Bulls Ferry is the area along the Hudson River in the North Hudson County, New Jersey municipalities of West New York, Guttenberg, and North Bergen.

It takes its name from a pre-Revolutionary settlement of the family Bull, who operated a ferry to the burgeoning city of New York across the river. During the Revolutionary War it was known as Block House Point and was occupied by British forces and was site of several skirmishes between them and the Americans.[1][2][3] It was abondoned in 1780, when British troops decamped to the fort at Bergen Neck.[4] Like Burdett's Landing to the north, it was a crucial crossing point. Ferry service continued for several decades until steam ferries, notably from Hoboken, replaced the earlier row-and-sail service. Larger terminals to the north at Edgewater and south West Shore Railroad Terminal at Weeehawken operated until the 1950s.

A number of roads ran down the Hudson Palisades to the ferry slip. Bull's Ferry Road was the original name of Park and Woodcliff Avenues in North Hudson,[5][dead link] and is still used for a street descending from Boulevard East in North Bergen.[6] Another, simply called Ferry Road, passes under the Galaxy Towers which overlook the neighborhood. The slip itself was close to the part of Edgewater once known as Shadyside.[7]

Previous industrial and maritime uses of the area have since the 1980s given way to residential, institutional, and recreational development, including the Palisades Medical Center[8] and the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. The district's major thoroughfare is commonly known as River Road, which is served by New Jersey Transit routes 158 and 188 and NY Waterway buses, with connecting service to Port Imperial, Weehawken.
