Peepli Live is an upcoming Hindi film which is produced by Aamir Khan. Written and directed by Anusha Rizvi in her first directorial venture, the film stars Naya Theatre company member Omkar Das Manikpuri as well as Raghubir Yadav, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Malaika Shenoy along with a number of newcomers. Peepli Live, distributed by UTV Motion Pictures, is scheduled for release on 13 August 2010.[1]

A satire on the farmers' suicides and subsequent media and political response,[2] Peepli Live competed in the Sundance Film Festival, the first film from India to achieve this feat.[3] However for the Indian release the film got an 'A' adult certificate.[4] The movie was picked up by specialty German distribution company Rapid Eye Movies for a special screening at the Berlin International Film Festival.[5]

Cast

Production

Peepli Live began as a script written by NDTV journalist Anusha Rizvi called The Fallen. In 2004 Rizvi asked Khan to read her script and, although he initially refused as he was preoccupied with shooting Mangal Pandey: The Rising, he eventually relented and decided to finance the film after she described the plot to him.[6]

Peepli Live was filmed on location in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and New Delhi. According to Khan, many of the actors are Adivasis from the village of Bhadwai in Madhya Pradesh.[7] Other cast members are from playwright Habib Tanvir's theatre troupe Naya Theatre.[8]
