King Diamond (born Kim Bendix Petersen, June 14, 1956, Denmark) is a musician. This former football player's first band was Black Rose. In 1980, he formed Mercyful Fate, a group that to a large extent pioneered the genre of black metal because of the group's stage presence, make-up and occult lyrics, although its musical style is somewhere around heavy metal, power metal, and progressive metal. Diamond is renowned for his wide octave range, varying from low to a very high falsetto. On stage Diamond uses a trademark microphone stand consisting of two femur bones in the shape of an inverted cross. He also used to wear a makeup similar to that of Gene Simmons from Kiss. He was sued because of this and has since changed the design.

Diamond is known to be a member of the LaVey's Church of Satan.

King Diamond disbanded Mercyful Fate and took with him several of his bandmates to form his own solo band under his own name. Diamond had and still has a very succesful career. Mercyful Fate re-united in 1992, while the band King Diamond continued as well.
