Seattle Sounders FC is an American soccer club founded in 2008, after the city of Seattle was awarded a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise. Sounders FC began playing competitive soccer in the 2009 season. It plays its home games at Qwest Field, competing in the Western Conference of the MLS.[1] The current Sounders FC is the third soccer team from Seattle to bear the Sounders nickname. The tradition was started by Seattle's North American Soccer League team in 1974, and continued by the city's United Soccer Leagues side, formed in 1994.[2] The current Sounders FC is an entity distinct to both of these clubs, and played its first MLS game on March 19, 2009, against Red Bull New York.[3]

As of January 2, 2010, a total of 22 players have participated in at least one league match for Sounders FC. This consists of nineteen outfield players, and three goalkeepers. Midfielder Steve Zakuani and goalkeeper Kasey Keller share the Sounders FC appearance record, having each played 29 MLS regular season games for the club.[4] The club's all-time top scorer is Fredy Montero with twelve goals,[4] while Freddy Ljungberg holds the record for assists, having provided the final pass for nine goals.[4] Six Seattle Sounders FC players have represented their country at full international level. Keller has made the most international appearances (102 for the United States),[5] while Ljungberg has scored the most goals (14 for Sweden).[6]

Players

Major League Soccer clubs are allowed a roster of 24 players at any one time during the MLS season. In its inaugural 2009 season, Sounders FC used a total of nineteen outfield players, as well as three goalkeepers, who are documented in a separate section below. Players who were contracted to the club but never played an MLS game are not listed.

All statistics are for the MLS regular season games only, and are correct as of January 2, 2010.[4]

Goalkeepers

In soccer, the goalkeeper is the only player allowed to defend his team's goal with his hands. Sounders FC's most used goalkeeper is former United States international Kasey Keller, who captained Seattle in their first season of competitive soccer.[12] As of January 2, 2010, Sounders FC's other keepers have only played in the MLS when Keller was unavailable due to suspension.[13]

MLS regulations permit teams to name eight players from outside of the United States in their rosters. However, this limit can be exceeded by trading international slots with another MLS team, or if one or more of the overseas players is a refugee or has permanent residency rights in the USA.[15] As of January 2, 2010, nine players from outside the United States have played in the MLS for Seattle Sounders FC.

Additional players

In addition to competing in Major League Soccer every year, Sounders FC participate in other competitions. They enter the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament annually, and depending on their success in domestic competitions may qualify for either the North American SuperLiga tournament, or the CONCACAF Champions League. Below is a list of players who have not appeared in a league match, but have played for the team in other competitions.
