The Westwood College School of Technology educates students in various aspects of technology including computer network engineering and information systems.[1] The program offers associate and bachelor degrees and is available at campuses in California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Virginia and Texas as well as Westwood College Online.

Associate Degree Programs

  • Information Technology Students in the Information Technology Program acquire the skills necessary to design, install, configure, and maintain enterprise-wide networks.[2] Students will learn to install industry-standard operating systems, manage and configure services in an internetworked environment, and design, plan, implement, operate, troubleshoot, and secure wireless LAN’s.[3] Course topics include Microsoft Management Console, Active Directory Services, and System Architecture.[4]

Bachelor Degree Programs

  • Game Software Development The Game Software Development Program[5] allows students the opportunity to develop programs that support motion graphics, develop interactive computer applications, and formulate and design software systems to predict and measure outcomes of design.[6] Course topics include 3-D Game Engine Architecture, Analysis and Design, and Artificial Intelligence for Games.[7]
  • Information Technology: Major in Computer Forensics The Computer Forensics Program[8] offers students the opportunity to develop a secure computer environment and learn techniques for collecting and analyzing computer-related evidence. Students will learn how to implement e-business security policies, identify security threats, develop countermeasures using firewall systems, and manage the deployment of security solutions.[9] Course topics include Forensics, Forensic Digital Evidence Handling and Investigation, Managing Malicious Software and Introduction to Network Security.[10]
  • Information Technology: Major in Network Management The Network Management Program[11] educates students how to implement enterprise networks, apply industry-standard tools to manage those networks, design strategies to secure large-scale networks from risks, learn to plan, budget, design, and implement advanced network projects, and LANs.[12] Courses include Introduction to Web Programming, Wireless Technologies, and Emerging Technologies.[13]
  • Information Technology: Major in Systems Security The Systems Security Program[14] trains students to secure industry-standard operating systems, design secure networks, and write and design security permissions, network services, encryption, DMZ (demilitarized zone) services, database, and mail servers.[15] Course topics include Network Essentials, Introduction to Networking, LAN Security, Internet Security, and Computer Forensics Analysis.[16]
  • Cisco Network Systems: Major in Cisco Network Systems A major in Cisco Network Systems[17] prepares students for the Cisco Certified Network Associate and Cisco Certified Network Professional Exams. Courses are designed to prepare students for industry standard certificates. Course topics include Advanced Routing, IP Telephony, LAN Switching, Linux Operating Systems, and Optimized Converged Networks.

Acknowledgments

Westwood College is part of the Cisco Networking Academy Program, which provides training for Cisco Certification. Cisco has launched new curricula for its programs at Westwood including Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Discovery and CCNA Exploration as well as I.T. Essentials and the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP).[18]

Curriculum

Westwood College operates on a term schedule. Degree programs for the School of Technology start five times a year, and courses are offered year round, with day, evening and online options. Depending on the degree program, School of Technology students can earn an associate degree in 20 months or a bachelor’s degree in three years. The curriculum is divided into degree-focused courses and general education courses—approximately two-thirds of every student’s schedule is spent in classes specifically addressing their chosen degree. Students choose their general education courses, which include Art History, Communication, Public Speaking, Critical Thinking, and Political Science among others.

Accreditation

Westwood College's various locations are nationally accredited by either the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT)[19] or the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).[20][21][22][23][24]

Westwood is approved by all branches of the military to offer benefits and tuition assistance opportunities.[25]

Westwood became a candidate for accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) in October 2007.[26] The HLC is an organization dedicated to serving the common good by assuring and advancing the quality of higher learning. To become HLC accredited, a school must meet five criteria: mission and integrity; preparing for the future; student learning and effective teaching; acquisition, discovery and application of knowledge; and engagement and service.

In addition, each campus is licensed and approved to operate by the appropriate state regulatory bodies.[27]
