  • It is very unclear where this flickr portrait came from. It is the only upload by Churchtown2010, and it is very unlikely that this person took the picture as there is no attribution. For the CC-BY-2.0 license as used on flickr, attribution is required, but there is none given. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 07:14, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

71.108.48.106 (talk) 14:50, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Note to wikipedia editors: Nature of this submission changed by original uploader. In retrospect, realized previous version of this submission ("Prevue_Guide-edit_mode.jpg", http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7277/prevueguideeditmode.jpg) was probably unnecessarily similar to a separate submission by me ("EPG-edit_mode.jpg"). This submission entry is now for visually demonstrating an entirely different phenomenon related to Prevue Channel, one also discussed by target article. Forgive this style of image submission revisionism if not appropriate - am very new to Wikipedia editing. (05:23, 22 January 2010 (UTC))

And fair use is one of the more tricky areas. The pciture does not really identify the network, Can you say how it improves the article though? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 22:58, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can describe how I believe it would improve the article. :) For appropriate context, please go to TV Guide Channel's History section and read the first paragraph beneath the Electronic Program Guide subheading, followed by the first paragraph beneath the Split-Screen Electronic Program Guide subheading, followed finally by the first three paragraphs beneath the Prevue Guide subheading. What this image submission, as a whole, is intended to visually demonstrate, is what that reading culminates in upon reaching that third paragraph beneath Prevue Guide. I.e., as a whole, it comparatively illustrates how this national TV network, which was powered by localized software installations, appeared when those localized software installations were operating properly (top inset within image), versus how it appeared when those localized software installations suddenly crashed (bottom inset). In addition to that, both halves (top and bottom) of the submitted image, when taken alone, each have secondary usefulness and relevance to the second paragraph beneath the Prevue Guide subheading. That second paragraph describes not only the software's normal local operation in technical terms, but the visual appearance of the satellite feed it used. That said, the top and bottom halves of the submitted image visually illustrate each of those separately, when taken alone. (All that in mind, my plan, if this submission is accepted, is to caption it with something like ~"Top: local Prevue Guide installation operating normally atop satellite feed. Bottom: local Prevue Guide installation failure, exposing raw satellite feed's unmodified appearance to cable subscribers.")
Anyway, I believe the primary phenomenon this image submission demonstrates (the comparative one) is worthy of visually illustrating in the first place because the software in question was well known in its day for crashing and showing subscribers what its bottom inset depicts -- to the extent that even in modern times, one can find people uploading old video recordings of those crashes to Youtube, as well as written mentions of them elsewhere in general; see http://www.google.com/q=prevue+guru+meditation or http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=prevue+guru+meditation for examples.
In any case, last week I began a major enhancement of the TV Guide Channel article, and with my written enhancements now finished, I had hoped to insert some visual illustrations complimenting their major points. So far, I've added two public domain photos (the hardware used by this channel's software). Now only my two non-free image submissions remain (this one, and EPG_edit-mode.jpg). (Regarding EPG_edit-mode.jpg itself, it's meant to visually illustrate the 4th paragraph beneath the Electronic Program Guide subheading. However, the phenomenon it depicts is also relevant to, and is also mentioned within, later portions of the overall History write-up. I.e., it doesn't illustrate a minor footnote in the channel's history, but rather a phenomenon many viewers were subject to seeing for 15 years between 1985 and 1999. So, as far as EPG_edit-mode.jpg itself, it illustrating what was widely seen for 15 years is my argument for its own fair use worthiness. (09:45, 24 January 2010 (UTC))
