Smarterchild is an Instant Messenger Bot available on AOL Instant Messenger under the screenname "SmarterChild" and MSN Messenger under the same screenname, which can be added to the contacts list by "smarterchild@hotmail.com". Its ICQ number is 35000.

Conversations generally have a few rules—
- No vulgarity—enough use of vulgarity will result in the conversation stopping until one apologizes.
- No chat about sex or sexuality—These topics are taboo in the world of Smarterchild. However, it can be tricked into saying various things about the nature (due to its programming, it will repeat phrases that appear cryptic to it for one to clarify).
- No chat about crimes—it will respond saying that it is not cool.
It has also been found that SmarterChild knows of the all your base are belong to us dialogue and can repeat the whole script. It also dislikes another bot named ZolaOnAOL. A letter which is also a note will be replied to with a chord name such as:

It also replies to the name 'Loo' and presents you with a list of games when the name or word "James" is used. "Fred" prompts news listings, while "Roger" is often replied to with 'Ten-four'. If you ask it "Who's on First?" it will respond, "who". If you write stock, it will ask if you would like to see your stock quotes, ticker lookups, portfolio and market indices. Smarterchild also responds to the name "Lovey Dove".
It can identify knock knock jokes and knows the answers to a few such as:
