The 2002 Women's Rugby World Cup was the second World Cup fully sanctioned by the sports governing body the International Rugby Board (IRB). The tournament was held in Barcelona , Spain . 16 nations competed in a knockout competition, and each position was played out. After the first two rounds, the teams were re-seeded according to their points difference. The competition was won by defending champions, New Zealand .
