Electro Love is the second studio album by American R&B recording artist Cassie. The singer has worked with "a who's who in the world of it-producers";[1] her released singles have been produced by Danja, Mario Winans, Bryan-Michael Cox and RedOne. After being in production since 2007, Electro Love will be released on May 20th, 2010 in the United States.

Production

MTV News reported in June 2007 that contrary to rumors, Cassie had not been dropped from Bad Boy Records after releasing two singles from her self-titled debut album. Diddy said that she was in the studio working with producers Kanye West and Pharrell Williams on her sophomore album.[2] The singer also collaborated with Ryan Leslie, Swizz Beatz, Bryan-Michael Cox, and Rodney Jerkins.[3] Cassie said that her new album will demonstrate more "independence"; there will be a "difference in vocals, a little bit more personality. And it's definitely a sensual album." She said that she was able "to work with different people and [learn] what their habits were and what works well with me".[4]

The album was originally scheduled for a September 2007 release, and tentatively titled Connecticut Fever.[5] However, the album's release date was pushed back several times, eventually to 2010. Throughout 2008, enough songs from Cassie's studio sessions were leaked to make up a whole album, including, "Turn the Lights Off", "Thirsty", "My House", "Activate", "In Love With the DJ", "In Love With U" and 2 the Morning". Two songs were also officially released in that year, "Official Girl", the album's first single, and "Is It You", a single from the soundtrack, Step Up 2: The Streets.[5]

Speaking on changes from her debut album, Cassie said that "I guess I grew up a lot but I'm still in essence the same person [...] I'm more vulnerable and you can hear my vocals better this time around. There's real emotion and a much realer connection with my fans." While "Official Girl" was chosen as the lead single, reported choices included "My House", "Thirsty", and the concept track "Push It". Cassie said that she wanted the single to be "a club record - something fun and danceable". Additional production on the album came from Seven and LV, as well as Diddy himself.[6] By 2009, at least 20 tracks had leaked, including "Stamina", produced by Jerkins, and "Keep On Lovin' Me", produced by and featuring The-Dream. It was also reported that Cassie was no longer collaborating with Ryan Leslie, who had produced the majority of her debut album.[1]

In July 2009, Cassie announced that the album's title would be Electro Love. The idea was given to her by DJ Cassidy; Cassie explained by saying that "it's basically the sound of the album. It's not supposed to be taken so literal. 'Electro' could be like house and techno, but that's not what it is, but it's definitely a dance album. I just wanted it to be a reflection of that and the vibe of the music. It has that love song feel to it, but accompanied by that specific beat." Cassie said that she had also collaborated with Akon, The Neptunes, Danja, Eric Hudson, The Surf Club and Rob Holiday, although she was not sure which tracks were going to be included on the album. The singer also stated that she open to collaborate with Leslie again.[7] Commenting on the number of producers on the album, Cassie said that she "collaborated with a lot of different producers and a lot of different writers, which was an amazing opportunity for me, because on my first album, one producer [Ryan Leslie] straight through…which was fun, but it was nice to experience other people."[8]

Singles

  • The first single from the album, "Official Girl", was released featuring rapper Lil Wayne on August 5, 2008, and was released to radio on September 16, 2008. It was not commercially successful, failing to chart on any of the major Billboard Charts in the US.
  • Cassie recorded a new lead single with Diddy in 2009. The song, "Must Be Love", featured Diddy, and was sent to radio and released digitally on April 14, 2009. "Must Be Love" peaked on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart at number 42.
  • The first official single released is to be Skydiver in January 2010.
