Yelle is a French electro/electropop band founded by lead singer and namesake, Yelle (born Julie Budet; January 17, 1983; Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, France) and GrandMarnier. Third member, Tepr joined the band before the recording of their debut album. The band came to prominence when they posted an early version of the song "Je Veux Te Voir" on MySpace in September 2005, it later reached the top five in France. Their debut album, Pop-Up was released in 2007.
History
Budet met and became good friends with producer GrandMarnier[1] in 2000[2][3] and in 2005 they began making music together when both wanted to start a French electropop band.[4][5] Yelle rose to fame on MySpace when they posted a song titled "Short Dick Cuizi", which later became "Je Veux Te Voir", with their account in September 2005. The song mocks rapper Cuizinier of TTC and is a female reply to his songs.[4][5][6] It received a positive response and soon attracted the attention of record label, Source.[5][2]
Yelle then began working on and recording their debut album, Pop-Up in 2006,[4] producer Tepr had been roped into the band after meeting GrandMarnier while working as a journalist.[1] GrandMarnier and Tepr produced the music, while Budet would join them in writing lyrics under the collective name, Yelle.[7] In 2008, after being asked by Katy Perry, they remixed her song "Hot N Cold"[1] and later participated the second installment of iTunes Foreign Exchange, for which they recorded a French version of Robyn's Who's That Girl?. Yelle embarked on a full North American tour [2] and also performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2008.[4][1][3] Budet was featured on Fatal Bazooka's French number one song "Parle à ma main" in 2007.[8]

Artistry
The name of the band, Yelle, began as an acronym of the phrase "You Enjoy Life", "YEL", but was later feminised to "Yelle"[1] because a Belgian band was already using the name.[3] The band has enjoyed success outside of France despite making songs exclusively in French[4][1] and have toured overseas in non-French speaking countries.[2][6][5]
