The Coronas

The Coronas are an Irish four-piece rock-indie-alternative band from Terenure in Dublin. They have released two studio albums, Heroes or Ghosts (2007) and Tony Was An Ex-Con (2009). The first album contained hits such as Grace, Don't Wait, Heroes or Ghosts and the now renowned anthem San Diego Song.

History

Formation

The band formed when the members were just 15. The band was initially known as "kiros" according to the band's official biography on its website, but changed its name three years later to "Corona" (named after a typewriter brand), but when the Italian dance act Corona re-emerged, the band changed their name again to "The Coronas".[1]

Danny O'Reilly (son of Irish vocalist Mary Black), Conor and Graham hail from Terenure in Dublin, which is home to fellow Irish artists Republic of Loose and Rob Smith. Dave hails from Monkstown in Dublin.[1]

The song was later released as gaeilge, named "taibhsí nó laoich". The Coronas have appeared on RTE's Late Late Show, The Cafe and The Podge and Rodge Show, TV3's event guide, Channel 6's Popscene and radio shows, along with being interviewed on Youtube. The band won the Jack Daniels Set, showcasing new bands in 2006.[citation needed] In 2008 the Coronas were nominated for a Meteor Award, in the Best Irish Pop Act category. The award was won by Westlife, on February 15 2008. In 2009 they were nominated for two Meteors in the Best Pop and Best Live categories.
