Portfolio literally means "a case for carrying loose papers," (from Latin, the imperative of portare "to carry" and the plural of folium, meaning a 'a sheet for writing upon').
From about 1930 it has also come to mean a "collection of securities or responsibilities held by an individual"[citation needed] and so may refer to:
- A type of briefcase
- Portfolio (government), the post and responsibilities of a head of a government department
