7de Laan is a South African soap opera in Afrikaans with some English and Zulu in between. It features English subtitles. It started in 2000 and is broadcast evenings on SABC 2 from Monday to Friday.

It is set in and around the fictional Sewende Laan ("Seventh Avenue") and the suburb of Hillside in Johannesburg where all the characters live or work. Incidentally, the street and shopfronts which are featured on the opening visuals, are that of Seventh Street in Melville, Johannesburg.

Sewende Laan was originally broadcast from Monday to Thursday, but was then later broadcast on Fridays as well, as a daily soap. It airs on SABC 2 from Monday to Friday nights from 18:27-19:00pm.

Sewende Laan is also broadcast on SABC Africa, which is a channel on DStv (SA Satellite TV Service). Ratings are generally around the 2 million mark according to TVSA.co.za.

Shops/Businesses

The soapie is set in Hillside which is one of the suburbs in Johannesburg. Within the suburb, there are alot of businesses and shops where the characters work and hang around in. These are the current locations that are used:

  • Hillside Heights

Hillside Heights is the centre of Hillside. Hilside Heights is an old bulding which contains small apartments where most of the characters live in. The Hillside Heights building is owned by Gita McGregor and Oubaas Van Zyl is the keeper of the building.

  • Oppikoffie

Charmaine Buekes owns/runs Opikkoffie alongside with her waiters; Diederik, Kabelo, and Annelie. Oppikoffie is a coffee shop/daily restaurant which is in the Hillside Heights building and directly opposite the boutique. Oppikoffie is where all the characters like to meet up and gossip.

  • Electic E (Boutique)

Electric E is the expensive boutique which is opposite Oppikoffie. It is run by Felicity (who is also a fashion designer) along with the shop assistants; Emma and Clara. Alot of the female characters come in the boutique and stare at the wonderful clothing they so badly want.

  • Hillside Deli

The Deli is owned and run by Vince Meintjies (one of the sons of Neville Meintjies). The two other workers at the deli are Hilda and Vanessa.

  • Studio Sewe (7)

Studio Sewe is the art galley in Hillside. It is owned by Vanessa and Xander Meintjies with the assistance of Isabelle Moolman. The gallery has had many wonderful exhibitions which has made it a very popular art gallery.

  • Bookshop

The bookshop is owned by Ryno Lategan with the assistance of Matrone Netta Nortje. The bookshop has made many book releases with the author being there as a guest to give autographs or to answer questions that characters might have on the release day of the book.

  • Hillside Travel

Hillside Travel is a travel agency owned by Gita McGregor with Zinzi Kheswa as one of the workers.

  • Hillside Times

Hillside Times is the local newspaper owned by Neville Meintjies and Tim Jordaan. Hillside Times has Mandla Khumalo as their journalist, Paula Van Der Lecq as their freelance journalist and Aggie Ngwena as their PA. Errol Pieterse (adopted son of Charmaine Beukes and Neville Meintjies) works alonside with Mandla with some of his articles and interviews when he is not at school. Errol has recently done a couple of freelance articles for the newspaper.

  • Bruynwaves

Bruynwaves is an events company which is owned by Altus De Bruyn.

  • Terron and Terreblanche(T & T)

T & T is a sports shop which sells alot of sports equipment and also has a mini gym. The shop is owned by Herman Croukamp. The shop has two workers; Lukas and San-Mari. San-Mari runs the gym and conducts the classes.

  • O'Malley's

O'Malley's is the pub where the young crowd likes to hang around. Lukas also works there in a night shift.

  • Hillside Club

Hillside Club is managed by Alyce Morapedi and is where the whole cast gets together to watch a band play.

Less used or Mentioned businesses/shops

  • JJ's

JJ's is a grocery shop where some of the characters do their gorcery shopping.

  • Nogtnagel and Partners

Nogtnagel and partners is the law firm where Xander Meintjies works as a lawyer.

Anniversery

In April 2010, Sewende Laan celebrated ten years on television. During this month, viewers got to see pictures of the show through its ten years during the end credits of each episode.
