Basarab I of Wallachia
Appearance
Basarab I was an early ruler of the principality of Wallachia, known as Întemeietorul (The Founder) (c. 1310–1352).
His name is probably of Cuman origin, meaning "Father King", being derived from basar meaning "to rule" and aba meaning "father".Other scholars (especially Bogdan Petriceicu-Hasdeu consider its name as autochtonous, from ban meaning "ruler", and the dacian word saraba meaning "head" (remaining in some romanian regions as saramb).
In 1330 he defeated the Hungarians led by Carol Robert of Anjou at the Battle of Posada, thus gaining the independence of Wallachia from Hungarian sovereignty. One of the most important records of this battle is the Viennese Illuminated Chronicle.
