Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Numist (talk | contribs) at 17:34, 4 October 2010. The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including Stewards) familiar with local usurpation guidelines, can consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames primarily held locally. This consists of renaming an existing account in order to vacate the username and allow another user to take it.

Please note that global accounts whose "home wiki" is another project or which have significant attachments on other projects cannot be usurped here; these requests must be made at meta:Steward requests/Username changes (see meta:Help:Unified login).

A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

  • The account you want to usurp must have the English Wikipedia as its "home wiki", i.e. or should be displayed next to the en.wikipedia.org entry for the account at Special:CentralAuth.
  • The account you want to usurp should have no edits or significant log entries to qualify for usurpation (though rare exceptions are made in some circumstances). This includes edits or log actions on other Wikimedia projects. These can be checked through Special:CentralAuth.
  • Please do not request usurpation of another account if your own user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.

Instructions

  1. Log in to your present account.
    • Please do not leave a talk page message or e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a user familiar with the usurpation process will do so.
  2. Click here to place your request.
    1. Replace "TARGET NAME" with the username you wish to usurp.
    2. Replace "YOUR REASON" with a description of why you want to usurp the account.
    3. Leave the "Subject/headline" field blank.
If the URL above does not work, simply copy the following text, click "edit this page" and paste it at the bottom of the page. Modify it as indicated.
{{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON}}
Advanced usage
For requests involving renaming an account other than your logged in account, use this:
{{subst:usurp|CURRENT NAME|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON}}
For usurp only requests, which leaves your logged in account untouched, set the usurponly parameter to yes:
{{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|usurponly=yes|reason=YOUR REASON}}
To add an optional non default signature, use the sig parameter:
{{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON|sig=OPTIONAL SIGNATURE}}
  1. Preview the changes and make sure both names are spelled correctly. Click "Publish changes".
  2. Your request is now complete and ready to be processed after the hold period (usually about a week). If the owner of the target account does not object, a global renamer will fulfill your request provided other requirements are met. Do not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Please place your request in the section for the current day, at the bottom of the list. It is currently 12:22:04, 9 September 2024 (UTC) (Update).

Kaacper → Kashmiri

Status:     On hold until 5 October 2010

kashmiri (talk) 01:05, 14 September 2010 (UTC) kashmiri (talk) 01:05, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Note:
  • The target username has made edits to Wikipedia. Due to licensing concerns, this may be a barrier to usurpation.
  • User has 3 undeleted edits, 0 deleted edits, and 3 total edits. Requesting user has 330 edits. ClueBot VI (talk) 01:08, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As a note, I noticed the three edits were the creation of a new article, that we still have. The three edits are enough to be GFDL significant, as well. Courcelles 17:29, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
 Clerk note: Actually, it's not necessarily the creation of a new article, since the edit is not flagged with a capital "N" as is done for page creations. It's possible that there have been previous edits that have been lost many years ago. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 188° 57' 30" NET 12:35, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I would hazard a guess that such flags didn't exist in 2005. –xenotalk 15:40, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. It's safe to assume the target account created that article. WJBscribe (talk) 10:27, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think the editors' contributions are indeed cc-by-sa/GFDL-significant as the edits represent the genesis of the Kashmiri Gate (Delhi) article and the information originally provided persists in the article to this day. If the user happens to consent, this can proceed - you might consider sending them an email. However, I will leave this for another bureaucrat to provide a second opinion and wouldn't object if it were fulfilled. –xenotalk 15:36, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I emailed the user today and am awaiting his/her response, although it would be helpful if a bureaucrat could check out whether the user's email address is correct (= the message did not bounce). BTW, I wonder what the policy is when a user cannot be contacted due to invalid email address on file? kashmiri (talk) 05:42, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
 Clerk note: Flagged request as on hold. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 238° 34' 15" NET 15:54, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
 Bureaucrat note: Second opinion. This is a pretty borderline call. I am reasonably satisfied that renaming a user from "Foo" to "Foo (renamed)" is unlikely to violate the GFDL (I think the belief otherwise is an overly literal reading of the GFDL obligation to preserve the history of an article). On this basis, I would likely perform this request were it to unify an existing SUL. However, in this case we are looking at a request for a new SUL, when you could request a new name that doesn't give rise to these issues, which would usually make me lean towards declining the request. In this instance however, the name has so few edits across projects that I think that would just be putting off the issue (it's a name bound to be used by an active user on some project or another some day).
So, I think this request should go ahead. But the current owner of the name should be given a full week to reply to the email he has been sent. WJBscribe (talk) 10:26, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is no talk page, and anonymous cannot create.

So you are saying you originally registered this username sometime ago? If so, you'll need to create a temporary account to receive the name. –xenotalk 12:28, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Schvenn-Meister → Schvenn

Status:     In progress

Schvenn-Meister (talk) 00:47, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi team. I've been trying for months to log back into my old account, unsuccessfully. I was talking with one of the helpers in the chatroom who advised me to take this route. As you can see, the name Schvenn has been around since 2006 on here, but not used more than once. That's because I forgot the password and didn't attach an e-mail to it back then.

I'm very attached to the username, because I actually invented it. Only within the last year, or maybe two have other people started using this name, but very few. They've clearly found my sites at some point and thought it was a unique enough identifier to try to use, as well. Schvenn is actually a derivation of the name Sven, with a German twist. It's about protecting your online identity, as I'm sure you can understand. I'm a frequent reader of Wiki, but haven't been able to contribute because of my lapse of memory regarding this account. Your consideration is appreciated.

Note:
  • The target username has made edits to Wikipedia that are now deleted. Usernames with only deleted edits can usually be usurped.
  • The current owner of the target username does not have an email address specified.
  • User has 0 undeleted edits, 1 deleted edits, and 1 total edits. Requesting user has 1 edits. ClueBot VI (talk) 00:50, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Note I spoke to this user over IRC, in the help channel; they explained their plight. As there was no email registered, we could not request a password reset. Therefore, I suggested this procedure - creating a new account, and usurping - based on the fact the SUL is clear, and it's one edit, from 2006. Despite the low edit count / policy re. 'established users', this seems a very genuine and honest case, where the user has used the name elsewhere and would like it for consistency. Hence suggesting usurp, anticipating your benevolence and flexibility :-) Hope this is all good, thanks,  Chzz  ►  01:01, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I'm not. However, the Wikibooks user has made only 8 edits and has not used the account since 2005. It seems reasonable to me to conclude that the Wikibooks account is also inactive and will never lay claim to the SUL with the Wikipedia account.
