R4-E Riot Gear for Crowd Management and Corrections

At the 2007 33rd G8 summit in Germany, 13,000 officers were deployed. On those, 433 were injured. [2]. To quantify the threats associated with riots, a Canadian Standard was established in 2006: CAN/CSA Z617-06 Personal Protective Equipment for Blunt Trauma. The R4-E Suit complies with CSA Z617-06 Impact Attenuation (as confirmed by an Independent Facility) for the upper and lower body with specific protection levels and coverage for the shoulders, torso, chest, abdomen, back, spine, elbows, forearms, biceps, groin, hips/pelvis, thighs, knees, and shins areas. This Mawashi R4-E Blunt trauma personal protective equipment has a standard feature comprising stab/spike protection front plates that cover from the groin up to the neck and a rear plate covering the lower to upper back region. The Suit offers users a full range-of-motion (i.e. flexibility) and complete ease-of-motion (i.e. mobility). The Mawashi R4-E Suit incorporates a “secure off-set” design with an Ergonomic sub-harness that stabilizes the protective plates over the torso so that ventilation channels and spacers are present underneath the suit.

T-RED Use of Force Training Gear

The T-RED use of force training suit offers a high level of protection against Blunt trauma. Lightweight, highly mobile and body-moulded, the T-RED stays comfortable when worn for long periods. The T-RED gear has an adjustable fastening system to put it on and remove it quickly and easily. Its Ergonomic Flex System is a 2-part hinge system integrated with each moving gear element allowing a greater fluidity of movement. An integrated passive cooling system is comprised of semi-hemispheric ball structure, reducing the contact area between the gear and the body improving air-flow, hence cooling the body core temperature.

Active Microclimate Cooling System

This system is designed to reduce the human body temperature so that a person wearing additional personal protective equipment may more safely withstand adverse heat conditions. This system may also be used simply to increase the comfort of a person in hot environments. Overall, this personal cooling system influences the rate of evaporation of water vapour from the skin of the body of its user, thereby accelerating the phase change of sweat liquid to vapour. The suction created in the space between the panels and the user also draws more humidity and heat away from the body. This results in the cooling of the user being more efficient. The personal cooling system can be used by many different persons and in many different situations. Examples of people that can benefit from using this system include firemen, law enforcement personnel, military personnel, construction workers, petroleum industry workers, smelting plant workers or boiler operators.

Tactical Knee & Elbow Pads

During operational & tactical maneuvers, soldiers and tactical units quickly changes position from standing, running, kneeling on one or booth knees, crawling, or laying prone. Their knees and elbows are constantly hitting ground, rocks, walls, and other sharp edges. The current knee pads issued to the soldiers turn, twist, and fall down along the leg. These pads generally offer poor mobility & flexibility at the joints. Mawashi developped revolutionnary tactical knee & elbow pads that are extremely mobile & flexible. Their Biomimetics approach helped study the mecanisms behind the shell of the Lobster Tail. These principles were then applied to design a protection that enhances the range & ease of motion.

HI-2000 Chest Protector

With the HI-2000 Chest Protector, athletes can practice their art using full thrown techniques making the training realistic. Mawashi's collaboration with the National Research Council Canada helped them develop a product inspired by the ergonomics of the human body. Lightweight, the HI-2000 has seven layers to protect against high impact techniques such as kicks and punches, and allows the athlete to train with confidence. The comfort and safety of the HI-200 eliminates injuries to the body and enhances the range and ease of motion.

Research and development (R&D) services

R&D solutions

Mawashi is a solutions provider for military, law enforcement, firefighters and industrial clients with core competencies in human factors & ergonomics, biomimetics and impact management. Mawashi has an expertise in high-tech textiles, human physiology, composites, new product development, apparel sewing & design, armour, rapid prototyping, and testing. Mawashi's services & specializations comprise research, design, development, prototyping, manufacturing, and technology transfer.

Scientific research and experimental development (SR&ED)

The key role of Mawashi's scientific research and experimental development protocol is that it ensures there is consistency, accuracy, efficiency, and expediency for all projects and that all of the final work and results are valid within a scientific forum and can form the basis for evolution of science or technology principles and knowledge.

Previous projects

Several very successful previous projects that exemplify Mawashi's strengths in its core science areas of human factors, biomimetics, and ballistic/blunt-force impact management and specializations in product development, advanced apparel and equipment, novel materials, and systems integration include: C4I electronics tactical load carriage, C4I electronics housings, personal cooling systems, knee & elbow protection for dismounted infantry, industrial load-carriage harness, industrial load-transfer belt, advanced multi-threat personal protective equipment, drop-impact durability "add-On" for ceramic plates, and back face signature reduction "insert-plate" for individual protection.

Expertise

Human factors & ergonomics

Mawashi works with the sciences of human factors & ergonomics to better understand the internal and external systems of the human body, how the body reacts to specific situations, and how to appropriately design apparel and equipment that addresses these reactions and situations and enhances individual protection. Mawashi emphasizes understanding and designing for human physiological & psychological processes & responses. The human factors enhanced apparel and equipment ensure that the end-user will be mobile, flexible, comfortable, non-fatigued, non-distracted, and most importantly be well protected from ballistic, blunt-impact, heat, and other serious threats. The sciences of Human Factors and Biomimetics are utilized together to create apparel and equipment that act as a "second-skin" for the individual. By knowing the body structure and its dynamic mechanisms Mawashi provides clothing, under-layers, plates, helmets, etc. that complement the body's natural motions and systems while providing high levels of protection.

Biomimetics & biomimicry

Many of today's challenges in providing lightweight, ergonomic, and protective apparel and equipment can be solved, either wholly or partly, by looking into the vast and phenomenal solutions present in nature. Nature's solutions to highly-complex situations are highly-optimized and often reach far beyond any which mankind has yet to realize. Mawashi studies the planet's life forms that exist in air, water, and on land as well as the "actions" of the planet itself (e.g. lightning, wind, tides, light, etc.). Mawashi combines scientific competencies in biomimetics and Impact Management to deliver better ballistic and blunt-force protection products as well as protection from heat and other detrimental threats. By altering shapes, structures, and configurations of currently employed materials Mawashi obtains significant weight reduction and higher protection solutions.

Impact Management

Mawashi identifies and analyzes a given threat with theoretical and experimental investigation. Once the threat is characterized and quantified, the threat's affects on the human body is adressed. The last stage is building the solutions that will redirect and nullify impacting energy from a bullet or blunt-object that is contacting with the body. Mawashi creates solutions for stab protection and multi-functional/hybrid products offering combined levels of ballistic, stab, blunt-impact, and heat protection.
