The Biggest Loser: Second Chances is the eighth season of the NBC reality television series entitled The Biggest Loser.[1] The contestants are competing to win a $250,000 prize, which will be awarded to the finalist with the highest percentage of weight loss. This season premiered on NBC on Tuesday, September 15, 2009.[2]

This year's theme (second chances) means that each of the candidates has met with heartbreak and tragedy.[3] Among notable stories, Shay Sorrells grew up in foster care while her mother struggled with heroin addiction,[3] while Abby Rike lost her husband and children in a head-on collision caused by a speeding driver. Amanda Arlauskas became a contestant after winning a public vote against Erinn Egbert (who got at-home special assistant packages and made a cameo appearance in the week 12 episode) held during the Season 7 live finale. Contestant Daniel Wright was a contestant in Season 7, and has returned to "finish what [he] started".[4]

Another change to the format this year is that the two trainers will work with all contestants rather than splitting the contestants into two camps and creating an imagined competition between the two trainers. In the fifth week, when teams are changed to blue and black, Jillian leads black while Bob leads blue. [3]

Episode Summaries

Week 1

First aired September 15, 2009
Before arriving on the Biggest Loser Ranch, the contestants are given an immunity challenge: a footrace along the last mile of the Biggest Loser Marathon from Season 7. Daniel Wright is brought to the race separate from the other contestants and introduced as a surprise to them. Daniel wins the race, but Tracey and Mozziz ("Coach Mo") are hospitalized following the challenge. Tracey does not return until the second week, but Coach Mo returns mid-way through the first.[7] Back at the ranch, the contestants share their stories before picking teams. Daniel, winning the race, has first choice of teammates and chooses Shay as his partner, granting her immunity as well for the first week. The other contestants pick teammates in the order of finish; Tracey and Coach Mo are paired up because they were not chosen by another player.

The contestants then weigh in for the first time (with the exception of Coach Mo and Tracey). The weights are a shock to many, including trainers Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper. The initial weigh-in featured three Biggest Loser records: the most number of contestants having initial weights exceeding 400 pounds (five, four males and one female) and the heaviest female and heaviest contestant overall (Shay, weighing in at 476 pounds). The contestants visit several doctors, including Dr. Huizenga, who talks to them about their health, explaining their health problems in grim terms. He informs 29-year-old Sean that he has type II diabetes. The contestants then go through two workouts, with both Bob and Jillian working with all contestants, rather than dividing the gym.

At the second weigh-in, Coach Mo represents the Purple Team by himself and is the contestant with the second largest percentage of weight lost. The Black Team (Alexandra and Julio) fall below the yellow line; after the usual deliberations, the other teams choose to send Alexandra home from the ranch.

By the time this episode aired, Alexandra has lost 60 pounds. She plans to weigh 180 pounds at the finale. She also reveals that she had a crush on someone at the ranch, but won't tell who until the finale. It was revealed later (in Week 3) that she is dating fellow contestant Antoine.[8]

Week 2

First aired September 22, 2009

Alison offers the participants a challenge – if the group can lose a combined total of 150 pounds, then all of them can stay for at least one more week; otherwise, two of them will be eliminated. The challenge will be particularly difficult because 1) Tracey, although returning to the show, is medically limited from participating in most activities and 2) historically, the second week has been the most challenging, with contestants generally losing far less weight than in week one (and, at times, even gaining weight).

However, the group is given two challenges with rewards resulting in reductions in the weight to be lost:

  • First, after a nutrition demonstration from chef Curtis Stone, the group is required to answer a series of eight questions (one per team). If the group collectively answers five questions correctly, 15 pounds will be deducted from the 150 requirement.
  • Second, the group participates in a balance beam challenge. In an over-water setup similar to a baseball diamond, the group has to navigate across a series of ever-narrowing beams. The first platform (first base) gains an additional five pounds from the overall requirement; the second platform (second base) gains another five pounds; the third platform (third base) gains everyone the right to one phone call home, and the final platform (home) gains another 10 pounds.

The group successfully completes both challenges; thus, at the weigh-in the group only needs to lose 115 pounds (approximately 7.5 pounds per person).

At the weigh-in, the pink team (Amanda and Rebecca) start poorly, with only 10 pounds lost between them. However, the remaining members pick up the slack (Tracey loses 10 pounds in her first week despite her medical restrictions while Julio, the remaining black team member, loses 19 pounds, a six-pound improvement over the prior week, a surprise to Shay who was highly critical of his passive attitude toward the workouts). The result is that the group loses 155 pounds total (five more than the original goal). Thus, no one is eliminated in Week 2.

Week 3

First aired September 29, 2009

In a week about choices, the contestants are presented with a choice to take a two-pound advantage at the weigh-in in exchange for not working with the trainers. The first contestant to step over a line will get that exchange for his or her team. If no one takes the exchange, the amount of weight offered will go up until someone takes it. Tracey chooses to take the two-pound advantage out of a fear that one of the other contestants would jump over the line before her when the amount of weight offered was higher. Coach Mo looks shocked and reveals to the camera that he's unhappy about it.

Later, when Bob and Jillian arrive, they are angry, feeling Tracey gave up something that was worth more than just two pounds—time with the trainers is invaluable. Before setting off to train everyone else, Bob and Jillian sit Tracey down for a talk, and tell her to stop, think, and stare fear in the face without panicking.

A temptation challenge is presented to the contestants: whether to control their diets or control the game. Players are put into private booths and given small, 100-calorie cupcakes. For each team, only one player will weigh in for the entire team that week. The reward for the person who eats the most cupcakes in 10 minutes is to choose which player will represent each team at the weigh-in. Antoine eats one cupcake, causing Tracey to panic and start eating cupcakes when Ali announces that someone is winning. Tracey wins, having eaten four cupcakes. When Bob and Jillian find out, Jillian is furious and basically says she's done working with Tracey. She says she wants to go over there and throttle her.

For immunity, teams have to carry 500 pounds up a ramp, either by carrying two five-pound loads up at a time from a pile next to the ramp or by carrying a 25-pound load from a pile farther away. Tracey and Abby sit out due to injury, so the three contestants without teammates in the competition (Mo, Julio and Allen) each carry 250 pounds. Allen wins for the green team, but all players choose to finish their loads.

A few of the teams speak with Tracey in private to try to influence her decision of which teammate to choose to weigh in. Orange (Daniel and Shay), pink (Amanda and Rebecca), and brown all talk with her. She doesn't really give a clear view of what she will do, although she does agree with Daniel that "Shay has to be here." At the weigh-in, Jillian criticizes Tracey again, and chastises Mo silently accepting Tracey's decisions. As the teams weigh in, Tracey chooses the opposite of what the teams who confided in her told her they wanted. It affects the results for a couple teams, and Jillian comments to the camera that it's one of the nastiest examples of game play the show has ever seen. This puts the red and orange teams below the yellow line, with Tracy surprisingly losing 11 pounds, making her the biggest loser of the week (the Brown and Black teams would have been below the line had the "better" player from each team been chosen). Antoine and Sean appeal to the teams to send them home instead of the Orange team, saying that the Orange team (specifically Shay) needed to be on the ranch more and that the Red team has a great support system at home. The teams, though upset, respected their wishes, thus unanimously voting to send the Red team home.

By the time this episode aired, Sean has lost 120 pounds, and Antoine has lost 105 pounds. Antoine hopes to weigh less than 200 pounds by the time of the finale. This episode reveals that he is dating fellow contestant Alexandra, who was eliminated Week 1.

Week 4

First aired October 6, 2009

On the first morning of Week 4, Bob and Jillian meet with teams and hear how Antoine and Sean "fell on the sword". Jillian tries to encourage everyone to fight for themselves. Bob admits that "Shay needs to be here," but emphasizes that they ALL need to be here!

Everyone goes to the gym to train with Bob and Jillian except for Tracey. Tracey meets with Dr. H. She's waiting to hear that she is cleared to exercise, but he tells her that her CPK levels are up from 9000 to 17000. She has to stay off her feet this week. She freaks out wondering how she's going to lose weight. Mo comes to visit her and she tells him that he is going to have to "carry the weight for the team" (again).

Ali reveals that the kitchen has been locked down. They have to order out every single meal.

Challenge: there are three choices for dinner. Whichever team chooses the healthiest option will win groceries for a year. The teams are brought in individually to see the dinners.

Dinner A: 1/4 roasted chicken breast without skin (175). 1/2 cup low fat creamed spinach (80), 2.75 oz sweet potatoes (95), 1/2 cup nonfat peach frozen yogurt (100), and 2 cups unsweetened ice tea (0). (445)

Dinner B: 1/2 rotisserie chicken with skin, 1/2 cup creamed spinach, 1/2 cup vanilla frozen yogurt, 1/2 cup blueberries, and 2 cups green tea.

Dinner C: 1/4 BBQ chicken breast with skin, 1 cup brown rice, 1 cup peas and carrots, 1 cup mango slices, and 1 cup skim milk.

Each team has two minutes to ask Ali questions before making their choice. Many of the teams go with Dinner C, others select Dinner A. No team picks Dinner B. Dinner A is the correct choice. Brown, orange, and pink got it right, but they can't all win the groceries. They have to guess how many calories are in the meal without going over. Brown guesses 547, pink 385, and orange 475. Correct answer is 445 calories and pink wins. The teams also all get the Biggest Loser cookbook.

The teams look through menus and order food, giving instructions for how they want food prepared. It is infrequently prepared to order. Bob and Jillian visit and discover the restaurant challenge. They decide to take everyone out for dinner.

They go to a Mexican Restaurant. No one brings their calorie counting book. They return the chips and salsa to the kitchen. Some people send food back to get it done right. Bob and Jillian say the best ways to cook vegetables are steaming and roasting. Avoid anything sautéed or fried and order food grilled, baked, poached, or broiled. If the kitchen can't tell you how something is prepared, stay away.

Immunity Challenge: Each person will hold a handlebar while a platform over the water is inclined. Whoever holds on the longest wins immunity. Abby and Tracey sit out with injuries once again. Liz is the first in the water; Danny is second; brown is out. Amanda is next, followed by Rudy. Rebecca falls next and pink is out, and then Dina so blue is out. Shay is still hanging on – the last girl. Mo falls after about five minutes and purple is out, so only four teams are left. Shay falls at about ten minutes. Julio falls and is in third place, leaving Allen and Daniel. Allen looks much fitter than Daniel, and looks like he will win, but Allen says "See ya!" and falls in, so Daniel wins. Since Daniel won immunity. Daniel is also congratulated for meeting his goal and staying on longer than four weeks. Last season he was eliminated at Week 4.

Last chance workout: Bob and Jillian are "working to beat out some of the crappy food they've been eating all week." Jillian works with Rudy and he isn't doing what she wants him to do. She just rips into him and he says to the camera that he's not prepared mentally today. He appears to keep working despite struggles. Next is Bob working pink team – "Pink team has to work for every single pound they get!" Liz talks to the camera and says she feels like she might have gained weight this week. Julio looks like he's doing well.

Tracey is in the house not working out. Mo says he's working twice as hard to keep them there one more week. He looks like he's working hard and Julio says he's an old warrior. After one of the rotations, it appears that Mo may have overdone it and he cramps up. The medical staff comes in. Mo says he's "done".

Bob can see the pain, and Mo looks like he's trying to walk it out. Bob says it looks like Mo is panicking and that makes your injury feel worse. Bob says he has brought 20 years of pain with him and he's struggling. He tells Mo to rest for an hour and see if that will help and if he can then get back on a bike. Triumphant music plays as Mo reenters the gym saying that he wants to stay.

Going into the weigh in, everyone is anxious because of all the restaurant food. One team will be going home this week.

The weigh in starts with orange, since they have immunity. Daniel loses 0 pounds and is accused of planning it that way. Tracey says she's expecting to gain weight, but she loses 4 – even though she wasn't supposed to lose anything. Shay is angry that "another healthy team is going home" while Tracey get to stay when she's not even supposed to lose weight. Julio gets 4 pounds and says he "struggled mightily to get those four pounds ... it is what it is, Alison." At 1.09%, Julio will be below the yellow line for sure. Jill thinks that his results should have been higher, and she says something is not right – that if he makes it through elimination, it will be their mission to find out what's going on. Julio and brown team are below the yellow line. Two staying is better for the people than one, but at the same time getting rid of two competitors is better for the game than only removing one.

Mo says Julio is his closest friend in the house and made a deal to not write his name down, and Tracey says she made a deal with Liz. They were at a deadlock until the last minute; she says they had to make a decision and they both cried, but they voted for Julio. Julio is eliminated. He weighed 299 pounds at the time this episode aired.

Week 5

First aired October 13, 2009.

The show starts with a temptation which resembles "Wheel of Fortune" meeting "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory": spin a wheel (with 36 spaces) to win the "Golden Ticket" (which allows the winner to choose teams and trainers), win $1000, or eat 1000 calories. The contestants have to choose in or out: everyone except Abby goes in, but Tracey pauses to psyche the others out. Players spin in order of total weight lost so far, starting with Rudy. He gets a huge 1000 cal slice of chocolate cake and has to eat it before the next player spins. Then he goes back to the end of the line. Rebecca is next and gets a 280 cal chocolate donut. Allen then spins and gets a 100 cal cupcake. Danny gets a huge 780 cal cupcake. Tracey steps up and they start playing tense music – Mo says the wind started blowing and everyone felt something was coming. Amazingly, they were serious: she got the Golden Ticket. Everyone is shocked – gasps, groans, etc. Mo says it was "supernatural" – that she has the ability to gain control whenever she wants it.

Tracey is given time on her own to choose teams – no input from anyone else. Bob and Jillian show up to find out they're going blue vs. black, and they're a bit disgusted that Tracey is in control. She chooses Bob and says she has a "connection with Bob". Bob says "wow" and Jillian says there's no connection; she's just getting out of the ass whooping Jillian was going to give her. Daniel goes to black, Mo goes to blue, Shay goes to black. She says she "chose from the heart" and put Daniel and Shay together. Allen then goes to blue and Abby to black. Liz is starting to cry and Tracey picks her for blue. Ali asks if she's happy and she says "she needs her partner", and then Tracey puts Danny on black. Danny is pretty ticked. Rudy goes to blue(which is the color he and Dina had at the beginning of this season) and Amanda to black; Amanda starts to cry and says "Bob is more than a trainer to me." Bob says he doesn't want to pick favorites, but that he did have a connection with Amanda. The final picks are Rebecca for blue and Dina for black. Amanda and Rebecca start crying, and so does Tracey.

The players all basically say Tracey pissed everyone off, and it's now "World War III". Liz told Tracey it was important for her to stay with Danny, and she was "backed into a corner". Liz tells them she's going to backstab Tracey this week – she'll be so nice to her this week and cook, etc., but that she'll then send her home. Workouts start next as teams and Bob says the whole situation can be really stressful. Jillian says after all the drama she just wants to deliver a good beating. Amanda begins by stopping the treadmill while working with Jillian and says she's going to puke. Then she whines about Bob and ends up puking. Jillian actually checks to make sure she wasn't faking. Liz says she's killing herself this week to make sure she can send Tracey home. Then Liz faints while on a treadmill. After the commercial, they show medical staff treating Liz. Bob tells her she needs to have her head on straight and she says it is – that she's going to win immunity so she can send Tracey home.

Jillian is shown working out with Dina, with the step stool. Apparently Dina has a serious mental hangup with the stool – she's afraid. Jillian tells her it's time to write a new story, but she needs to let go of the old story of not being able to do things. "Either make your butt smaller, or jump on the platform and change your life. Quit wasting time." She walks out. Rudy talks to her to try and figure out what's going on and says she needs to save herself. He tells her to stop moping around and do it. He shows her a couple times and she jumps but not on the stool. He leaves and tells her to do it for herself. They show a camera view of her trying to jump on the stool… but not really.

Bob takes his team shopping after the commercial and tutors them on how to make a quick wrap. 3oz Jennie-O turkey breast, then free-for-all on vegetables.

Then the teams go to their first competition as blue and black. Ali: "Good players help themselves; great players help others." Each team races up a hill, splashes through mud, across a field, and to the finish. The catch is they'll be carrying a platform with one player sitting the whole race. The winning team gets videos from home. One again, Tracey and Abby sit out the challenge. They can also switch who's sitting on the platform, but someone has to be there the whole time. They start with Dina and Rebecca being carried. The path is narrow, so blue goes for the lead. Black stops because Shay is struggling while blue powers on. Blue stops for a rest before the mud and then goes through; black isn't even at the mud, and then Amanda loses her shoe in the mud. After the mud, Amanda hops on the platform so she can fix her shoe; Rebecca is happy to start carrying. There's a second mud pit and black appears to be catching up but has to stop and rest several times; Shay can't go any further so Amanda moves to the front so Shay doesn't have to work as hard. Daniel is struggling as well, and Shay is getting angry at him.

After the commercial, blue is shown finishing well ahead of the black team and they spin around to celebrate. Black finishes probably 60 seconds later and blue gets their videos from home. Rebecca gives her video to Dina and tells her she wants her to have a video. Dina cries and is extremely thankful. Then Rebecca tells her, "You better get on that platform!" Dina then tells her she can't take and that she has to get on the step on her own, but she's very thankful still. The blue players are shown watching their videos. Tracey's husband says he's sleeping on a couch because it wouldn't be fair to her for him to have a nice bed. "Pain is temporary; pride is forever! You go and win this." Liz asks Danny to come watch her video together; she wants to keep him "motivated". It turns out that Liz grabbed Danny's video instead, and he starts crying. Danny's wife says she's lost 20, her dad 26, and others as well are working at losing weight.

Last chance workout: Jillian works to help team form new bonds and trust. Bob takes his team to 24 Hour Fitness and conducts a group workout. Amanda says she feels better with Bob not visible. Tracey is walking on a treadmill and says she wants to be going faster, but that's all she can do. Mo has a hurt foot and is on a recumbent bike. Jillian says the last task for the black teams last chance workout is for them to "get Dina's ass on that platform!" She still can't do it, but Jillian says she'll get there so they go to grab a snack. Bob gives a trainer tip on doing wall pushup if normal pushups are too much, then move to a desk and then to a full pushup when you're ready.

At the weigh in, Tracey says she feels pressure because she was the one that chose teams. One of the blue members says looking around, there's no reason why blue should lose – their team is "stacked". The person on the losing team with the highest weight loss will be immune. The weighing starts with Tracey. Tracey tells the camera everyone needs to stop acting like kindergarten kids and act like adults. She then pulls a 7 pound loss. Mo is next and he says the week wasn't too good, but gets 6 pounds (he was apparently injured during the week). Allen is next and gets 7, but he says his goal is 8 or 10 each week. Rudy is next and he says he's pulled double digits every week so far, but he only gets an 8 this time. Bob is annoyed by his disappointment and says 8 is a great number, especially at this point in the game. Rebecca loses 7 and says she weighed that much when she was 14. Liz wraps up the blue team weigh-in; my guess about her throwing the weigh-in appears to have been wrong and she loses 8. That ends up making her the biggest loser on blue team, so she's immune if they lose (but it doesn't appear likely at this point). Blue ends up with a total loss of 2.56% and black will need to lose 46 pounds.

Abby starts and she tells the camera "we're ready"; she gets a 5. Dina is next and she says she is disappointed by the week and not getting on the platform; she loses 6. Amanda gets 6 pounds, and so far percentage wise black is right on target to match blue team. Danny goes next; only three players remain, but two are the biggest players. Danny loses 10 pounds, and he says he's also off all his meds so he's extremely happy with double digits this week. Daniel is next, but he lost nothing last week so he may pull a big number… he gets 11, leaving 8 pounds for Shay. The tension builds… Shay says she failed the last time she had to lose 8 and they went below the yellow line. Cut to commercial, and afterwards they show her losing 16. Everyone is super excited for her on black, along with some of blue. She says taking charge, coming together, forgetting the game play, and staying in control of yourself is what matters. Bob and Jillian say goodbye, and then Rebecca says Bob asked what would happen and she suggests Tracey. Ali confirms that Liz is the highest loss and is immune; Liz is very excited to get revenge. Rudy says they knew leaving the weigh in whom they planned to send home.

The team consults and they ask what they want to do. Tracey talks about how hard she's been working and that she has earned her spot. Rudy says that her staying may not be the best thing for the team. Mo says he feels bad that he's the lowest and that he should go – he doesn't want to benefit from someone else getting sent home. Rebecca tells the camera she's irritated about it, and Liz is ticked that Mo is "falling on the sword". Allen says Tracey is actually the stronger player, and he suggest they remove emotions to make the decisions. Rudy says he feels better with a coach than a Tracey. They appear split, and then they go to commercial.

Rudy tells the camera that they need to do what the best thing is for the team, even if Mo says he wants to go. Liz starts the voting; she says five weeks ago she wouldn't have written this name down, but now they need to stay together as a team. She writes down Mo. Rudy is next and also wrote down Mo. Tracey cries and says she can't believe she's writing down this name, but she also chose Mo. Rebecca finishes the voting off with Mo. He cries and says his goodbyes, but he appears to be looking forward to going home. After all, he asked them to send him home. He says he's excited to see his family and he won't be going back to where he was. "He's going to let everyone know it can be done at home."

Mo has now lost 76 pounds and he says that the Biggest Loser "saved his life". He talks about his group called "The Village" that he founded to help kids, and he focuses a lot more on exercise and nutrition. The final shot says Mo is working out every day with his student athletes and he hopes to lose 150 by the finale.

Week 6

First aired October 20, 2009.

The challenge has each team looking for four keys buried in the sand, which are all needed to unlock their team's box. The prize is kept a secret. The Blue team wins, and then the prize—a week at home—is revealed. They are also offered the chance to give the reward to the opposing team, which they choose to do in order to be able to work out with the trainers while the other team must struggle off campus. The episode description and preview last week already spoiled the surprise, however, as they said one of the teams gets to go home. Because of unbalanced teams, the black team needs to sit out one other player (along with Tracey and Abby), and Amanda volunteers. Each player is assigned a pile of sand to dig through, but they soon realize that they are digging several feet into the ground to find boxes containing their key. Rudy and Allen are the first to reach their boxes, though they can't help each other until their key is found. Once a player has found their key and removed their lock they can go help others. Danny is first to get his box out and remove his lock, and then he goes to help Daniel. Allen is next and helps Rudy who is close behind, putting blue in the lead. Danny helps Daniel finish and then each helps another teammate. Rudy and Allen help Liz, giving the blue team three keys found. Shay doesn't look like she's doing too well, and the blue team is getting close to finished. They get their final box out before the last two keys are found by the black team.

At home, the contestants struggle with their family responsibilities and their desire to eat healthy and work out at the gym. Shay is shown shopping for organic foods and other healthy options and Danny is keeping a food journal; Abby has a family potluck and Dina is shown jogging while her son bikes. Amanda hangs out with friends, and Daniel says they're at a real disadvantage. Danny goes to a gym to work out with his wife and says it's going to be a big distraction, but it's the only way he can spend more time with her. Abby is swimming and she's still struggling with her stress fracture; it's a 30 minute drive to a pool for her, but she makes it a priority. Daniel says that it's sort of expected for him to do well, since he's been home before. At home, Dina has difficulty with her son, since she now has to help out while her husband works. Amanda is shown at the gym and she looks lost and says that she does not know how to use the equipment. Shay feels uncomfortable at a gym with all the fit people looking at her like she doesn't belong. This footage is juxtaposed with footage of Bob working the Blue team really hard, with the Blue team responding enthusiastically to the training.

Bob takes the blue team to The Food Bank at their request as they were "inspired by the challenge last season." The director of the food bank states how many people in the United States are at risk for hunger (1 in 8). The Black team returns to the ranch and the last chance workout takes place. Jillian focuses particularly on Daniel, saying that he's been through two seasons and that he's just not showing the intensity as though there's something he's not telling her. Daniel cries during the workout and talks about how his mom was always trying to stop him from gaining weight, but he always saw it as her not loving him for who he was. Jill says that Daniel had an epiphany about his family dynamic and how it contributed to his weight.

The weigh-in begins. The Blue Team goes first and most of the team are disappointed in their losses. Rudy, however, is not, having lost 14 pounds, for a grand total of 87 pounds in 6 weeks. Ali says that if Rudy can lose 13 pounds at the next weigh-in, he will have lost 100 pounds faster than any other contestant in U.S. Biggest Loser history.

The Blue Team loses a total of 35 pounds, or 2.65% weight lost. The black team will need to have lost more than 45 pounds, a bit more than 7 pounds each, to beat them.

The Black team is disappointed with their losses, except for Danny, who loses 15 pounds. The team learns they've lost when Daniel is weighed and has gained a pound. He says being home was emotionally difficult, and assures his teammates that he didn't go home and slack off. Daniel feels like the one pound gain puts a target on his back. The black team ends up with 1.98% of weight loss and goes to the elimination room. Danny is immune from elimination as the biggest loser of the week.

The votes are split between Daniel and Dina, with Dina losing by one vote.

The crew visits Dina now. She says the person she was when she came to the ranch had zero confidence but she's beginning to see her potential. "I'm gonna win this battle. I'm going to look in the mirror one day and see the Dina that's been hiding." They show her update and she weighs 188 pounds, having lost 65 pounds. She has now made working out more of a family affair. She goes to get a makeover in an effort to help let go of her past. She comes out with new clothes and a different hairdo to the cheers of her family. It is revealed that she recently completed her first half marathon and hopes to complete a full marathon.

Week 7

First aired October 27, 2009 Week 7

Rudy discusses the elimination of Dina; Rudy and Liz were friends with Dina and are a bit upset. Since Danny had immunity, the other three friends (Amanda, Shay, and Daniel) voted for Dina. Liz is very irritated about their "fake sympathy". The players then meet with Ali. This is going to be head-to-head week. There are five match-ups and whichever team gets three (or more) match-up wins is safe. The team to win a challenge chooses the matches. For the competition, they need to bob under a bar and jump to touch a medallion to get 500 touches; only one person is active at a time, and they can switch whenever they want, but each player only gets one try.

In the challenge, blue is very confident they'll win. Abby pulls out after only 20 touches against Tracey. Shay is next. Shay gets to 100 while Tracey is at 97, and Danny comes in at 104. Tracey trades for Allen at 100. Allen is closing the gap and takes the lead at 131. Amanda comes in at 220 and black is 15 down. Liz comes in for blue at 250. Liz falls after just a few touches but gets back up. Liz can see she's losing ground so she pulls out after only 20 or so touches and Rudy comes in. Amanda is doing very well and closes gap to only 3. At 350 (down by 2), Amanda tags Daniel. At 390, Rebecca comes in for blue and black is only down by 1. It's going to be Rebecca and Daniel to the finish. They get tied up at 417. Daniel feels like he let team down at the last weigh-in and he wants to win, but Rebecca is starting to regain the lead and is up by 3 by 450. Blue ends up winning at 500 to 496 and gets to decide the pairings. Daniel is frustrated, but he doesn't realize he did ~50% more touches than any other player on his team. Blue gets 10 minutes to hear the face offs.

Rebecca goes up against Amanda, her former Pink teammate. Tracey chooses to square off against Abby. Allen pairs off against Danny. Rudy chooses Shay, which he thinks is almost a guaranteed win. He's the highest loss so far and she's one of the lowest. That leaves Liz and Daniel. The tables are really stacked, since Danny and Abby are the only people who have lost more than 15% on black while blue has four people above 15% and Liz is just below.

Bob takes the team to the pool, while Jillian works in the gym. Amanda is struggling on the treadmill and not doing what Jillian asks; Jillian says she's trying to push them out of their comfort zone so it's uncomfortable and she can help them learn to deal with difficult situations. Amanda says she can't deal with the pressure anymore and has a breakdown, and ends up leaving the gym.

The players have a challenge at a baseball stadium. They're all in baseball uniforms. To help explain the challenge, Derek Jeter is on the big stadium TV. He encourages several of the players by name (Daniel), and tells black team to step it up. The teams need to work as a team. On the field are 2535 balls, one for each hit Jeter had in his first 13 seasons. The players can throw balls at any target; when a target is hit 316 (Jeter's career batting average) times, they're out. The winning team gets Curtis Stone to cook lunch for the entire team, plus a 2 pound advantage at the weigh-in. They can split it up 1 pound to two players, or 2 pounds to one person. Abby is out for medical reasons, and Tracey sits out for Blue.

Black team targets Allen first, then Rebecca. Blue is split between Amanda and Daniel. Amanda is next out, and then Rebecca is knocked out. Daniel is next out, but then Rudy is knocked out, giving black a 2 to 1 advantage. Eventually Liz is out, and Black wins their first challenge with Danny and Shay still active. Black is feeling excited and blue is a bit nervous. Curtis Stone does a backyard BBQ using Jennie-O turkey burgers and Portobello mushrooms in place of buns. with only 280 calories.

Jillian talks to Abby and she says how she's learning to live and love again. Losing everything she loved was her worst nightmare. She talks about what exactly happene She wasn't feeling well and went to the emergency room to get checked out. She kissed her daughter one last time and that was the last she saw her. They were killed about 5 miles from her home by a guy going over 100 mph. She was supposed to have been with them and is apparently feeling some guilt. "I'm going to live and not just exist anymore." Jillian is touched and says she isn't sure she could have handled what happened to Abby. Abby says going home last week and playing with her niece was the first time in a long time where she was living with her family again and not just being present.

Amanda talks to Jillian about walking out of the gym. She has difficulty being in a leader role and not just being the fat girl in the back. Jillian says she needs to redefine failure; it's not failing, it's a learning process. Bob does last chance workout, starting with Allen. He's doing jumps to stools, and gets up to a 3-foot platform. After a bit of psyching himself up, he does it. Bob works Amanda and Rebecca, who are facing off, together on exercise bikes. Jillian talks with Shay about how it was being the daughter of a heroin user. Then Shay admits, "I couldn't make her love me!" Jillian tells her she needs to forgive herself and stop blaming herself for not saving her mom.

The weigh-in starts. The two pound advantage is given to Amanda, and she starts the weigh-in against Rebecca. She lost 4 pounds, while Rebecca loses 9 pounds to score one point. Abby and Tracey are next. Abby loses just 3 pounds and is "dumbfounded" for just 1.47%. Tracey needs to lose 3 pounds or more and gets… a commercial! Oh, wait… she loses 5 pounds, again easily beating black, and she's out of the 200s. Are they just building up to a big "comeback" for black, or are they done? Danny and Allen are next, and Danny wants a double digit number. Danny loses 12 pounds for a loss of 3.36%; Allen will need 10 pounds to beat him. Allen loses 8 pounds, so black has their first point. Liz and Daniel are next; Daniel is "confident, as I gained a pound last week." Daniel only loses 5 – he was apparently hoping for 10 or more. Liz only needs to lose 5 pounds to win (4 pounds would lose by 0.06%). Liz pulls 7 and blue wins the match-up. Black looks dumbfounded and irritated with their performance; Shay and Rudy go up for the final match-up. Shay needs 14 in order to be immune. She ends up at 402 with a 9 pound loss, so Danny is immune and safe. Rudy needs to lose 13 pounds to get to 100 pounds in seven weeks to beat Dane. He says, "I really want to beat that record!" They bring in Dane for the weigh-in as a surprise, and he continues to be very fit. He's doing a triathlon the next day, along with 12 other former BL contestants! After all the buildup, Rudy loses… 14 pounds! He breaks the record and loses 101 pounds in seven weeks.

With Danny being immune, Abby looks like she thinks she's going home. Liz tells the camera, "There will be some REAL tears in that elimination room this week, as they'll need to send one of their own home!" Black team has a discussion, and Abby pretty much says her journey was to learn to love again – she essentially volunteers to go home. Danny tells her to fight for herself, but she has already volunteered. Daniel appears to be contemplating asking to go instead, as he has had two chances already but Abby is still learning. Prior to the final segment, the lead-in to the commercial says, "See how the eliminated players look today!"

Abby is still saying it's her time to go, but Danny appears to want to send home Daniel. The voting begins with Abby; she says, "I wrote someone's name down that I didn't think would receive any other votes: Amanda." Shay cries and says how much she's learned from Abby. "Every time I see you, I see the mom I wanted and didn't have!" She votes for Abby, since she asked to go. Amanda says she wasn't sure who to send home, but "she is a strong individual." Abby has 2 votes. Danny is next; he says "one person is further along than everyone else, and that's why I voted for Daniel." Daniel finishes the voting, "She asked me earlier that if she said it was time, please respect my wishes and send me home." So he votes for her as well. Abby talks a bit more about her family and dreams with her husband, and how "I'm having new dreams again." She hugs everyone and then leaves.

Abby tells the camera, "The next chapter of my life is yet to be seen… I'm ready to fly again." Abby started at 247 and leaves the ranch at 201 pounds. "When I came, I was at the lowest point in my life; I was broken and I knew something had to change." At her homecoming, there's a big party in her home town for her, with over a hundred people chanting "Abby, Abby!" She lost her family 2.5 years ago, "and I'm sure you felt at times that you lost me too. But I'm back!" Abby is doing motivational speaking now, telling people "today is your second chance to choose differently!" She also mentions that the man that killed her family also died in the accident. Abby has lost a total of 80 pounds since starting – making her weight as of this airing 167 pounds. 34 pounds since going home. Prior to the disclaimer credit, the episode is dedicated in the memory of her deceased husband (Rick) and children (Macy and Caleb).

As a teaser to next week, they're going to D.C. and the White House. Tracey tells the camera, "The choices I made earlier are coming back to bite me!"

Week 8

First aired November 3, 2009

The mission for the next week is for them to do everything they can to help Americans live healthier, happier lives. "If you want to make a change in this country, what's the best place to do it? That's right: you're going to Washington, D.C." They give a JetBlue advertisement for their flight, and the players are all excited to be able to fly without seatbelt extenders. They meet up at the Jefferson Memorial. Bob and Jillian are there as well, and the contestants get to speak to Congressmen and visit the White House. Ali also tells them that, "Jefferson wanted to preserve our rights as individuals, which is appropriate… since we're going to singles."

Pop Challenge: Bob and Jillian are going to do a public workout at the Washington Memorial, and whoever gets the most people from the streets to come participate (in one hour) wins "a huge advantage." The winner team also gets Subway for everyone in their group. Tracey starts stealing people from other teams! Amanda loses her whole group when they find out Daniel is on the show again this season. Allen gets the firemen to help him and they show up at the workout. There are hundreds (possibly more than a thousand) people at the workout. The final difference between first and second is one person: between Liz and Allen. Amazingly, Liz wins. Of course, the irony is that virtually all of the people at the workout aren't even obese. Jillian "gets to abuse total strangers" while Bob coordinates from the stage. The next day the contestants go meet and talk with two Senators (Kirsten Gillibrand and Bob Casey, Jr., both of whom serve on the Subcommittee on Hunger, Nutrition and Family Farms) about the issue of obesity among youth and children. They tell their stories about how they got to where they are and what might help.

Next up is a challenge. There are four monuments and the contestants will be visiting each one. The winner of the challenge gets immunity. The first challenge is to run one mile (two laps) around Constitution Gardens Lake. Tracey seems a little freaked out thinking back to the first day. For winning the pop challenge, Liz gets a ticket to skip one of the challenge stages, but she can't skip the last one. The bottom three finishers in each stage are out. Rebecca and Allen are in the lead, followed by Rudy, Daniel, and Amanda. Tracey, Shay, and Danny are at the back, with Liz just ahead of Danny. Inspirational music plays while they show Shay power walking the mile, with flashbacks to the beach for the other contestants. Rebecca wins, followed by Daniel and Allen, Amanda, Rudy, and finally Liz. Danny is seventh, then Tracey and last is Shay. Tracey appears happy just to complete the first stage… odd that the lightest person came in second to last.

The second stage is at the Lincoln Memorial on the Watergate Steps. There are piles of 17954 pennies for each contestant – the amount of pounds lost to date on the Biggest Loser. Each player has to race down the steps, gather as many pennies as they can, then back to their bank (a clear tube with a mark). The first four to reach their mark move on; Liz chooses to sit out this stage. Rudy looks to be carrying the most pennies because of his huge "banana hands" (as Daniel puts it). Rebecca and Amanda are in the back, and it appears they aren't allowed to use their shirts to carry pennies. Rudy finishes first by a large margin. Daniel takes the second spot and the final spot is a fight between Rebecca and Allen; they start scooping up dropped coins near the base of the banks to race to the finish. Rebecca barely wins over Allen.

Trainer tip: exercise on vacation using stairs; 20–30 minutes is cardio. Do side squats and pushups for strength training. The third part of the challenge is in front of the capitol building; "the key to success is balance". The players need to balance on a platform on a narrow 2" brick while holding a Pilates ball. The last two standing move on to the final challenge. Daniel is wobbly from the start, as is Rudy, but they do stay up for a while. Daniel is first out and Rudy looks wobbly but recovers, and then Liz falls and is out. The final challenge is at the White House, and they have a step in front of them. The first to take 206 steps wins… for the past 206 contestants on the Biggest Loser. They start off neck and neck, but by 50 Rebecca is leading by 3 and it grows to 8 by 70. Rebecca is up 100 to 90, then 175 to 144. Pretty much Rebecca kills Rudy and wins immunity.

With the move back to singles, Bob is "focusing on Amanda" and helping her to stay on track. Right. He then gives a plug for Extra Gum. The contestants then get to go through a tour of the White House. They meet the White House chef for the tour. The Obamas actually are the first people in the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt to have a garden, and they eat fresh vegetables most meals, apparently. They get to eat lunch in the White House kitchen, helping to prepare the food.

Last chance workout begins. Jillian is excited because she gets to work out and "torture" everyone. Bob is really concerned for the weight loss while on vacation and pushes hard. Jillian gets to work with Tracey again and tells her to "stop playing games and do it the right way!" She really doesn't like Tracey and her game playing and works to get through to her and help her change her life, not just winning. Be visibly different inside and out – control what happens by controlling yourself. Jillian says, "Finally Tracey has had a breakthrough." We'll see. Bob wants to get Shay under 400 this week (she better, considering she's only 3 pounds away). Amanda gives her story to Bob about walking out of the gym last week. Then Bob has her go "9.5 for one minute" on the treadmill and she does it, so the problem looks to be partly her connection, or lack thereof, with Jillian.

Weigh in begins at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Rebecca is first with immunity; she loses 4 pounds. Shay goes next looking to break 400; for 2% she'll need 8 pounds, so she really needs bigger numbers. She gets a 9 pounds loss – 83 pounds in eight weeks. "I am not 400 pounds anymore!" Tracey is next and loses only 3 pounds. Daniel is next and has a big double-digit week of 11 pounds; he's only seven pounds away from losing 200 pounds since starting. Allen is next (after the commercial break): he loses 9 pounds. Danny is next; he needs 8 pounds to be safe and loses 12. Rudy is next, needing 8 pounds to be safe; he loses 9 pounds. He's a bit disappointed for not getting a double digit this week. Liz is feeling very worried for not getting enough exercise this week; she needs 5 pounds and loses 3, putting her up for elimination. We wrap up weighing with Amanda, who needs 4 pounds to be safe (after the commercial). She gets 7 pounds – her biggest loss to date. The vote is going to be between Liz and Tracey. She cries to the camera, "I didn't do enough and I'm angry with myself."

Liz has her say but doesn't really seem to fight for it. Shay is disappointed and seems to be willing to vote Liz off. Then Tracey has her say and Daniel asks her about her desire to win versus her desire to be healthy. She says she needs to be there for health, but the contestants look dubious. Really there's no indication of what people are going to vote. Tracey talks to the camera and acknowledges her gaming earlier, wondering if they'll get rid of her for it. Amanda starts the voting; "We came in here with a close bond and said she would never betray me; then she did it twice and that's why I'm voting for Tracey." Shay votes for Liz "because I want to see people fight to be here." Danny says "it's an obvious vote for me; I could never write Liz's name down so I voted for Tracey." Daniel says he likes both of them, and that "Tracey has had enough time here to take what she's learned home." Rebecca says that she just doesn't know what this person is going to do, and this other person needs to be here to break down some of her barriers, which is why I voted for Tracey. Tracey smiles and says she felt she had to play the game to stay and seems content with the past.

Tracey tells the camera that it has been an amazing experience and she's come so far from the start. She "did what I had to do to stay here; I played the game and no one likes that." "I may have struggled to run a mile this week, but the next time you see me I'll look like I've run a thousand miles!" She gets off the plane and there's a helicopter waiting to her home town. The last time in a helicopter was when she was taken to the hospital. She says that was the old Tracey who is dead and buried, and this is the new Tracey. Her husband and kids cry when they hug her. They show her at the several month update with a recap of her collapsing after the mile run. Today she's running a mile on the beach again and "it won't defeat me!" Her attitude and appearance are a lot better, and she does the mile without difficulty in 11:22.18. She has lost 41 pounds since going home (85 pounds total).

The teaser for next week says that two people will be going home (Double Elimination), and there's a lot of crying. They show both Rebecca and Shay crying and Jillian saying, "She's not ready to go home yet."

Week 9

First aired November 10, 2009

Ali reveals to the contestants that two people will be going home, but there's a second twist. In addition to the yellow line, there will also be a red line. Whoever falls below the red line will be automatically eliminated and sent home prior to the voting. After that, the remaining two lowest will be up for elimination. After this revelation, there's a pop challenge for a 1 pound advantage. Each player has 50 tennis balls on a wall, and they need to jump up, grab one, run to their bucket and drop it in. Liz and Amanda sit out the challenge because of injury. Allen is in the lead followed by Rebecca, Rudy, and Daniel. Allen and Rebecca are neck and neck at the end, with Allen leading by just a few seconds.

Rebecca and Amanda say that the best option would be for Liz to be below the red line. They feel the older and younger generations have separated. Danny and Liz reiterate that there appears to be a generational split. Danny is on Liz to make sure she pushes through the pain and doesn't fall below the red line. Bob and Jillian hear about the challenge. They're shocked by the red line twist. Bob and Jillian take a minute to discuss things separately. Jillian says that Shay needs to be there no matter what. Bob agrees but says he can't "play god" and determine who needs to go. The trainers conclude that they will still work to help everyone, but Jillian says they need to "pull out all their tricks" to try to save Shay.

Rudy and Bob talk as they head to the gym. Rudy is apparently struggling with some pain and is worried about being on the treadmill, but Bob tells him he needs to do whatever he can to be safe. Then Jillian is shown working a group on the treadmill, and Danny has some pain in his hip and can't continue to run. As the exercising continues, Danny and Liz are both having difficulties; everyone appears to be working extra hard with the fear of the red line. Jillian then sends Danny out of the workout room because he's "a mess" and is in so much pain. Jillian is working Shay on the stairs and she's struggling through the pain. Then she screams at her while she's doing plank position: "Stop crying and pull it together! Get into plank and hold it for ten seconds." She tells her to be strong and "no more tears, no falling down, no drama – do everything I say and do it perfect!" Jillian appears to be focusing on Shay throughout the episode. Bob's trainer tip: one way to cut calories is to not drink them; how many servings are in a fruit juice: 2.5, with 30-40g of sugar per serving – substantially more than a single can of soda.

The older group is shown discussing possibilities. Their "best-case" is for all of them to stay above both lines. Jillian is working with Rebecca and tells the camera how the workouts are going to be "all day long, not just six hours." Rebecca won't do any more work: "it's too much, I can't do it anymore!" Rebecca says "too much" again and walks away from the treadmill. Jillian says that Rebecca has this all or nothing mentality – either she needs to win it all or she quits. After walking out, Rebecca talks with Amanda about how she struggles every day to not quit. Danny and Bob then have a talk, and he shows some of his old pictures to Bob – of high school football and in his band. Danny says he's feeling confident for the first time in a long time. Then Jillian talks with Shay and Rebecca and plugs 24-Hour fitness and their new "friend" program.

After the break, a challenge takes place at the Ringling Brothers-Barnum and Bailey circus. The contestants will jump through hoops. Each time a person goes through another contestant's hoop, that player gets a point, and you're out at 100. Allen is irritated because he feels it's going to be like the baseball challenge. Alison reveals that they're playing for immunity. Rudy and Shay appear to have an alliance at the start. All of the youth start by targeting Liz; they want "someone that could fall below the line" to not have immunity. Allen tells Danny to work on Amanda, while Liz goes after Shay. Shay appears to hurt herself going through the hoop. Liz is the first to be eliminated from the challenge. Amanda is next, followed by Daniel and Allen. Rudy has 0 still, and Rebecca, Danny, Rudy, and Shay are getting points. Rebecca is next out, and Rudy then starts going through Shay's hoop, which annoys Shay because he's going through her hoop instead of Danny's hoop. Shay starts crying and Rudy puts Shay out. The last two are Danny and Rudy, but Danny is already at 77 so it's over. Rudy wins immunity. Daniel and Rebecca move spin bikes into Shay's room so that they can exercise while the other team thinks they're sleeping/resting.

Bob shows up after the challenge and hears about Rudy's immunity. He says that he's going to be the only one there for the day – no word about Jillian. He asks for a recap of the challenge and Shay says she "doesn't want to talk about it." The tension level is clearly high in the room. Bob takes the group out to do a trapeze workout. He also takes a minute to give a "Larabar" to Danny and Liz for a quick paid advertisement. They go to "Jukari" for the workout, where they use their own weight as resistance in a variety of running, pull-up, and push-up exercises. Bob takes a minute to tell Shay that "we're not supposed to say how much people need to be here, but you need to be here!" When they get back to the ranch, it turns out that Jillian isn't really gone for the day. She welcomes the contestants and tells them that it's now time for their REAL last chance workout.

At the weigh-in, Rudy loses 8 pounds. Shay is next up and is "terrified". Ali points out that Kristin lost 100 pounds in 12 weeks, the fastest ever for a woman on the Biggest Loser, and Shay is 17 pounds away at just 9 weeks. After the break, she weighs in and loses… 17 pounds. She is now the biggest person ever on TBL and the fastest woman to lose 100 pounds. Amanda is next, and she loses 5 pounds. Rebecca loses 10 pounds, beating Shay and coming close to Amanda's weight despite starting out 29 pounds heavier. Danny is next, and he is near the 100 pound mark. He needs 16 pounds to be safe (i.e. above Shay). He gets (commercial)… 17 pounds! That also puts him in the 100 pound club. Allen is next, and he says that the 1 pound advantage is now feeling a lot smaller. He needs to lose 11 pounds to be safe and gets 10. He's happy for the double digits but is a bit nervous as he's only above Amanda and Shay (barely). Liz says that this has been the toughest week to date with the stress. She needs 10 pounds to be safe and she loses 12. That puts her into first place, and it's her highest loss in any week to date. Shay is now below the yellow line, and Daniel is the last person left. Either Amanda or Daniel is going to be below the red line. Daniel needs 7 pounds to be above the red line and 12 pounds to be safe. Daniel loses 5 pounds and he's gone. Rebecca starts crying, along with Amanda and Shay. He says he's proud of how far he has come and he's going to keep it up at home. He ends his second season at just two pounds shy of losing 200 pounds since last season. He says next time we see him, he will "be done with losing weight for the first time in my life!" Bob and Jillian say goodbye.

Shay says, "I'm not saying keep me here to win; keep me here to save my life. If you're going to keep someone here, you may as well keep the person that still has 200 pounds to lose!" Amanda pleads for her position as well, saying she fought to get on the show and has fought to stay there. Rebecca starts the voting and says that she can't write down Amanda's name, so she votes for Shay. Allen is next and he also votes for Shay, saying she has "grasped what she needs to do." Danny says that the longer road needs more time on the ranch, and he votes for Amanda. Liz says she's "shocked" at her own vote, but that she chose to play the game this week. She votes for Amanda. Rudy is the deciding vote. He says, "Setting goals for yourself is so important – it will get you through the ranch and through life." He votes for Shay, sending her home. Shay says she kept her integrity, she set a record, and she made a lot of progress, and she's walking out with all of that. "I have a life ahead of me now!"

Daniel and Shay have their homecomings with lots of friends and family there. Everyone at Shay's house is happy to hear of her success. She says the highest weight loss on TBL ever is 212 pounds, so she wants to lose at least 213 pounds by December. Daniel has lost 198 pounds total so far and still hopes to fulfill his goal of losing the most total weight of any contestant. He says, "winning the show wasn't the goal; making the decision to change was winning." At the check in, Daniel is down to 239 pounds. He visits David, his friend from last season, who has gained back most of the weight he lost on the previous season and does not plan to change. Daniel also has a girlfriend that he hopes to introduce to America at the finale (suspected to be Rebecca). Shay is not shown, but she appears on the Jay Leno show later in the evening, where she looks like she has done very well and reveals that after five months she's at 322 pounds, she lost 154 pounds so far. Daniel says he has "lost about 230 pounds" since starting, which means he's at 224 now. However, Shay's transformation video can be viewed on the official website.

Week 10

First aired November 17, 2009
90 minute episode

The contestants are going to give speeches this week to motivate and inspire others, and in preparation of the speeches the contestants are having makeovers with Tim Gunn and Tabatha Coffey. Welcome to makeover week. They start with Tim and talk clothes. Liz says she wants clothes to make her look fabulous and it's worth it to take time out for yourself. Rudy doesn't seem to care much about the clothes; he's a jeans and t-shirt guy. Rudy also seems to like his beard and just thinks it's "too long". He tells Tabatha that "the beard has to save". She's having none of it.

Rebecca starts the speeches, to a crowd of 300 people, but first there's one last surprise from Tim: her sister is there. Rebecca has a short haircut and black dress. Danny is next up for the family reunion, and he's wearing an argyle sweater over a flower shirt. Umm… what were they thinking? In contrast, Allen comes out in a nice suit and looks great – you can't go wrong with a suit. His wife and kids are also there. Amanda is sporting a blue blouse and also looks good; she's greeted by her mom. Rudy did end up losing the beard and is wearing a sport blazer. His wife and two daughters are there to greet him. Liz wraps things up, with a some sort of animal print dress. Her husband and daughter are there for her.

At this point, the speeches begin. They show clips of Allen talking about being a firefighter, Danny talking about how his daughter "wants a belly just like you", Rudy discusses losing his big sister (his role model) to cancer when he was fifteen. This revelation from Rudy is a surprise to Jillian and Bob – "how did he keep this a secret!?" Amanda talks about being overweight and held back from many opportunities; Rebecca says she was overweight since 10, being the chubby sister, friend, etc. Liz says she blamed her weight on everything but herself – "the dryer shrunk my shirt/pants!" She also says she watched all of the past Biggest Loser episodes, eating ice cream while watching the weigh-in and saying, "that's it – I'm going to stop!"

The challenge this week is a repeat from a previous season: they have wires crossing a chasm with pictures of their "old selves" on the other side. The contestants will need to cross on the wire using a pulley to cross the 700 feet at a height of 200 feet. The winner of the challenge wins a 2-week trip to the new Biggest Loser resort in St. George, Utah. Liz seems the most concerned with the height aspect; Danny starts laughing about her "hootin' and hollerin'"! They're sitting in a chair this year, strapped in. Rudy starts sliding right at the start and is out to an early lead, followed by Amanda. The others don't seem to get the "slide" at the beginning. As they start the uphill stretch, Amanda is closing the lead, but Rudy still ends up winning (his second win in a row). Rebecca is third, then Allen and Danny. Liz is the last to finish, but she's happy to have completed the challenge. At the end they get to cover their old pictures with new pictures from the makeover.

After the challenge, Bob and Jillian tell them it's time for the last chance workout. Bob hold Allen back to find out why he isn't winning challenges. Allen admits he's playing the game – letting others win in order to make himself less of a threat. It's also a chance for a Ziploc advertisement and plug for the environment. Jillian says they "need to fit a whole week's worth of training into one day" and so they begin the beatings. Jillian asks why he didn't say anything about his sister dying and is a bit pissed. Jillian continues the questioning until they end at, "Why were you 442 pounds?" He responds: "Because I suck in every problem and leave it there." He says he then eats. Jillian feels like it's the first glimpse of real breakthrough they've had with Rudy.

The weigh in begins, and there's no immunity tonight. The six remaining contestants having lost nearly 600 pounds combined. Danny starts, with a streak of five weeks running with double-digit losses. Danny pulls it off with a 12 pound loss – six weeks in a row! He has now lost 126 pounds – "a whole Jillian Michaels!" Rudy is next up and he loses a whopping 16 pounds – almost 5%. Rudy has a chance to set a Biggest Loser record next week. Allen expresses concern since it was makeover week; he'd need 13 pounds to get ahead of Rudy and be safe (or 10 pounds to beat Danny). He gets 5 pounds and is disappointed, but Jillian points out that a 5 pound loss after a 10 with him only weighing 238 is great. Bob says they don't want Allen going crazy to lose the weight in an unhealthy way. Rebecca is up next, and she's 9 pounds away from 200 pounds – a weight she hasn't seen since high school. She needs 8 pounds to be safe at this point; she loses just 3 pounds and starts crying. "It sucks, but I still weigh 206 pounds." Danny and Rudy are now safe. Liz steps up to the scale and is nervous considering what Rebecca managed. She needs 5 pounds to guarantee her safety; she loses 3 pounds as well. She says her goal when she started was to get under 200, and she's getting there. Rebecca is now up for elimination and Allen is now safe. Amanda is last and she only needs 3 pounds to be safe (which would also put her under 200). She drops a whopping 9 pounds, which puts her in second for the week behind Rudy. She's ecstatic as 9 pounds is her biggest loss on campus. The elimination is going to be between Liz and Rebecca.

The elimination discussions start with Liz, and she tells them that they need to decide who will push them the most. Rebecca asks to talk to Rudy and Allen, as she feels Danny is a foregone conclusion. Allen tells her she needs to fight and walks away. Meanwhile Danny tells Liz that how she presents herself is going to make a difference. Rebecca then tells Allen and Rudy that she hasn't been below the yellow line yet and Liz has been there three times already – she wants her second chance. Liz tells them that she's old and this is her last chance – that Rebecca has a lot longer left.

At the voting, Ali tells them that with four voting, in the event of a tie the lower weight loss is going home, and that's Rebecca. Amanda starts and says that she can't vote against Rebecca, and Danny is next saying he could never write down Liz. Rudy says it's a matter of trust, in that Rebecca tried to play both sides when it was blue vs. black. Since she's the lower loss, she's gone. Rudy says that he doesn't trust her because she talked with black team. Rebecca cries and Rudy is blaming and argumentative. She hugs Amanda and tells her to "beat all these big boys".

Rebecca goes home and everyone cries and is happy to see her and proud of her accomplishments. She starts cleaning out her closet with her sister. "I had a makeover of my body, and now I get to makeover my clothes!" In the update, she says she took 16 minutes to run one mile on the first day and now she's about to run a half marathon. She looks like she's lost quite a bit more weight and she's happy. She says she never ran more than 10 miles in her life before, and now she's putting that life away. She finishes in the half marathon and says thank you to the biggest loser. She states that she has lost 107 lbs. On The Jay Leno Show, she mentions losing 122 pounds, meaning she lost 49 pounds after leaving the ranch. Also on the Jay Leno show we find out that Rebecca is dating Daniel.

Week 11

First aired November 24, 2009

Tonight's episode of NBC's The Biggest Loser, Second Chance, opens with Amanda telling us she has lost her only ally and now it is just her. Allen says it was just intense, then we see a flashback to the argument between Rudy and Rebecca. Amanda talks about how it would be awesome if since she was voted on to the show, that she could make it to the finale. They talk about this being their last week at the ranch. Rudy reminds them that one of the five of them will win this.

Bob and Jillian arrive. Bob says Rebecca would have been the one to win this show. Rudy tells them Rebecca was playing both sides. Jillian confronts him and tells him to admit that Rebecca was the strongest and the biggest threat and that is why they voted her out. Rudy refuses to admit that fact, so Bob and Jillian take them to the gym for the last week at the ranch workout and they show n o mercy. We are treated to flashbacks at how much strength and endurance they have gained since arriving at the ranch. It's amazing how much they have changed. We see them struggling in the first week then flash forward to how easy it is for them now. They should be proud of themselves, as should Bob and Jillian.

The Save Yourself Quiz Back in the house, Alison drops by to congratulate them on making the final five and welcomes them to their final week on campus. She tells them they have learned a lot about reshaping their bodies, but they have also learned it's not just about eating right and working out. It's about finding balance in their lives when they go home. She introduces Suze Orman, Financial Adviser. She says she is there to help them find the balance between health and wealth. Suze tells them that one will win this competition and they need to understand that wealth is a part of their health and obesity is a very expensive disease. She talks about how much more a person that is obese pays for life insurance - between $500 and $1000 more. She suggests to Allen that he call the insurance agency and tell him he is not that obese person anymore. She talks to Rudy about checking his credit scores. She tells him a consumer can check as often as they want without affecting their scores.

Our final five arrive at the gym to find five treadmills. Alison tells them that once they go home, they not only have to manage their weight, but also their bank accounts. She tells them they will not be competing against each other, they will be on their own. She tells them that they will be answering questions from the treadmill. For every questions they get right, they will have $1000 deposited in their Save Yourself Account at TD Ameritrade, but for every incorrect answer, the treadmill will go one level higher and one level faster. They take their places. Question 1 is how much less a year does an obese person make - the answer is $7000. They all get question 1 correct. The second question is how much would you save if a family of four swapped out one meal out a day eating out for a meal at home for a year - the answer - $8760. The second question is answered correctly by everyone but Amanda, who has to increase her speed and incline by one level. Question three - how much do Americans spend on gastric bypass surgery every year - $4.4 billion dollars. Allen is the only one to get the correct answer. Question four - how much do Americans spend on obesity-related health issues every year - $147 billion. Everyone gets the correct answer. Question five - how much money will you save over 40 years by going from obese to your ideal weight - $1 million. Everyone gets the correct except Allen.

Final winnings: Amanda $3000, Rudy $4000, Liz $4000, Danny $4000 and Allen $4000.

Jillian has a talk with the contestants about going home and eating right while they sit around the kitchen table. Later at the gym, Bob talks to them about keeping the weight off and wants to know what is scary for them, so they can work on it before they go home. Amanda makes a promise to herself and Bob that she will never go back. She asks Bob to go outside with her and talk. She tells him what a friend he has been to her. She says she is ready to go home, but also very scared. We are taken back to the training sessions and shown how far Amanda has come. Bob tells her he was looking for a hero this season, and he found one in her. Liz and Danny talk about being the last team standing and possibly making the finals together. Liz says she couldn't have done it without him - she says she knew they would push each other further every day. They talk about how much they trust each other. Liz credits him with helping to save her life.

The Challenge It's Thanksgiving week and our contestants arrive on a football field for their challenge. Alison greets them and tells them that, Amanda has lost 57 pounds, Liz 64 pounds, Danny 126 pounds, Rudy 134 pounds and Allen 87 pounds. She says today they will carry that weight one last time. Alison tosses a 28 pound football to Rudy which represents the amount of weight he lost the first week. They will each be harnessed to a barrel which contains 10 footballs, each weighing the amount they lost each week of the competition. The barrel will raise into the air as they make their way across the field. There are stands on the field, each representing one week of the show. Each trip down the field, they will drop off one football representing that week. The first person shedding all their weight and knock out their old selves, will win the challenge. The winner will win a vacation package for two to the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl. She then introduces Rod Woodson, wearing his Steelers Jersey. Rod tells them that the NFL will also donate $5000 in athletic equipment to the school of their choice.

They begin the challenge. As expected, Allen takes an early lead and makes it to the stand first, followed by Amanda. Rod Woodson cheers them on. Allen and Rudy are in the lead at week four. Allen maintains his lead, Amanda and Rudy continue to challenge. Allen is still leading in week 9. Allen takes his week 10 ball and completes the course alone. Rudy comes in second. Amanda is third. Liz is fourth and Danny comes in last. Alison congratulates Allen and asks what school he wants to have the equipment donated to. He says he wants it to go to his daughters school, St. Peter's Lutheran, in Columbus, IN. Alison congratulates them again and tells them to enjoy their last week on campus. Back at the house, Danny plays and sings a song he wrote about their time at the Biggest Loser Ranch. Very nice voice Danny! Good song too!

The Last Chance Workout Bob puts them through yet another grueling workout - giving them everything they need to stay above that yellow line one last time. Bob pits Rudy and Danny against each other on the stair-stepper. By the time he is finished with them, they are sweating buckets. Jillian puts Allen through the paces boxing. Bob works with Amanda telling her that pink has had it good in this house. Amanda says she is definitely going home if she falls below the yellow line because it is her against "those" four. Jillian has Liz pulling her through they gym, then lifting weights, and finally doing push-ups while she sits on her back.

The Weigh-In Time for the long walk to the weigh-in. They arrive and Alison greets them. She tells Rudy that he could leave here tonight breaking a record for the most weight lost in 11 weeks. She tells Danny that he is tied for the record of losing double digits for six weeks in a row - if he loses double digits tonight, the record is his. Tonight no one has an advantage, no one has immunity. The winner of tonight's weigh-in wins a Chef Curtis Stone visit to their home to show them how to cook right.

Danny 288 -16 5.26% (-142 pounds - double digits 7 weeks in a row - another record!) Rudy 296 -12 3.90% (-146 pounds in 11 weeks - another record broken!) Amanda 186 - 7 3.63%

YELLOW LINE: Allen 230 - 8 3.36% (-95 pounds) Liz 198 - 5 2.46%. (-69 pounds)

Liz worries that Amanda is the swing vote especially since she wrote Amanda's name down a couple of weeks ago. Alison dismisses Bob and Jillian. Alison says this week is different, because tomorrow they will all be going home, and tonight's vote will be giving someone a shot at winning the final prize. Amanda says she is the deciding factor and Liz and Allen's fate is in her hands. Allen and Liz plead their cases to Amanda. Amanda says she fought hard this week because she knew if she fell below the yellow line she was going home. Allen asks to spend a couple of minutes alone with Amanda. He tells her she has a shot and needs to look at what is best for her in the end. He says he has not been able to get the percentages and that Liz has voted against her.

The Elimination The contestants arrive at the elimination room. Alison tells them that they had a hard decision to make tonight, deciding who would be the final member in the final four.

Danny votes Allen. Rudy votes Liz. Amanda votes Allen.

Amanda says she wanted to support Liz as one woman to another and needs her to push her even harder towards her goal of winning. She tells Liz she wants her by her side. Allen says he looks forward to holding his daughter and telling his wife how much he missed her. Alison says she looks forward to seeing him at the finale, but it's time to say goodbye to his friends.

Allen arrived at the ranch weighing 325 pounds, he leaves weighing 230. He says if you want to take care others, you have to take care of yourself. He says now as a firefighter and EMT, he will be able to take care of them. Allen says the next time we see him he will be a smoking hot firefighter on a calendar!

We catch up 24 hours later as Allen arrives home to a cheering crowd at City of Columbus Fire Station Number 2 and a big hug and kiss from his wife and daughter. He thanks everyone for their support and prayers. He says he has a ways to go, but he will be working hard. He says he now has a chance to pay if forward and will not let his family and community down. Allen now weighs 220 pounds. He says he now has a positive outlook on his future. His wife says before he went to the ranch, they were not connected anymore, but now he not only tells her he loves her, but also shows it. He presents the check to the school for athletic gear, the works out with the children and the Indianapolis Colts mascot, Blue. The mascot coyly asked about The Biggest Loser Mascot Edition and shows off his big belly. Allen has inspired 275 people to start a Biggest Loser competition at his gym. In six weeks, they have lost a total of 2,368 pounds!

Semi-Final

First aired December 1, 2009

The contestants all go home for 60 days, in which they have to find time to balance time with their families, their jobs, and find time to work out. They each get sent a video from Bob and Jillian, saying how far they have come and showing them during Week 1, and how they are no longer that person. Amanda also get Extra gum in her package. After they watch the videos they each get a phone call from either Bob or Jillian, explaining that they were going to run a marathon. They all look forward to the challenge, but are scared. Later they each get visits from either Bob or Jillian, checking in on them: Jillian focuses on helping Danny and his wife work together, Bob encourages Amanda to put all her effort into working out, Jillian works with Liz on focusing on herself before others for once, seeing she is isolated and a gym is no where near, and her husband is often out of town, while Bob helps Rudy balance his family, his job, and working out. They all come back to run the marathon, and at the halfway point each one is accompanied by a companion: Rudy gets Dina, Amanda gets her best friend, Liz gets her husband, and Danny gets his wife. Rudy finishes first, then Amanda, and then Danny and Liz finish together. At the weigh in, Liz and Amanda fall below the yellow line, and they are put to America's vote to see who will go on to the finale.

Finale

First aired December 8, 2009

In the first five minutes of the finale, it was revealed that Amanda made the final three due to America's vote, and Liz was eliminated. Sean revealed that he now has a baby girl named Jillian. Antoine proposed to Alexandra during the finale, she said yes. Antoine lost 152 pounds over the course of the show and showed of a buff physique when he proposed. [9] Rebecca Meyer won the $100,000 prize of the eliminated contestants. It was also announced that Shay would reappear on the season nine finale and that Subway would give her $1,000 for each pound she lost. Danny Cahill wins the $250,000 prize, and is the eighth season's Biggest Loser.

One item of note is that Tracey's starting weight was listed as 250 pounds; she missed the first weigh-in and was listed at 238 in the second weigh in, but that was after she apparently lost 12 pounds. The difference in weight would not affect her overall ranking, however.

Another item of note is that Daniel who weighed 454 lbs in The Biggest Loser: Couples 2, and weighed 201 lbs in the finale, lost a total of 253 lbs for a total percentage of weight loss of 55.73%, placing him at not only the biggest weight loss ever on the Biggest Loser, but highest percentage as well.
