The Colorado Lottery is run by the government of Colorado. It is a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL).

The Colorado Lottery was started on January 24, 1983. Its first drawing took place on April 23, 1983. [citation needed]

As of July 2008, it offers three online games, including Cash 5 (5/32), Lotto and Powerball; it also sells scratch tickets. Colorado has offered fewer online games than most U.S. lotteries even though its lottery began in the early 1980s; Powerball was not available in Colorado until 2001. The Lottery has never offered a "traditional" Pick 3 numbers game; however, it is in the planning stage.

On March 18, 2009, it was reported that Colorado is looking into joining Mega Millions, if an agreement is reached allowing U.S. lotteries to sell Mega Millions and Powerball tickets from the same terminals. Powerball would remain in Colorado in any case.
