Thanks for your message. I would have responded to you right away, but I decided to address the problem first. Removing large chunks of content from Wikipedia is highly discouraged, which is why I felt comfortable reverting this on sight. However, as you said it is important to open a dialog with the user in question. I responded to Finnishing's message on the article's discussion page. I also left him a welcome message on his talk page, as I don't think he's a vandal and I didn't want him to feel bitten.
