Urdu, also known as Fijian Urdu is taught in Fiji in all schools managed by the Fiji Muslim League. Urdu, as taught in Fiji, is based on standard Urdu as taught in the Indian Subcontinent. It is used alongside English by Indo-Fijian Muslims as an alternative to Hindi, which is taught in most Indo-Fijian schools based on the Devanagari script. Since Indo-Fijians of all religions use a vernacular based on Awadhi and Bhojpuri in everyday life, Urdu and Hindi serve as a link between Fiji and the Indian Subcontinent.
