 2001[1]. He broke into the Shandong Luneng first team in the second half of the 2002-2003 season, and has been a regular for the Shandong side ever since.

Position

Zhou Haibin is a defensive midfielder. He plays best in the center of the midfield as a defensive midfielder, but can also play on the right, or as a playmaker. Zhou's greatest asset is his composure with the ball and maturity on the field [2]. He broke into China's senior national team at only 21 years of age and represented his nation in the Asian Cup. He is described by PSV Eindhoven's technical manager Adrie van Kraay as a real "European player"[3].

Popularity

Zhou is somewhat of an idol in his native country China. Having emerged from their youth academy, Zhou has been a fan favorite for Shandong Luneng Taishan although some fans have shown discontent at the way he left the club for PSV Eindhoven. Zhou has often been touted as one of the best young talents in China, and a future star for the national squad.

Career

Shandong Luneng Taishan

He scored his first goal for the club in July 31, 2003 in a league game with Shenyang Jinde. He has featured regularly with Shandong Luneng Taishan since 2003 and is considered one of their star players.

In SLT Zhou totally got 21 goals as a defending midfielder ,18 in the league, one in the China FA Cup, one in the AFC Champions League and one in the A3 Champions Cup.

PSV Eindhoven

Zhou joined PSV Eindhoven in February 2009 on a free transfer from Shandong Luneng.[4] There were some issues however between PSV and the KNVB on one side and the Chinese Football Association, the latter having the right to hold released players for 30 more months.

On February 7, 2009, PSV Eindhoven officially confirmed the capture of Zhou Haibin on a free transfer on their official website. He signed a one year deal with an option for a further 2 and half year contract extension, and is available to play for PSV immediately.[5]

National Team

On June 1, 2004, he became the youngest player ever scored for the national team of China in a friendly with Hungary. The previous record holder was Sun Jihai.
