Cyberport (Chinese: 數碼港) is a HK$15.8 billion (US$2 billion) landmark project[1] managed by Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited and wholly owned by the Hong Kong SAR Government.[2]
Focusing on enterprise and professional development, Cyberport helps commercialise creative ideas and incubate start-ups. The Cyberport Digital Entertainment Incubation-cum-Training (IncuTrain) is the only incubation facility focusing on digital contents in Hong Kong. To help develop human capital and market, the Cyberport IncuTrain Centre collaborates with various organizations and platforms internationally to provide entrepreneurs with technology, training opportunities, business matching and networks support.
Cyberport is Hong Kong’s unique Creative Digital Community, with a considerable scale and size of tenant mix. Cyberport is home to an energetic community of ICT and creative digital content tenants who enjoy synergies from co-locating with each other. Interconnected by a state-of-the-art broadband network, the Cyberport community is home to four grade-A intelligent office buildings, a five-star design hotel, a retail entertainment complex and about 2,800 deluxe residences.
Cyberport is a hybrid of public ownership and commercial operation. Cyberport has the public missions to create a strategic cluster of quality ICT and ICT related companies so as to spearhead the development of the digital media & lifestyle and related industry in Hong Kong.
Background of the project
In 1999, the Hong Kong government announced the intention to develop the Cyberport which would help local businesses capitalize on the rapid growth of the Internet. Cyberport was intended as a place where the development of information technology and multimedia would be nurtured so that the demands of these industries could be met in the future. It was also hoped that this development would help the HKSAR's economy rebound after the Asian financial crisis of 1997.
Three private and wholly-owned companies, namely, Hong Kong Cyberport Development Holdings Limited, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited and Hong Kong Cyberport (Ancillary Development) Limited (collectively referred to as the “Cyberport Companies”) have been set up under the Financial Secretary Incorporated (FSI) to oversee the implementation of the project.
The Cyberport also houses one of the incubation facility for technology startups called IncuTrain Centers providing office space, financial aid package, training and network access to the investment community. Incubatees have varied degrees of success.
Location
Conveniently located on a 24-hectare site at Telegraph Bay in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island, Cyberport is easily accessible to the city's financial and business districts.
Construction
The construction of the Cyberport portion which consists of four office buildings, The Arcade and Le Meridien Cyberport Hotel was completed in phases between 2002 and 2004 to provide altogether about 100,000 square metres of grade-A office space to accommodate 100-plus IT and related companies.
The construction of the residential portion which consists of approximate 2,800 units or houses was completed in phases between 2004 and 2008.
Management
Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Ltd (HKCMCL) is responsible for the development, operation and management of the Cyberport project.
