Incidents & Accidents

Ferry 'Tindaya'

Following a calm night at sea an unspecified Naviera Armas ferry, which sails weekly between Portimão, Funchal (Madeira) and the Canary Islands, spent four hours at sea, at the mouth of the Arade River, between Portimão and Ferragudo, before being able to enter the river and dock safely.

Weather conditions were deemed too perilous for the ferry to dock immediately on arrival, and, even after the four-hour wait, it required the help of tug boats and a Navy escort.

Passengers said that, whilst their safety was never jeopardised, the 156-metre boat was “heaving to and fro” on the high swells. They were initially told there would be “an hour, to an hour and a half’s wait”, for sea, wind and tidal conditions to improve.

The Naviera Armas ferry eventually docked at Portimão at 13h00, four hours behind schedule, and left close to 17h00 later that afternoon.
