Red Bull BC One is an annual international b-boy (breakdance) competition organized by the energy drink company Red Bull. It is an individual (or 'one on one') b-boy competition (as opposed to a crew competition). The main event is a knockout tournament featuring sixteen b-boys, chosen for exceptional skills in the dance and good character, competing in one-on-one battles decided by a panel of five judges. 2007 was the only year, when winners of worldwide regional knockout tournaments preceding the main event, along with the prior year's top finishers as well as wild card selections, comprised the final group of 16.

The event has been held in a different city and country every year. In 2004 it was held in Biel, Switzerland, 2005 in Berlin, Germany, 2006 in São Paulo, Brazil, 2007 in Johannesburg, South Africa, 2008 in Paris, France, and 2009 in New York City, USA. It has been announced that the 2010 event will be held in Tokyo, Japan.[1]

An official Red Bull BC One DVD was released for the 2004 and 2005 events. The production of the DVDs has been criticized as due to musical rights, the live music played during the competition had to be dubbed over.[2][3] From 2006 and on, Red Bull stopped releasing DVDs and made the videos available online for free.[4] Alastair Siddon directed a film about the Red Bull BC One 2007. The title is of that movie is "Turn it Loose" and it will be released in March 2010.

2009

Red Bull BC One was held on November 18th, 2009 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Tickets went on sale at midnight, October 9th, 2009 and were sold out within 30 minutes.

For 2008, Red Bull BC One was held in Paris on November 5th at the new 104 Cent Quatre avenue.

2007

For 2007, qualifiers were held in May and June in 9 countries: France, Japan, Germany, Brazil, South Africa, USA, Sweden, Taiwan, and Russia. The winner from each of these 9 events, along with 4 wild card entries and the top 3 finishers from last year's 2006 main event, are the final 16 for the 2007 main event. However, two of the breakdancers - Baek (South Korea Korea), a wild card selection, and Just Do It (Netherlands Netherlands), who won the Germany qualifier - had to withdraw from the competition due to injury.[5] They were replaced by breakdancers Cico (Italy Italy) and Jed (South Africa South Africa).[6]
