Baruch College Campus High School (BCCHS) is a public high school located on the Flatiron District of borough Manhattan in New York City. Baruch College Campus High School had the highest number of applicants among the New York public high schools in 2011.[1] [2] The school is renowned for its high academic standards, unique advisory program and high graduation and college acceptance rates at 100%.[3]
History
Baruch College Campus High School was a vision between Anthony Alvarado, the former superintendent of Community School District 2, and Matthew Goldstein, the President of Baruch College. The idea was to create a small, liberal arts high school that had college prep as its focus, on a college campus. Established in 1997, Jill Myers was its inspirational leader as principal for the first 6 years [4] in the original school location on 18th Street. Baruch moved to 17 Lexington Avenue's upper floors for a number of years but because of the expansion of the college, in 2009 the school had moved to a new location located on 55 East 25th Street on Park Avenue near Baruch College of The City University of New York.
Enrollment
The school has a total enrollment of over 400 students. This year,(2011) Baruch College Campus receives 7,770 applications, which has the most applicators in the city (Not including Specialized High Schools).[5] Admission is based on a screening process whereby the school evaluates and ranks all applicants based on their previous school year's final academic record, standardized test scores, attendance and punctuality. The school is made up of 61% Asian, 22% White, 11% Hispanic, and 6% blacks.
Admission
Student must have a minimum of 85 or above average on every major subject (i.e. english, math, science, history), as well as a 2-4 on both New York State ELA and Math exams to be considered as an applicant. Due to the large number of applications the school receives every year, (around 7,700 for 105 freshman seats in 2011, a 61% rise since 2010[3]) Baruch only considers the students with a high 90 average, as well as a 3 or 4 on both ELA and Math. Priority is given to District 2 students, then to Manhattan residents, then to New York City. Admission is open for 9th great seats only, students may only enter the school in their freshman year.
Facilities
Students can use a few of the facilities of Baruch College, such as the Newman Library, providing a more enriching education and preparing them to become college bound leaders.
Academics
The required courses are all honors-level courses. Baruch has a elevated pass grade of a 70.
