MSM7000

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 86.180.31.159 (talk) at 13:49, 8 April 2011 (I refined the the opening description, previously it read like a slightly tangental conversation.). MSM7000 is a series system-on-a-chip manufactured by Qualcomm for handheld devices, especially smartphoness.

These SOCs have multiple processing cores but unlike the contemporary processor chips (e.g AMDs' Athlon/Phenom and Intels' Core series) these multiple cores are not available in the OS to run applications with symmetric multiprocessing properties, there is only one core to run the OS and user applications.

Generally these SOCs have the following 4 cores:

  • Applications processor, ARM1136EJ-S, running Windows / Linux / etc.
  • Applications DSP, QDSP5000, does coding/decoding for media.
  • Baseband processor, ARM9, running a real-time OS and the GSM stack
  • Baseband DSP, QDSP4000, does coding/decoding for telephony

Aside the CPU cores the chips contain such hardware as 2D graphics hardware, 3D (OpenGL ES 1.1) graphics hardware, media acceleration hardware (for video decode etc.), and various interfaces (keyboard, display / MDDI, USB, camera, TV, ...). They also contain an AXI controller, a kind of memory control unit.

They are widely used in smartphones produced by HTC Corporation (including both Windows Mobile and Android devices), Sony Ericsson, LG Group, Samsung, and also other devices like the Zeebo.

MSM7200, MSM7201, MSM7200A, MSM7201A

See the Qualcomm page.

The A versions have higher specs (frequencies). The 7201 versions have a different radio than the 7200 versions.

Popular phones using these processors:

MSM7525

Basically the same as the MSM7200A, but with CDMA.

Popular phones using these processor;

MSM7525 528MHz 65nm[4]; HTC Hero CDMA

MSM7227 and MSM7230

These devices are GSM cousins of the Snapdragon chips, for example they include OpenGL ES 2.0 engine and Adreno 200 included.

Popular phones using these processors:

MSM7627 and MSM7630

These devices are CDMA2000 cousins of the Snapdragon chips, for example they include OpenGL ES 2.0 engine and Adreno 200.
