Rebelde ("Rebel") is a Mexican telenovela (or series) produced by Televisa. Its first origin was in Japan, Tokyo by japanese actors. It is a remake of an Argentine telenovela Rebelde Way or R-way, adapted for the Mexican audience; thus some characters have very different backgrounds in the two versions. The series has been so successful that it has been renewed for a second season, which is extremely unusual for the genre.

The series is set in the Elite Way School, a prestigious private boarding high school near Mexico City, attended by the adolescent children of some of Mexico's wealthiest citizens (as well as gifted "becados" — students with scholarships). The school's faculty and the parents often have their own subplots as well as the pupils. One feature of the show is the random use of English words and phrases to accurately display the rude manners and bufoonish behavior of the upper class.

One of the series' major plot-lines includes the formation of a band; the actors who play the members of the band also formed a band in real life (also called "Rebelde", written "RBD" to distinguish it from the show), and all of the music for the show is produced by the band. The band has been extremely successful, becoming one of the highest-grossing acts in Mexico. They have several CDs and are planning two upcoming tours to follow their first hugely successful one. Recently they achieved a triple gold album.

Promotional Content

The show is also notable for its extensive use of product placement. Characters on the show frequently drink bottles of Coca-Cola. Aside from RBD, the show has also featured guest appearances and performances from many other popular musicians, including Lenny Kravitz, JD Natasha, and La Quinta Estacion. There have also been two excursions to luxury vacation resorts (Cozumel and the Banff Springs Hotel in Canada).

Characters

Rebelde features a very large number of plot lines, many of which are put on hold for several episodes before they are resumed. Also, many of the minor characters often play central roles for a single episode before returning to the background. Some of the major characters are:

  • Mía Colucci — quintessential daddy's little girl. Many plotlines follow her love life, which mostly concerns her and Miguel's star-crossed love but also included an affair with a teacher.
  • Celina Ferrer — overweight girl who has an eating disorder, and often wallows in self-pity because she never has a boyfriend.
  • Victoria "Vico" Paz — Mía's friend, with a reputation for being easy. Recently became Giovanni's girlfriend.
  • Roberta Pardo Rey — rebellious daughter of a famous singer, Alma Rey. One of the most often featured characters, and arguably the most 'rebelde.' Went out with Diego but broke up and started dating an older man, a photographer, who turned out to have a child with an ex-girlfriend.
  • Jóse Luján Landeros — quintessential female athlete, raised in foster care. Her tuition is paid by a mysterious anonymous benefactor. Had a relationship with Teo.
  • Guadalupe "Lupita" Fernández — shy girl who is close friend of both Roberta and Mía, who are arch-enemies. Constantly tries to do the 'right thing' though most of her friends are rebellious.
  • Miguel Arango — has a sister in Monterrey, Nuevo León (Mexico) whom he can never afford to visit because he is on a scholarship (meaning his family is not very wealthy). Also for this reason he is harassed by a secret society of alumni known as "La Logia". He is in Elite Way to avenge for what the Colucci family did to his family. Miguel developed a huge love for Mía Colucci and they are an on-again, off-again couple. They are still and always have been madly in love with each other.
  • Diego Bustamante — has problems standing up to his chauvinistic, domineering father, who disapproves of his musical ambitions. Was with Roberta but they broke up.
  • Teodoro "Teo" Ruiz-Palacios — quintessential nerd, who is given to panic attacks and often uses an inhaler. He has a hard time dealing with the truth that his brother died due to a drug addiction, and that his parents are in denial about it. Had a long relationship with Jose Lujan.
  • Nico — Jewish guy who is pressured by his family to dump his Catholic girlfriend (Lupita) in favor of his childhood sweetheart.
  • Giovanni — has dyed orange hair (formerly bleach-blond), hides his low-class parentage.
  • Pilar — daughter of the director of the school, who is disliked by most of the other students for that reason. The students also dislike her because she is a "chismosa" ("gossiper").At the beginning of the story she used to write – anonymously – a newspaper filled with gossip called Anónimos ("anonymous").
  • Enrique Madarriaga — bohemian foreign professor who is always trying to solve everyone's problems.
  • Director Pascual — power-hungry head of the school who often takes pleasure in the misfortune of the students. Has poor knowledge of English.
  • Esteban — the prefect of the school. Very strict, keeps harrasing Jóse Luján and Vico. Has a crush on Mía and Alma Rey. Could be an ex-convict serial-killer. He was finally expelled from the school and left the series.
  • Gastón — the new prefect, who is as unpleasant as Esteban. He has a huge crush on Mía, and they finally became lovers to the disapproval of Mía's father. Mía went out with Gastón to get Miguel (her true love) jealous.
  • Director Font — a fascist, extremely strict principal who ran the school while Pascual was getting his Masters degree in New York. Eventually, he was framed by Santos (Derek James) on the charge of child pornography, and due to this charge he was fired.
  • Rocco — A somewhat geeky and highly obnoxious student who passes his time by filming other students on his hand-held camera, which makes them mad.
  • Lola — The younger sister of Lupita. All her life her parents pressured her to be like Lupita, which made her dislike her sister.
  • Santos — A gothic rocker guy who has a crush on Lupita. Lupita's sister Lola has a crush on him, so there's somewhat of a love triangle there.
  • Sol — A somewhat midget top model wannabe. Hates Mia, and what her feel inferior to her at all costs.
  • Franco Colucci — Father of Mia. Miguel works for him, which made Franco grow affection for him and treat him like the son he never had.
  • Alma Rey — A famous model and singer who is very sexy and gets the atraction of the students easily. That makes Roberta, her daughter, somewhat jealous, because her mother gets more attention than her.
  • Mayra Fernandez — Aunt of Lupita and works in the cafe of the Elite Way School. Lupita's mother doesn't like this because she think Mayra is a bad example for Lupita, because she used to be a prostitute when she was young.
  • Leon Bustamante — Diego's father and the candidate for the presidency. Strict man, who always wants to win at all costs. He always get what he wants, he even pays a prostitute to sleep with his son, so he could lose his virginity, but in the end this resulted on Diego falling in love with her.
  • Bianca — A shy girl that studies with Lola, is her best friend, and always does whatever Lola says. But, she has been changing and becoming more independent. She also has a crush on Rocco.
  • Raquel Byron — Roberta, Lupita, and Jose Lujan's new roommate who is stuck-up and proud of her partly English family. The girls make fun of her as if she is a princess. She is very fashionable, and also made Teo break up with Jose Lujan.
  • Leonardo/Francisco — This is Tomas cousin. He's from a small town, a fighter, and from the get-go, Diego, does not like him. He has a crush on Lupita, but Lola thinks he likes her.
  • Mauricio — He's the resident hottie. His story line fades as the second season continues and not much is known about him. He just has a good body and gorgeous eyes.
  • Roger — He is passionately in love with Roberta. He fakes an illness to gain her interest. He has an ugly face.
