CCP hf (or Crowd Control Productions) is a video game developer based in Reykjavík, Iceland. CCP Games also has subsidiary offices in Slough (Berkshire), Newcastle, United Kingdom; Atlanta, USA; and Shanghai, China.

History

CCP was founded in June 1997 by Reynir Harðarson, Thorolfur Beck and Ívar Kristjánsson[3] for the purpose of making MMORPGs. In order to finance the initial development of Eve Online; CCP developed and published a board game in Iceland called Hættuspil ("Danger Game").[3][4] In April 2000 the company, with Sigurdur Arnljotsson as CEO, raised $2.6 million, through a closed offering organized by Kaupthing Bank, from private investors in Iceland, including the Icelandic Telco Siminn. Approximately half of the initial 21 staff were drawn from the Icelandic dot-com company OZ Interactive, the makers of OZ Virtual.

Recruitment

CCP employs a team comprising 20 nationalities, speaking 31 languages, from every walk of life.

The company is actively hiring for positions in Atlanta, Georgia; Shanghai, China and Reykjavik, Iceland and had in August 2009 hired 70 of already planned 130 positions for the year.

Products

CCP currently has three video game products, the MMORPG Eve Online, the MMORPG World of Darkness and the MMOFPS Dust 514.

Eve Online

EVE Online is CCP's first video game, originally published by Simon & Schuster, Inc. in May 2003. Later CCP hf re-acquired the rights to publish Eve Online[5] after Simon & Schuster Interactive ceased trading. Development continues in a regular free expansion release schedule.

EVE Online is a massively multiplayer space-based virtual reality. Its design is one that fosters experiences unattainable in any other form of media, where true human interaction and true human emotions can be shared and experienced in a living and evolving world. It is CCP’s belief that massively multiplayer games are the biggest revolution in computer gaming history and CCP is dedicated to making the dream of a true virtual reality come into being. EVE Online has sustained continuous growth since its release in 2003. The players all co-exist on one server, in one game world. This means that all players can interact with one another if they choose to do so. It also means that if you are famous in EVE Online, you are known by the entire EVE community, not by the population of one game server. Both the technical design of EVE Online and the emergent social behavior of its community have been praised and studied by scholars and industry professionals across the globe.

Quafe

Real-world Quafe.

Quafe is both the name of a popular drink in the EVE Online universe[6] and the name of the in-game corporation which produces it.[7] On October 22, 2004, CCP hf made a marketing first when they launched the virtual drink for sale in the real world.[8] CCP sold the drink from their website for $1.50 (USD) for a single bottle, or $15.10 for a multi-pack, but sales of this drink have since ceased. The real-world Quafe soft drink had a lemon-lime taste.

World of Darkness

In October 2006 Magnús Bergsson (CMO of CCP) stated that Eve would not be the only game to come out of CCP.[9] On 11 November 2006 CCP and White Wolf, Inc. jointly announced that CCP would be working on a World of Darkness MMORPG.[10] CCP plans to focus on the development of this game from March 2009 onwards.[11]

Dust 514

On the 18th of August 2009 Hilmar Veigar Pétursson announced a new game being developed by CCP's Shanghai office, called Dust 514[12], a ground-based FPS with RTS and MMO elements. Confirmed to be a console game at release, it is not known whether a PC version will be developed as well. DUST 514 will let console gamers fight for control of planets in EVE's setting of New Eden. Players in EVE Online can fight in space with their fleets, but will be able to hire DUST 514 players to fight for them planet-side. If the DUST 514 players are successful, the EVE Online player who hired them will be able to take control of the planet.[13]

CSM

EVE Online has a peer-elected council of players known as the Council of Stellar Management (CSM) that represents the interests of EVE's subscribers to the title's developer CCP Games and works with them to improve the MMO. CSM delegates are expressly forbidden from divulging or using insider information.

Merger

On November 11, 2006, White Wolf and CCP Games jointly announced a merger between the two companies during the keynote address at the Eve Online Fanfest 2006.[14][15] White Wolf became a wholly-owned independent subsidiary of CCP hf, with Hilmar Veigar Pétursson remaining as the CEO, and Mike Tinney remaining as President of White Wolf | CCP North America.
