Boi-1da

Matthew Samuels, better known as Boi-1da, is a Canadian hip-hop producer from Toronto, Ontario. He has produced for artists and groups such as Kardinal Offishall, Clipse, Drake, Saukrates, k-os, G-Unit, and The Diplomats among others. He is currently one of the most sought-after producers in Canada.[1]

Biography

Boi-1da grew up in the Silver Springs area of Scarborough, Toronto. At the age of eight, his mother bought him a Casio keyboard. By the age of 15, without any formal musical training, he started using the Fruity Loops beat-making program. A few years later, he won three consecutive "Battle of the Beatmakers" championships.

Boi-1da usually doesn't use samples in his productions; instead, he often incorporates an air horn sound effect into his productions (more commonly used in dancehall and reggae). He was influenced by producers such as Dr. Dre, Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, and The Neptunes. Previously, he used Fruity Loops 3.56 to make beats, but he has since upgraded to Fruity Loops 7 XL.[1]

In December 2008, Dr. Dre appeared on the remix of "Set It Off" by Kardinal Offishall, produced by Boi-1da.[2] In an interview with FLOW 93.5, Boi-1da revealed that he's working on Dr. Dre's highly-anticipated Detox album, to be released in 2009.[3]
