Albany is a city in Stearns County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,796 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km²), of which, 1.4 square miles (3.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (7.28%) is water.

Interstate 94 and Minnesota State Highway 238 are two of the main routes in the city.

Demographics

The racial makeup of the city was 98.72% White, 0.22% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.11% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.

There were 708 households out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.4% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 15.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 86.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,577, and the median income for a family was $41,118. Males had a median income of $31,858 versus $18,966 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,383. About 6.0% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.0% of those under age 18 and 14.1% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The Albany Area Schools, district #745, is a consolidated school district with a Junior (7-8) and Senior (9-12) on the eastern side of the city of Albany. The Albany Elementary school (pre-k-6) is located on the same campus site as the secondary schools. Another elementary school, Avon Elementary (pre-k-6) which is part of this public school district is located about six miles east of Albany in Avon. Holy Family School, a k-6 Roman Catholic parochial school is also sited in Albany. The Albany Elementary and Albany Jr./Sr. High both had major additions and renovations to them in 1996, in the high school the addition gave the school a new lunchroom, library, and dozens of new classrooms.
