NERIST (North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology) is the premier technical institute for science and technology established by the government of India. It is located in the foot hills of the eastern Himalayan range, spread over valley of the Dikrong river , in Nirjuli (about 20kms from Itanagar, capital of Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh). NERIST is a deemed university since May'2005

History

In 1984, NERIST was set up as a technical institute for the seven sister states of the North East India to fulfill the need for higher education to boost the industrial development of India. Also the then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi hoped this will also satisfy the long demand of students from north eastern India for quality technical education. NERIST was to cater to students from these states for whom over 70% admissions were reserved.

Organisation

NERIST is looked after by a board of directors involving all the states in north east India and representative from Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The state governer of Arunchal Pradesh is de-facto head of board of director. THe board appoints a well known academic personality, generally from within north east India, to work as Director of NERIST. Each discipline has its head of department, generally the most senior of professor. In addition, there are head of each hostel, dean for student welfare, training and placement, security chief and medical officers.

Degrees

NERIST offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate degrees for six branches of engineering (namely - Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Agricultural Engineering )as well as applied science departement of forestry. The institute caters to about about 1500 undergraduate and 100 graduate/doctorate students. The Institute is modelled along the lines of modular system of education, an innovative curriculum to generate technical manpower at different levels. This involves students passing out after two, four or six years of studies with technical certificate, diploma or degree respctively.

Admission

NERIST conducts the NERIST Entrance Exam (NEE) to select students for their undergraduate programmes. The NEE is a tough science-oriented entrance exam, testing applicants knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. This examination is held at two levels - one for technical certificate and one for technical diploma or degree. 70% admissions are granted to students with domicile in north east India. Admission to postgraduate programmes is done through the all India level entrance examination GATE conducted by AICTE, the technical education board for India.

Student Life

A student or an alumnus of NERIST is informally known as an NERISTian. NERIST has six hostels for male and one hostel for female students. In addition to this two separate hostel for the postgraduate and doctorate students is in pipeline. There are a number of science clubs as well as regional associations whom most of the students are member of. An annual programme of fun, culture and dance takes place around October called Sonabyss involving many functions and competitions lasting four days. Football and Cricket are the two most popular sports among NERISTians.
