Pokhara University (PU) was established in 1996 as Nepal's fifth University. The central office of the university is located in Pokhara, Kaski district, Western Development Region. Along with Purbanchal University, PU was formed as part of the government's policy to pursue a multi-university system for improved access to higher education. The Prime Minister is the Chancellor of the University and the Minister for Education is the Pro-Chancellor. The Vice Chancellor is the principal administrator of the university.

Teaching
Pokhara University has adopted a semester system. All Bachelors degrees are of four years (delivered over eight semesters) and Masters degrees are of two years (delivered over four semesters). M. Phil degree is of one and half years (three semesters). Ph. D. program is in process.
There are three faculties:
- Faculty of Sciences and Technology
- Faculty of Management
- Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
There are about 4,800 students enrolled across all programs. In the Fourth Convocation of Pokhara University (held on January 22, 2005), 792 students graduated. This number is expected to grow as the university intends to graduate 1,000 students each year.
