MediaCoder is a freeware audio and video batch transcoder for Windows and Wine. It has been under development by Stanley Huang since 2005. In 2009, MediaCoder started to be branded under the name of Broad Intelligence Technologies product. MediaCoder is free of charge and is supported by bundling OpenCandy software recommendation service in its installer. There are no ads in the software GUI, although by default a web page containing ads is loaded on every startup.

MediaCoder uses various open source audio and video codecs, among several proprietary codecs and tools to transcode different audio/video formats and has many extra features. Common uses for the program include compression, file type conversion and extraction of audio from video files. Many formats are supported, including MP3, Vorbis, AAC, Windows Media Audio, RealAudio, WAV, H.264, MPEG-4 Part 2, MPEG-2, AVI, CD, and DVD.

Features

MediaCoder is a front-end/GUI for a collection of audio/video command line utilities and dynamic libraries (including audio/video codecs and multiplexers). MediaCoder maintains a unified parameter tree whose leaves (parameter values) can be altered through the application GUI, a web-based tree view, user interfaces for specific devices (e.g. PSP, iPhone) and conforming HTTP requests. It maps the parameter tree into command line options or calling parameters for various codecs and tools. MediaCoder pipes the decoder's output into the encoder's input, rather than using temporary files. This allows it to convert large amounts of data without using excessive disk space. Some of the included utilities are also patched to add extra interfaces.

MediaCoder has a built-in media streaming server which can be used to stream out audio and video files through HTTP protocol. It is able to apply on-the-fly transcoding for both audio and video streaming with some of its supported audio and video codecs.

MediaCoder has started to add experimental GPU-based video processing and encoding features since 0.7.1. The initial approach is done by using NVIDIA CUDA technology.

Supported Formats

MediaCoder invokes and pipes data with various open-source or freeware decoders, encoders and multiplexers which are updated and improved by their authors or maintainers. The software also contains some original modules to make up for the deficiency of open-source codecs or to decrease coherence with 3rd-party components, including avsinput (front-end to AviSynth), wmcodec (front-end to Windows Media Format SDK), cudah264enc (front-end to nVidia CUDA H.264 encoder), vfwenc (front-end to Video For Windows codecs), vfcuda (experimental CUDA accelerated video filters). These approaches make the software support most popular media formats while not exclusively depend on any 3rd-party components.

Supported formats includes MP3, Vorbis, AAC, AAC+ v1/v2, AC-3, MPEG Audio L2, Musepack, WMA, Speex, AMR, ADPCM, FLAC, WavPack, Monkey's Audio, OptimFROG, Apple Lossless, WAV/PCM, H.264, MPEG-4 Part 2, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.263, Flash Video, Theora, RealVideo, Windows Media, AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2/VOB, MPEG TS, Matroska, MP4, RealMedia, ASF/WMV, QuickTime, AVCHD, Ogg Media, as are listed in the software's GUI.

License

MediaCoder used to be open source prior to 2008: these versions and sources were present on the former SourceForge page of MediaCoder Project (dead)[2]. The current license is MediaCoder EULA and the source code is not available. Following these changes, on 10 June 2009, a ticket was opened on FFmpeg's development site, alleging "Possible MediaCoder GPL violation". Although the author of MediaCoder participated in the discussion, the issue has yet to be resolved.[3]

Reception

A March 2009 round-up of free video conversion software in Chip.de found MediaCoder the best all-round converter.[4] It was also evaluated in editorial reviews or round-ups in PC World,[5] Dutch version of ZDnet,[6] Russian Computerra,[7][8] Indian Techtree,[9] and other on-line publications.[10][11] MediaCoder was recommended or mentioned in the technology columns of mainstream media around the world, including USA Today,[12][13] New York Times,[14][15] Germany's Der Spiegel,[16] Bild,[17] and Die Welt,[18] Argentinian La Nacion[19][20][21], Mexico's El Universal,[22] and Thai Bangkok Post.[23] Tutorials were published in books from O'Reilly Japan,[24] Pearson Education,[25] and other publishers.[26][27] Online tutorials appeared in the Polish version of PC World,[28] Chip.de's video podcast,[29] and netzwelt.de.[30] MediaCoder comes bundled with some portable players from Memorex and Life![31][32]
