Wordshaker is the second studio album by British girlgroup The Saturdays which was released on 12 October 2009 through Fascination Records.[1] It is the group's first album to feature at least one song that was co-written by them. The album peaked at #9 in the UK Albums Chart, which is the highest debut from the girls since they debuted at #11 with their first album.

The album's lead single, "Forever Is Over" was written by James Bourne and produced by The Runaways. It premiered on 23 August 2009 on BBC Radio 1's Switch and was fully released on 5 October 2009. [2]Ego is confirmed to be their second single with Wordshakeras the third.Rochelle Wisemansaid on her twitter page that One Shotwas going to be the fourth single from the album.

Background and production

The group started work on their second album in early March 2009 whilst the group performed their first headline shows, The Work Tour. Two songs from the recording sessions "One Shot" and "Wordshaker" were part of the setlist and will appear on the album. [3] The official cover was revealed in a special mailer to fans on the group's official form/website on 23 September 2009.[4]

The majority of the album (7 songs) were written/co-written by Norwegian songwriter Ina Wroldsen who has written previously for the group as well as working with The Pussycat Dolls, Pixie Lott and Leona Lewis.[5] Additionally the album features one song called "Deeper" which accredits every member of the group as a writer. Additionally it was revealed that the song "Forever Is Over" (later chosen to be the first single) was in fact written for Kelly Clarkson to record for her album. However during a visit to the record label's HQ The Saturdays heard the song and requested the song's writer James Bourne to let them record it instead.[6]

Promotion

The news section on the group's official website indicated that through September and October of 2009, the girls can be seen on many TV shows as they promote the album.[7].

On 26 September the group were interviewed on T4 where they introduced the music video for new single "Forever Is Over". Additionally on the 28 September the group appeared on daytime chatshow the Paul O'Grady Show for the first live performance of the single and an informal interview. They did the same on ITV1's daytime show This Morning on 6 October.[7] On 12 October they appeared on the new season of The Alan Titchmarsh Show for a chat and performance before a scheduled appearance at the Hollyoaks Music Festival on 17 October to perform "Forever Is Over" and the title song "Wordshaker".[7]

Critical reception

David Balls of Digital Spy said that "If anything, the girls are showing even more confidence this time around. 'One Shot' and 'Wordshaker', both of which combine grinding basslines with lethal pop hooks, make it quite clear that misbehaving boys will be punished. Then there's the cracking 'Ego', on which an over-confident male is calmly advised to "have a sit down with his ego". The album's obligatory smattering of ballads do go some way to warming the cockles. 'Here Standing', which has Christmas single written all over it, is a big powerful smacker of a love song topped off with massive stadium drums, while 'No One' and 'Denial' show the girls can be vulnerable as well as vixens. However '2am' is bog-standard girlband fodder and 'Deeper', the only track they co-wrote, suggests their songwriters needn't head down the job centre - but it hits the target more often that not. Though not quite as impressive as their debut, this is still a confident, fresh-sounding album."[8]
