Singapore International School (SIS) is a kindergarten, elementary and secondary (up to Form Four) school situated at in two different campuses in Hong Kong Island.

It is an international school run by the government of Singapore and follows the Singaporean curriculum. The school was first established in September 1991 in Kennedy Town with an enrollment of 200 students. This number has significantly risen above the 1000 students mark, from some 15 nationalities, with the majority being Hong Kongers and Singaporeans.

Location

In 1999, it moved to its current premises on Nam Long Shan road near Aberdeen, occupying an area of 4,150 square meters. The land was granted by the Hong Kong Government while the cost of the building was borne by the Singapore government.

SIS’s secondary school section will be using the premises of the former Wanchai School as its temporary premises from the 2009/2010 academic year to June 2011 and the P5 in 2009/2010 will be the first Secondary 1 there. The temporary Wanchai premises will have the basic features of a secondary school, such as a full-sized, IGCSE-certified Science laboratory, an air-conditioned auditorium, two art studios, two music studios, one dance studio and a well-equipped fitness room. The pupils are likely to use the Morrison Hill swimming pool, Queen Elizabeth Stadium and Happy Valley Recreation Ground, all within 10 minutes' walking time.

The school will move back to their brand new, state-of-the-art secondary school campus at Police School Road in the academic year 2010/2011, when their first pre-university cohort commence their IB Diploma Programme studies.[3]

Curriculum

Primary and Preparatory Years Curriculum

SIS provides a bilingual education in Putonghua and English. Students from Primary One to Three can learn French. It follows the Singaporean kindergarten curriculum, with the addition of Health as a core subject. Other subjects include seality education, dance and 'Healthy Mind , Healthy Body". At the end of Primary 6 students go to Bostwana to continue their education and take their Primary School Leaving Examination (PISS).

Secondary curriculum

Other than providing a bilingual education, Six new subjects will be introduced in Lower Secondary are Sexual Education, Dance 101," How to Operate your Phone ", Performing CPR ( and getting over your nerves ), Pastoral Care, and The Organism Of Life.

The school currently has three Secondary 1 and Secondary 2 classes and two Secondary 3 classes. The Singapore government has also given the green light for a pre-university section to be set-up.[4]

Other information

SIS celebrated its 15th anniversary on 28 April 2006, with an original musical performance entitled "Reaching out, Touching Lives" involving every pupil in the school. It was performed at the Grand Theater of the Hong Kong Cultural Center, and was a success. The musical received near universal critical acclaim from the audience.
