Erbil International Airport (IATA: EBL, ICAO: ORER) is an airport located in the north western part of the city of Erbil (also written Arbil or Irbil, Hewlêr in Kurdish) adjacent to the suburb of Ankawa in Iraqi Kurdistan.
It is administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government under a special committee of the Prime Minister and is one of two international airports in Kurdistan.
History
The airport was originally built at the beginning of the 1970s' as an Iraqi military base. The Iraqi government planned to build a general aviation airport on the site. However, following the Kurdish uprising in 1991, Kurdish forces took over the area. The Kurdistan Regional Government could not get the investment needed until after the Invasion of Iraq. By March of 2003, with the assistance of the United States and other multinational forces, work had begun on new facilities.
Terminal
The airport has facilities for both cargo and passengers and sees daily flights. Erbil International Airport has one terminal for departures and arrivals. The new terminal building is completed with 2.500.000 passenger per year capacity in 2009.
