"Hang with Me" is a synthpop song by Swedish recording artist Robyn. It was released as lead single from her sixth studio album, Body Talk Pt. 2, on 16 August 2010 in Scandinavia.

Background

An acoustic version of the song was previously released on the preceding album, Body Talk Pt. 1.[1] Written by Klas Åhlund, it was originally recorded by Åhlund's ex-wife, Paola, on her 2002 album Stockcity Girl. Robyn said about the song: "Pop should be seductive and sweet when it can. And I felt like I could be on Hang with Me, in a uncompromising way. It's like a sweet and sour bon-bon wrapped in melancholy. Yum."[2]

Critical reception

Erika Berlin of Rolling Stone gave the song a positive review stating: "the first single from the set's second LP proves she's [sic] can crank out catchy jams as fast as pop's biggest hitmakers. "Hang With Me" is revamped version of an acoustic track from Body Talk Pt. 1, made even better with the addition of a fierce, club-wrecking beat."[3] Robert Ballantyne from music website Popjournalism called the song Robyn's best single yet. He wrote: "Producer and long-time Robyn collaborator Klas Åhlund adds just the right amount of au courant electro-pop into the mix, but not too much to doom the track to the dance-club ghetto.[4] A reviewer from Pitchfork Media wrote: "As Robyn's vocals are echoed by a robotic self-harmony, she seems to be encouraging herself twice as hard to believe the song's words, and the relentlessly energetic bass pulses and synth arpeggios help to lighten the narrator's hesitance [...] it's Robyn's ability to synthesize such disparate moods and feelings in a single track that gets to the heart of what we love most about her: it would take lesser pop artists an entire album to explore the wide spectrum of emotions that she can express in less than four minutes."[5] In an album review Stereogum wrote: "“Hang With Me,” doesn’t quite reach the levels of rapturous heartache of “Dancing On My Own,” but it’s close. And, as predicted, the quick arpeggio of the acoustic version turns into fizzing keyboard here.[6]

The music video was directed by Max Vitali and was released on Robyn's official Vimeo account on 26 July 2010.[2][7] The video shows brief clips of Robyn's everyday life on tour with her bandmates in their tour bus, her dressing room, the motorway, live performances, signing albums and CD's, and in the studio.
